Does that count only successful sacrifices ? Good point---if someone laid down a bunt that resulted in the man on first being thown out at second it would be scored as a fielders choice.......

Luck played a role, as it usually does in an upset. You don't want to count on getting line-drive double plays to end an inning or scoring three runs on only seven baserunners. HC played a clean game with clutch contributions by new faces, though. That's an encouraging way for a young team to start the season.
In the last five years, a league championship and runner-up. Wins against Mississippi State, Long Beach, USC, Nebraska and Houston. A good field, good indoor facilities now and a tenured coach. Four alums playing for MLB organizations. Sounds like a real program!

Ball Game Over! Crusaders Win! Theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Crusaders win! Down goes number 25 Houston. Depending on which poll you looked at, I saw them in the top ten in some places They bill themselves as #21 on their website so I was assuming that was the highest they got in a credible poll. Seems like their starter last night is one of the best pitchers in the country. Pre-season All-American.

Good. 7 guys combined to allow 6 hits to a top 25 team in mid-February. 6 walks and 2 HBP to go along with 11 Ks.

HC pitchers recorded 11 strike-outs, and only allowed 6 hits. In addition to the line drive double-play, our left fielder threw out a runner trying to score from second on a single in the fourth inning. Houston left 11 men on base.
I followed the game on LiveStats and Twitter. In the 7th inning, a Houston batter apparently hit a solid drive to left field that, according to a Houston fan, was held up by the wind or would have been a HR. Another Houston fan tweeted that he could not believe Houston could lose to "the worst pitching staff we will see all year."
Very nice pitching job by HC underclassmen. Winning pitcher Hedaya (soph from Tampa, FL) pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and had 4 strikeouts giving up only 1 hit.

The coaching staff should be commended for both recruiting and developing depth on the whole team, but especially in the pitching staff

Too early to be sure of much, but starting the season with a win (and the first inning with a 2-1 lead) do seem to bode well for the year. This looks like it could be a good line-up (6 HC hits match the 6 Houston hits and only 1 error - it did allow the bases to load up, but IIRC the defense held Houston without a score in that inning). It seems HC will have some talent on the mound with some good arms this season. Now take HC's first series! GO CROSS.

It is looking like the Holy Cross Class of 2021 will be making some marks in the HC record books.

rgs, I applaud you for being a 'glass half full' booster when it comes to any and all HC teams even when things look the bleakest - But, talk about a silly comment - what are you talking about ? these kids are one game into their careers (with about 200 more games to play)
back to the game - I listened to the middle innings and you could say our lf Alex Gionis was one of the heroes - in the 4th inning the announcers praised a diving catch down the line for one out and then he gunned down a runner trying to score from second on a single, for the final out.
safe to say this might be the first time (ever?) in D.1 baseball game where the winning team struck out 20 times in a 9 inning game

Haze, I started by saying, "Too early to be sure of much,..." How is that different from what you said? Do things really "look their bleakest" right now with a 1-0 record and that win over a top 25 team? If this is "the bleakest" I hope you are right.

Morning-after regrets:
Obviously, the results in the next two days may be quite different -- but it's nice to enjoy this victory.
When was the last time that the HC baseball team (which on most occasions opens the season against a tough Southern opponent) won the first game of the season?

In other words, a Houston fan is saying that Houston lost because the HC pitchers were so bad...I love the logic. We may get thumped in the next two games (and I don't "expect' to see another win against Houston), but that win is already in the books.

IMHO cgd is the best coach on campus. Imagine what he could do with a scholarship per year.

Could someone with a Twitter account go on the GoCoogs twitter site and make some comments to counter the obnoxious drivel cited above? "2 guys that dipped under 70 MPH"---too funny!
"We've never hit bad pitching well"-- that's like saying your basketball team "never does well against short, slow-footed defenders"....

The best part of the tweet is the idea that all junior high and high school kids in Texas throw 90+. Have another!

You have to give Coach D. credit for unsurpassed passion, hard work and effective national recruiting. HC has been getting good players other schools ignored as well as many who had bids from the Ivy League or service academies. No JuCo transfers and no redshirts will always be more of an issue than scholarships; when a top-25 team has a bad year, they turn over half the roster! So maybe 1952 will be the one-and-only CWS win but the Crusaders can field a fine team of real student-athletes and knock off the big boys occasionally. It's baseball!
Speaking of no red-shirting, Holy Cross GRADUATE Ben White is the named starter for Tulane tonight, their second game of the season against Wright St. He'd probably be taking the hill for the Crusaders tonight or tomorrow if Holy Cross were, say, UConn or St. John's.

Also, Hey Coog fans! How y'a doin? Sorry to put a crimp in the march to your first baseball national championship. We already have ours if you didn't know.We also have an NCAA basketball title too. I'm sure you have one...oh...I forgot...you guys choked out vs NC State and let that little coach prance all over the floor in front of you. Yes, you have a better team than us. But we don't give any scholarships. I bet your top chucker has a free ride. Hopefully your other players are just walk-ons like our players. As fans you sound like a few Nebraska fans last year, who, three games ago, saw us send their 'Huskers back home from the Corvallis Regional. Sad, so sad. Good luck tonight. You'll need it. Beware of the Crusaders if you make it to a regional this year. I don't have a Tweet account.

Well if the 7 guys we threw yesterday were our junk ballers, maybe we saved the heat for game 2!!
