Participation rates are great, but dollars and cents pay the bills. I don't deny that. The original statement was that a $1 donation would send a bigger message than none. Dollars and cents pays the bills and is more important than participation. Zero donation hits dollars and cents and participation and would be noticed. For the record, I would have contributed even if the BoT messed up. More like a theoretical discussion. Fortunately wiser heads prevailed and the point is moot Not giving (or giving zero dollars) can be interpreted as a mistake or the potential donor having forgotten or missed the deadline. I submit that, though the institutional hit might be harder by withholding one's gift completely, the message of one's displeasure might come across more clearly with the smallest possible gift > $0. And, when we're talking about giving either nothing or barely more than nothing, isn't it really about the message?

Jim and Tom, I know that you are both well aware that Holy Cross puts great stock in not only the total dollars donated but the number of alums giving, the 50%+ participation ratio always puts HC in a top tier level of giving. Sure, they want the dollars but giving nothing hurts the participation level more than the hurt from 50 cents from a dollar.
That said, I hope no poster does either.

I think they should run another 24-hour participation challenge right now, during the "The Crusader Stays" honeymoon of enthusiasm.
