Northwestern does not look at this time to be returning to the NCAA Tournament this season. The Widcats are currently 11-9 with an RPI of #127. Will need a big turn around to get back there.

Just listened to the first couple of minutes. Is this story much more interesting because they bash the previous two coaches NW had prior to the year they made the Dance? I think I'm missing something. A guy comes in and leads Northwestern to their best basketball era since the Depression, leads the team to more post season tournaments than the ten prior coaches combined, and has the school's first ever 20 win seasons. His successor comes in and takes the team to the next level and their first ever dance. I can see celebrating Collins. I can see acknowledging that it was time for a change from the old regime. I do not see a reason to bash the guy that took the school from laughing stock to a blip on the radar. |

They're also not exactly wrong -- Carmody wasn't able to get Northwestern over the hump. It seems like he's being painted as the villain, but we're just basing that off of a couple soundbites. We also don't know how he will be portrayed in the doc. They very well could be complimentary of him (multiple 20 win seasons and NIT appearances), but wasn't the guy to get it done. |

I don’t hate Bill Carmody, and I highly doubt any HC fan hates Bill Carmody. Those without their head in the sand (or elsewhere - see above post) hate where the basketball program is right now and his hands are dirty with his performance since he arrived. 2) Where Northwestern was before Carmody arrived is irrelevant to my comment about NW fans having to endure 13 years of him. He certainly did a nice job of getting them beyond where they had been in the past, but in no way whatsoever did he revolutionize that program. I’m sure it was enjoyable when he turned them from “below average” to “average” (or wherever they ended up) for the first few years, but when you get to years 7-8-9-10-11-12-13 and he’s still doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over again and it’s clearly not going to advance the program over the hump, that is exhausting for a fan base. (Also struggling to see a real difference in those stats? From awful to slightly less awful? 24-62 is still really bad. And isn’t that a step back from his first 5 years?) |

I knew things finished very badly for Coach Carmody at Northwestern, but I did not know how badly. His teams had an even poorer conference record his last five years than the first five years. (I have no particular feelings for or against Coach Carmody as I recognize we don't really have the players to do much this year no matter who the coach is. Maybe he isn't a good recruiter...that would explain his later difficulties at Northwestern and his current difficulties now.) |

Same story over and over. Other than a few outlier seasons, HC sports teams seem to consistently succeed only when they find themselves as the only scholarship school in their respective conference. Assuming we can't figure out another way to do this again, there needs to be a seismic culture shift at 1 College Street regarding how to succeed as a D1 school. It takes more than a coach for this. Also, hard as it may be for some to believe, you can't throw 97 million dollars at the problem either. It's a mindset first. Then it's about coaching, recruiting, and fundamentals. It's about admissions. I would have been willing to have no locker and practiced in a barn if it meant I would compete nationally as a college hoops player. Oh wait a minute . . .
I believe when trying to strategize ways to return to these so-called glory days in any sport, most observers have a hard time admitting the hard truth stated above. The rest is, as the said in the movies, "smoke filled coffee house crap."
Also, maybe some are right in saying the days of the PO have come to end.

I don't think (season ending in) 05,06,07 fit your narrative. 01-03 do. And as far as 01-03 go did Kentucky, Kansas and Marquette get runs for their money because we had scholarships and Lafayette did not? |

In 05-07 we were a fully ramped up scholarship program while others were still adjusting. In terms of those two NCAA games, being a team accustomed to winning helps a lot with confidence against tougher foes. I think that was a big part. Same with our nice OOC wins in football in the late 80s and early 90s. Big ‘mo (momentum) counts. Winning is like muscle memory. My point is that if we want to succeed now, in 2018, it’s going to take more than the same old tricks. This year has unfortunately been substandard, even when adjusting for being in the “rebuilding” phase. Additionally, Carm promised us that when taking the job this “wasn’t going to be a rebuilding job.” He actually said something like this. Also said he expected to win, and win right away. Suddenly everyone forgets that and acts like a rebuilding phase was the plan all along.

RW’s match up defense made us competitive, esp when NCAA teams had little time to prepare for it. It was unique.
IMO he is among the top 5 defensive coaches in last 20 years.
