Not a real strong hire on paper but games are not played on paper. Hopefully he knows how to coach ‘em up.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Love the name. I wish him well and will obviously root for him. That said, I am nervous about relying on this guy as our play caller. Not even a coordinator at Tufts. Does, though, have the OC (as well as Head Coach) boxes checked, albeit at a low level. In Chesney we trust.

As head coach at St. Anslem, inherited a team that had gone 1-10 the previous year, led them to a winning record his first year, and only three wins his second year, --and was gone. At Tufts, he is listed as having no recruiting areas, an indication he may not have been full time?.

On January 30, Murphy was announced as the Offensive Coordinator at Georgetown. Apparently, he backed out of that position in order to take the position as Offensive Coordinator at Holy Cross. (Probably the ability to get an equal position without moving his family was a factor.)
Love his Twitter handle: @spredm_N_ShredM

Chesney would have had some first hand looks at his offense when he was at St A’s. That makes me feel better in that he knows what he is getting.

Georgetown posted the offensive coordinator job 11 days ago so apparently they knew this was happening well before we knew about it.

Apparently a coincidence that he coached at Dracut High, just like Edmund Murphy of HC Fame did for 40+ years (don't think they were related)

Really bummed that we lost Liam Coen, but given the timing, this is not a bad hire. Hopefully he can spread things out and get things moving quickly as he'll be facing off against an extremely experienced Defensive Coordinator in Jim Reid September 8th: bceagles.com/coaches.aspx?rc=345

If I remember correctly, the glass of the UMass coaches box was then smashed with a fist! Luckily, no one was seriously hurt below, as most fans had already left assuming that UMass had already won!!

Any particular reason for the skepticism, or just based on past practice and HC's track record?

I think the skepticism is predicated upon the level at which he has the most experience coaching (D3) A little more than a decade ago he was head football coach at Dracut High School for four years. For me, the one imponderable is how well he perceives the speed and agility of defenses at the Division I level. A question is whether he is related to Ed Murphy, who captained the 1942 HC team. Ed Murphy was a coaching legend at Dracut. www.bostonherald.com/sports/high_school/high_school_insider/2017/02/high_school_football_former_dracut_coaching_legend_ed

Any particular reason for the skepticism, or just based on past practice and HC's track record? We went from a former Quarterback at UMASS who was most recently the Offensive Coordinator at Maine (hired away to the NFL), to a former Fullback at Northeastern who was most recently the Running Backs coach at Tufts. It would be natural for objective observers to be skeptical about that transition (albeit a transition largely out of HC's control after Cohen got an offer from the Rams).

Getting Coen showed the high standards of Coach Chesney and I hope our new OC does the same.

I'm pretty sure he's not related. There was at least one family obituary that contained a detailed list of relatives; and there was no Patrick. Plus no local (Lowell area) paper mentioned anything like that; Ed was such a famous guy up there I doubt it would have gone unnoticed. Sadly, that list also mentioned that one of Ed's grandsons had died; the one that played for Harvard in the early 2000s.
