The local Holy Cross Alumni Club is hosting a pre-game reception in the Atrium of the arena. All are welcome.

The Saints are 3-8 and are 2-3 at home. They started the season with 4 losses (Bucknell, College of Charleston, Florida Gulf Coast and Lehigh), they then beat Hofstra, lost to St Bonaventure's, beat Robert Morris, lost to Louisville and Albany, and Vermont. In their last game, they beat Bryant for their third win. They play at Memphis tonight.
Thanks bison. I corrected the list.

The Saints are 3-8 and are 2-3 at home. They started the season with 4 losses (LeMoyne, College of Charleston, Florida Gulf Coast and Lehigh), Actually LeMoyne was only an exhibition game. Siena did lose four in a row to start the season, but the fourth was to Bucknell 115-92. Could have been a much wider margin, as BU led by 32 points with about 9 minutes left when they pulled all the starters. Siena may have been the worst defensive team I've ever seen Bucknell play.

Siena may have been the worst defensive team I've ever seen Bucknell play. The numbers do suggest a poor defensive unit. Siena ranks 342nd in opponent effective possession ratio, which gauges defensive rebounding (260th) and ability to create turnovers (343rd), as well as effectively defending shots (211th). Un-adjusted defensive efficiency, 307th.

Massey makes Siena (#234) an 8 point favorite over Holy Cross (#293) (73-65) with a 78% chance for the win.

Wow, embarrassing is it not? +8 to a #234 team and a MAAC team to boot? Any ready made excuses if we lose to Siena. Bus trip to an away game. Tired after grueling exams not experienced by Siena players. Two players who rarely score had "career nights? Frosh had career high 12 points, things are looking up!

Bison can help me with this, but I'm pretty sure one of those top 75 Bison teams of 05-06 lost to Central Arkansas, a member of the 300 RPI club. Good thing for them they didn't go out and slit their wrists after that one.

Good thing for them they didn't go out and slit their wrists after that one. The 2006-07 team lost to Central Arkansas in the first game of the Marist tournament right after Christmas. Had they won that game, and then beat Marist in the championship game the next day (instead of beating Northern Illinois in the consolation game), they would have ended up playing the championship game in Sojka, instead of the Hart. At that point, they had won 35 consecutive PL games in Sojka. Central Arkansas wasn't 300+ but they weren't far from it.

Those heavyweight battles between HC and Bucknell feel like they were 100 years ago.

SoV, my only point is anyone can lose to anyone - in general, I think too much emphasis is placed on rankings and ratings, particularly early in the season. A RPI number has never worn a pair of basketball shoes.

I believe the rankings are pretty accurate. For example PL at 24 sounds about right.

As general reference, sure...but they never explain how Chaminade beats Virginia, or Williams beats HC. On any given night, numbers are just numbers. Humans play; not Dell or HP.

Siena looking good in a 70-66 loss to Memphis. "Freshman guard Jordan Horn exploded for a season-high 24 points on eight three-pointers off the bench for the Saints, which led for nearly 24 minutes and by as many as 10 points in falling just short in their bid to pull off a high-major upset." Makes HC's next game look like it will be a tough one...perhaps even tougher than originally expected. Another strong 3 point shooter, just what we need at this point. The Saints are now 3-9...BUT don't let that record fool you. This is a tough club.

Horn was 3/18 on threes prior to that breakout game when he shot 8/12.

Forgot to mention the 2005-06 team had five total losses; At Duke (#1 in nation), Villanova (#4 in nation), Memphis (#3 in nation) - NCAA tournament, at Northern Iowa ( ranked around #25) - Double OT, and at Santa Clara. Won at Syracuse (who won Big East that year), at DePaul, and Arkansas (NCAA), among others. No "bad" losses that year.

Siena is #72 in 3 PT PCTG at .385. Holy Cross's three wins came in the three games where we held opponents under 30% in three point shooting: (1) SHU went 4/20 and SHU ranks #347 in D-1 in 3 pt pctg for the season; (2) Harvard went 8/29 and Harvard ranks #336; (3) UNH went 9/33, an anomaly (or good defense by HC?) as the Wildcats rank #145 in the country. Those three games were also HC's best in regard to overall "defensive efficiency". There's less of a correlation in Offensive Efficiency as our three wins came in the games where we had our 3rd, 6th, and 7th best offensive efficiency games.
