I have always thought that the mark of a good assistant coach is one that has the ability to challenge the head coach when necessary and appropriate. Ultimately, the head coach will always have the final decision, but it's about how he gets to that decision.
In the case of Joe Scott, I wonder what kind of value he is bringing to the basketball program. Isn't he, essentially, a carbon copy of Carmody? We have looked at his teams at Denver and Princeton, and they look very similar in terms of style and stats to Carmody's teams. If he's supposed to be the defensive coach, well, he hasn't been doing a very good job in that department. If he is the "coach in waiting," well, that may be a little unsettling.
Carmody's coaching staff at HC has always had Kennedy and Owens on it. Last season, Scott replaced Driscoll. Given that Scott has been a longtime D1 head coach, I have to imagine he is being paid handsomely as the top assistant at HC (probably more than double what Driscoll made). Are we really getting our money's worth? I don't think so. Scott very well could be the highest paid assistant coach in HC and PL history. Who would be higher?
Carmody will be close to 20 games below .500 heading into his fourth season. If something isn't shaken up next year, I fear we are in serious trouble.

Do you seriously think anyone truly cares? Really?
I applaud your vigilance but this is PL basketball....nearly no one cares.

As I've said in other posts...it's the height of absurdity that this coaching staff is paid probably around half a million dollars to coach in front of row after row of empty seats in just about every venue in the PL.

Challenge Coach K , Knight, Wooden.... ? Challenge R. Willard ? Ask his assistants. Whom can you name ? my guess is that Scott and Carmody have a collaborative relationship based on years of trust.

A staff of Dean Smith, Clair Bee, Shaka Smith and Hank Iba couldn't do much better...we are what we are right now, a low-mid major program that can't recruit due to the league we are in, a program that has little support from alumni, students and locals, a program that has little potential other than to be a "glorified D1 program"....it is what it is, I'm at the "acceptance stage" of the mourning.

Issue is that every member of the staff played or coached at schools that ran a variation of the Princeton offense. Even Owens, as Bo Ryan's UW squads had Princeton offense undertones, so who knows anything else enough not necessarily to challenge, but to offer input?

I love how so much is made of running different types of offenses here....applaudable on the basketball expertise here...but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't mean a great deal. From what little I saw tonight, Lehigh played mostly 2-3....believe me, there are only so few things one can do against a 2-3....it's not rocket science...attack gaps, hit the hi-post and short-corner, reverse the ball etc...
Where do I cash my $20,000 monthly check for that expertise?

RW, like most good coaches, appreciated when his assistants gave thoughtful input. Keep word being thoughtful. “Challenge” may not be the best word, but SOV makes a great point in that nobody on the current staff is going to bring anything to the table that is different than the stuff that has resulted in a 37-52 (.416) record over the last 2 3/4 years. Do you think Bill Belichick wants Josh McDaniels and Matt Patricia to just sit on their hands and do what he tells them, or does he want them to think critically and find new ways to win games?

Scott very well could be the highest paid assistant coach in HC and PL history. Who would be higher? He might be. The only one I can think of who might have been higher is Dan Earl, who was Navy's Associate Head Coach after following DeChellis there from Penn State, where he had coached for six years. As you know, the Navy coaches' salaries are all paid by the Naval Academy Athletic Association, which is loaded with cash and willing to pay coaches a lot. DeChellis received a 7-year contract worth over $3 Million, so it wouldn't surprise me if Earl was over $100k by a decent amount. Other than Scott, I imagine the highest paid assistant coach in the PL currently, believe it or not, is Emmett Davis, who replaced Earl at Navy. Earl, btw, has won a total of 15 D1 games in three seasons since becoming the head coach at VMI, so he may be available to become someone's assistant again in 14 months or so.

Pretty sure that Scott is still being paid by Denver (he was let go in 2016 with two years left on his contract) unless I have it wrong. In that case my guess would be that they are paying him roughly the same as what any other Patriot League top assistant would be making.

That assumes his contract with Denver didn't have a buyout clause. I don't know anything about Scott's contract, but I know their previous coach - also fired - was bought out.

I would assume that if Denver is paying Coach Scott, it is part of deferred payment under a buyout of his contract. You can't coach at one school while being paid to coach at another. If Coach Scott's contract at Denver was bought out, he's free to coach wherever. If he's being paid because he's still under contract, he can't coach at HC. See Coach Kearney who was never bought out, but had to wait for the term of the contract before taking the job at Colorado

I think a not uncommon separation agreement would be that the coach continues to get paid less whatever they are making in a new job. See Brown, Milan

One possibility is that Coach Scott sees himself as a head-coach-in-waiting for when Coach Carmody's tenure ends???

In either event, believe the jury is still out on whether the program would benefit by getting more of the same thing - only slower - for the sake of continuity.

I think a not uncommon separation agreement would be that the coach continues to get paid less whatever they are making in a new job. See Brown, Milan I thought that was a straight buy-out, all set in place prior to the new job. Under the suggested arrangement, the old school would have to at least OK the contract. Otherwise College of Charleston would just pay Coach Brown one dollar and there's no incentive for HC to let him go

"unceremoniously"? What if there is great ceremony when Coach Carmody retires and the position is then Coach Scott's? Is that better somehow? The frosh - good recruits all IMHO - continue the development they have shown, do you want change only for the sake of change? Wouldn't that mean another new system and more adjustments for at least a year after that?

Wouldn't that mean another new system and more adjustments for at least a year after that? I like the frosh and actually would like to see Carmody back next year to see what he and the staff can do to develop these guys into PL contenders next years with two strong seniors in JF and KC. Next year's freshman class is perhaps the most important in 10+ years. Can't miss -- not sure how we're looking there as one thing I am not good at following is recruiting. I follow HC athletes once they are signed and then here and beyond.
A ceremony would be great -- Chuck's Steakhouse on Route 20?
I am assuming Carmody probably will not be here in 5 years (whether it's his decision or HC) and am hoping that when that inevitable change does occur that we look far beyond a staff that likely will have put together a skein of pretty unremarkable success when it's all said and done.
