I hope everyone is coping with this winter storm (if it is hitting your area). I imagine HC will travel this evening. The roads should be clear by then and the wind lessening. This powdered snow (at least in this area) is getting blown off the roads but visibility is limited (under 1/4 mile in some spots) so travel at this time is dangerous. Most North NJ roads are virtually empty, so I imagine folks have learned their lessons well. Stay safe (and warm)!

Lots of snow here in Central CT. Decent winds but nothing crazy yet. Went out this morning. Was okay at 7:00. Not so good by 9:00. Stay safe everyone!

Rob, not so sure things will be better tonight for a road trip out of Worcester. Recognizing that things are supposed to be worse around the coast, here in RI, we have a red alert warning and last I heard was through 1:00 am tomorrow. I hope that the school/coaches/team err on the side of caution.

The storm seems indeed to be hugging the coast. The worst of it is supposed to be done in North Jersey by around noon.

10 miles southeast of Worcester....
Wind gusts to 41 mph out of the N & NE. Temp steady at 27 degrees. Tough to tell how much snow because the wind is blowing it all over the place. Thankfully it is the light, fluffy, powdery stuff. Boston is a mess as is the East coast of MASS. Flooding in the area of the Aquarium, Atlantic Ave and numerous other areas. Comments from TV indicate this could be as bad or worse than the blizzard of '78 (but not in terms of amount of snow).
I'll echo your thoughts 'hoops... I hope nobody loses their power! I called my propane supplier (in CT) on Tuesday and they said they would be here on Thursday. I did not expect them to come out today but, sure enough they filled the tank with 720 gallons this morning at 7:00am just as the snow was ramping up! Time to hunker down for a few days! Stay warm and safe everybody!

Hope your solar panels don't blow away! HA! HA! LOL! ! I just updated my previous post to show wind gusts now up to 41mph! Looking at them now, they are barely moving and they are at the steepest angle (winter position)! The racking system they are on can withstand winds up to 130 mph! How's the Ocean State doing? Looks like we have another 5 hours or so of snow to come. Stay warm and stay safe!

28 degrees on my front porch. About 6"-7" snow on my roof but winds are howling. No trees or branches or wires down (yet) so we still have power so nice and cozy here.

Wind gusts on my wind meter are topping pout at 46 mph! We lost cable TV and Internet from about 4:15 to 6:15pm. When I called to tell Charter/Spectrum about the outage, I was connected to a service rep in MN. He said that they did not have any snow flying but the temps were 37 below zero! ! I'm with you 'hoops, I can do without TV and cable as long as the electric does not go down! Seriously thinking about putting in a propane generator next summer! Snow now winding down here. Boston and the East coast of MASS are a mess with flooding not seen in decades! Stay warm and safe!

Heard your voicemail but I was out snowblowing my driveway. Didn't measure but likely 10"-12". Despite the wind which is abating. wanted to get it off before the temps dropped even further so if I have to do it again, a much smaller job. Sorry about your outage but at least you were warm.

I put in a whole house generator--attached to the gas line---last year. It provides great peace of mind/marriage continuation insurance. I think it was $10 or $11K

I think it was $10 or $11K Seriously considering doing the whole house generator next summer! Winds tonight are approaching the 50 mph range! Worcester reports 17" of the white stuff. We probably have somewhat lower amounts. Snow has completely stopped. Estimates for the generator that I have seen are in the $5k range for the generator. Installation is extra but probably less than $3k. Ky: Do you have power issues down there or just a precaution related to hurricanes?

Odd situation here... Driveway is about 150' long. Some parts are completely dry and devoid of snow while other parts have what appears to be about 1 - 2 feet because of the drifting. The broken rib is healing but I've been read the "riot" act and given the "red" light as far as using the snowblower! TV and Internet were only out for about 2 hours. Power is still on and hopefully stays on! With the jet steam changing next week, temps are expected to be in the 40's! BEAT LEHIGH!!

We had two major outages hit the city in the last 10-15 years, one was the other-worldly ice storm where we lost power for 5 or 6 days. The other was wind-related--many people lost power for multiple days but my house was spared. Since then we've had just minor outages. The issue here is that the Ville has lots of trees and power lines are above ground in some areas. The short answer is that it is mostly a precaution. I don't know that it will add value to the house when I sell it (hopefully many years off) but it should certainly be a tie breaker

Can't imagine that it would not. Surprised to hear that power lines are underground. That is almost non existent up here except for new developments. Three years ago I added solar (see my avitar). I have not paid an electric bill in 3 years and have a substantial credit built up to be used when I use more power (December and January) than I produce.

I hope the masses follow your solar example (becoming more economically-feasible with greater power generating technology) and i intend to do so at some point in the next few years. do you have a tesla power wall to store your energy?

I hope the masses follow your solar example (becoming more economically-feasible with greater power generating technology) and i intend to do so at some point in the next few years. do you have a tesla power wall to store your energy? No, I do not have any kind of "storage" system. When I first started researching this 4 years ago, I contacted 7 companies and then whittled it down to the best 3. One of the companies had previously done the type of install (ground mounted) that I wanted. I spent a few hours listening and questioning one of their clients who had done what I wanted. In addition, he had the type of battery backup that you speak of and used it to charge his electric car. After crunching the numbers, it seemed like a no-brainer. Initial outlay was expensive but in 3 years, with all the rebates, state and federal tax credits and SRECT credits, almost 2/3 of the cost has been recovered. The entire system, panels and inverter are warrantied for 25 years. In my case, with no backup storage, the excess power produced goes back into the grid (called NET metering where the meter goes backwards) building up monetary credit to be used in different ways. Last month and this month I'll use more electricity than I produce because of all the Christmas lights, etc., so the credits will pay for that. Before my mother passed in 2016 my credits were paying for her electric bill. Some people that I know use their credits to make a charitable donation to their church thus creating a charitable deduction on their tax returns. I missed the first round of incentives here in Massachusetts and got in on the second round which was less rewarding but still very doable. Now they are going to a third round and the incentives are considerably less. Now if I could only find a way to eliminate my cable and phone bills...

Really cold here in the Sturbridge area overnight..minus 8 degrees, it's warmed up to plus 4 now...I can't imagine how cold it is at the Luth complex with the wind blowing! We got about a foot of snow and a lot of blowing snow and drifts..Looks like it will "warm up" to the high 20's on Monday with a slight chance of a snow shower in the evening...It will be good to get out of the house Monday! I'm getting to old for all this winter stuff!
