Would adding drops of blood to the Crusader logo be a good idea? I think getting rid of the costumed mascot is ridiculous especially if it was the cuddly thing from the early to mid 2000s. Or a guy on a horse from pictures I've seen from times gone by

'reading between the lines' from the original announcement, this equivocation to political correctness comes as no surprise - spending $ on stripping all of the traditional images all over campus - just silly, but this is the world we're living in - pretty sad

I think we all knew this was coming. Many of our posters have suggested for months that this would be the outcome. It may be disappointing to some, but it represents a compromise that satisfies some of the constituencies of the College. All public discourse has become so polarized that those who reach good faith compromises are trashed on all sides. The guy did his job which is to cater to a community that includes pre Vatican 2 Catholic males and teenage transgender atheists, wealthy captains of industry and young professors. Changing the logo on some tee shirts does not change the College you attended, does not wipe the lessons you learned and the skills you developed from your brain, and isn't going to affect JF's shooting percentage. If you threaten to withhold contributions because of this decision you are just looking for an excuse not to give.
I just don't care that much and as one who wore a purple uniform for three seasons per year for four years, it doesn't change a thing.

I understand the point you make about being sensitive to different constituencies. However, it should not be anyone's job at Holy Cross to cater to any atheists, be they teenage or transgender or atheists of any kind. It is a Catholic college.

They will not stop until the nickname of the school is changed and all catholic identity is erased from the school. We can never give them one inch, they will take a mile. Sick and tired of all the politically correct b.s. There is no compromise with these people, they won’t stop until they get their way.

The President's job is not to cater to whoever yells the loudest. His job is to LEAD the school, but his complete lack of spine on this issue just shows that he is not a leader. Time for someone new, and hopefully someone who actually cares about HOLY CROSS.

Is it too late to change to "Purple Knights " or would this not fly with the PC crowd.?

Is it too late to change to "Purple Knights " or would this not fly with the PC crowd.? As I read the communication of the moment, there is no mascot at this time. The interlocking HC is simply symbology. The earlier letter announcing retention of the crusader moniker stated that the college would study what a new mascot would be. At that time, the Chair of the BoT said unequivocally that the mascot would not be a medieval knight who went on crusades, i.e., the Deus vult, Templar Cross 'crusader'. That mascot is ruled out.. As the college has said nothing about the purple knights, I assume they continue. Thus, potentially, a purple knight could be a future mascot, provided he/she does not take on the appearance of a knight who went on crusades. IMO, the college would probably wait and see with respect to a purple knight, assessing how far the white nationalists espousing white, Christian rule go with their appropriating Medieval symbols and events.

[/ ITo claify, suggesting to change from the Crusaders to the Purple Knights if we can keep the knight as a mascot.

So do we now change the lyrics to the first line of Chu Chu Rah Rah...”March on as knights of old...”? Would be interested to hear a suggested change from posters, particularly those who favor/favored elimination of knight imagery.
As I wrote in a post several months ago, one of the flaws in the process was bifurcation of the decision to change the Crusader nickname and/or imagery from the proposed replacement nickname/imagery. Seems to me it was incumbent on those who favored a change in one or both to present alternatives before a decision was made by the BOT, particularly when my sense is that a majority of constituents (students, alums,Trustees, administrators and faculty) were either strongly opposed to a change or generally in favor of keeping the status quo.
The failure to take the “coupling” approach has created a kind of limbo leaving both sides of the discussion dissatisfied.
On another note, IIRC the espoused rationale for the decision to re-name Mulledy Hall as Brooks/Mulledy Hall and not simply Brooks Hall was to serve as a constant “reminder” of the sins of the past at G’town and HC involving the sale of slaves to keep G’town afloat. Query whether that same rationale could be applied to keeping the Crusader nickname AND imagery with the point of emphasizing HC’s focus on the positive aspects of the Crusades (answering the call to defend the faith and the Cross) while acting as a constant reminder of the “sins” of the Crusades. I didn’t favor the “split decision” on Brooks/Mulledy Hall. If a change was thought to be appropriate, I favored re-naming it Brooks Hall simply because I saw no moral support for the G’town actions and Fr. Mulledy’s involvement in them. A similar “split decision” on the Crusader would not have suffered from the same total lack of moral support since, as far as I know, no one is seriously questioning the initial point of the Crusades-answering the Pope’s call to save the Eastern Church from being overrun.
Personally, I’m not in favor of the “constant reminder of the sins of the past” in either case. But it seems more appropriate in the case of the Crusader where there was some good intention involved.
