High academic standards . . . . Catholic identity . . . .? Our academic standards are about the same (lower?) than other PL schools. Issue with Admissions and lack of "flexibility" might be still a concern. I saw "Lady Bird" and interesting concept but my gut tells me that if you went to a Catholic High School, you probably won't mind going to Holy Cross. The fact that I hear that Holy Cross is both too liberal and too conservative tells me that there is something for everyone. In fact, aren't a number of Catholic High School kids non-Catholic and some of them come to Holy Cross. As for bringing in a 6 person freshmen class, pretty sure Carmody like most coaches wants to win now and will worry about down the road issues "down the road."
Only indirectly related to HC basketball is that I will be VERY interested to see how Bob Chesney recruits for football. Will he be tapping Catholic H.S.s?
Here's my prediction about the future of HC basketball coaching. It is based on absolutely no inside knowledge, just a gut feeling. If you recall, there was some (justified) criticism that Ralph did not have a "succession plan" but I suspect that Joe Scott with his head coaching experience and disciple of the Princeton Offense was brought in with assurances that Coach Carmody would leave no later than at the end of his 5 year contract, maybe sooner if he decided to retire earlier, and Scott inherits the job to ensure consistency and a smooth transition in order to avoid the disastrous transitions we had from RW to SK to MB to WC.

I fear that and it would be a disaster to hire Scott as a successor.

Next year will not be better, players are slow, who will rebound and who will be our 3 point scorers?

Next year will not be better, players are slow, who will rebound and who will be our 3 point scorers? You don’t foresee the current players improving next season?? Most players, especially freshmen, improve from one season to the next, especially in three point shooting

This makes the hefty assumption that, like Carmody, there was demand for Scott elsewhere, which was more than likely not the case for Scott, just like it wasn’t the case for Carmody, who was in quasi-assistant role at Fairfield. Also, the criticism of RW not having a successor was totally UNjustified. It is not the job of a head coach at a low-to-mid-major school to keep a successor on his staff, especially when assistants can make far more money elsewhere. Even with that being the case, RW did end up with a successor on his staff in Mark Daigneault, and as has been discussed before, RW would have taken the job after Kearney was fired with a handoff in place for Daigneault, but Fr McFarland decided to let a personal grudge get in the way, leading us farther along the path to the total train wreck where we are today. Happy New Year!! Go Cross!!

Okay, so which is it: (1) you have access to the coaching staff and are briefed on the team's preparation and given a copy of the game plans, OR (2) you are so knowledgeable about college basketball that you just know what the story is??? Which is it?? “The team felt a difference on the court, too. “The practices were quicker, more streamlined,” says Pat Baldwin, a former Northwestern player whom Collins brought on as an assistant. And the emphasis, at least initially, was on defense, slowing the game down. “For the first couple of workouts, we didn’t even touch a basketball, which was definitely a change to everyone there,” Lumpkin recalls. “He wanted us to know we were going to be a hard-nosed, blue-collar team. We’re going to stop guys, and the defense was going to win games.” One former player, Kale Abrahamson, remembers finishing what seemed like a routine scrimmage—only to receive a group text from a teammate later. “Guys, get here early,” it read, according to an account on the website Inside NU. “Film room. I’ve never seen a coaching staff this mad in my whole entire life.” www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/November-2017/How-Chris-Collins-Made-a-Winner-of-Northwestern-Basketball/It’s painfully obvious watching the games that the staff places very little emphasis on the film room. Wow, did you cherry pick that article for the attenuated claim you wanted to make. I still did not see where you final assumption was proven by the article....maybe I missed it....where was the sentence/paragraph about Carmody not watching film or scouting teams. Perhaps I read it too quickly. Of note was the paragraph after your quoted section, where Collins said what he originally was doing was not working and had to reboot. Cheers.

I think someone in the past posted that 20 wins in the Malan brown era would someday look like the glory days. Have we arrived?

I think someone in the past posted that 20 wins in the Malan brown era would someday look like the glory days. Have we arrived? A coach must have brought his team to the dance to even be in the conversation, 70. You know that. If Milan was the glory days, you are still tipsy from too much bubbly last night. Cheers.
