OK, here is the preliminary list from Massey - yes, I know it is far too early and that such ratings pre-season (and even in the early season) have little or no meaning. This is just for those who are interested and I made sure it was clearly labeled. Prediction / opponent (HC 30-14) at Morgan State (UNH 28-24) at New Hampshire (HC 26-21) at Albany (D 27-14) Dartmouth (HC 31-17) at Lafayette * (HC 21-13) Bucknell * (Har 31-19) Harvard (HC 35-13) Lehigh * (Col 27-24) at Colgate * (HC 27-24) at Georgetown * (FU 35-31) Fordham * at Yankee Stadium, NYC Rank Team (rating) 006 Dartmouth (1.33) 007 Harvard (1.32) 030 Fordham (1.00) 043 Colgate (0.88) 044 New Hampshire (0.87) 045 HOLY CROSS (0.84)050 Lehigh (0.76) 062 Georgetown (0.65) 071 Bucknell (0.61) 073 Albany (0.58) 104 Lafayette (0.32) 108 Morgan State (0.25) Top ranked FCS team in the nation was North Dakota State with a rating of 1.75.

Note: If the game were at HC, then Fordham would have been favored by Massey by only 3. (34-31)

Dartmouth rated 6th. The spirit of its former coach, the late Bob Blackman, must be pleased. (Apart from victories over BC, the football team snapping the Blackman-coached Dartmouth team's winning streak back in '66 is one of my most memorable HC football memories.) Also, a check of the FBS ratings shows that BC is rated next to last in the ACC just ahead of Syracuse. Perhaps the Eagles should eventually get out of the ACC and start playing the Tufts Jumbos and the Williams.College Ephs.

And I sort of did the same. At halftime, I ran back to my freshman dorm, Alumni, to totally change clothes. Didn't miss a second of the game. So, tell me guys, how was the halftime show? Did the Good Time Marching Band do their thing? (I really don't remember the HC band being called that while I was there) And, for the record, I ran a survey of "Class Favorites" for the Class of 1970 and will admit that, even though, it is anonymous survey, I said my freshman year favorite memory was the 7-6 win over Dartmouth in the pouring rain on Fitton Field as I went home for Thanksgiving and missed the BC game. My older brother went in my stead.

I have no memory of what the band did or didn't do that day. My most distinct recollection is of a Dartmouth player dropping a pass for what would have been a go-ahead two-point conversion and then needing a change of clothes when I returned to my room in the now famous Mulledy dorm.

Yes as we have posted in the past, we were up 7-0 and when Dartmouth scored, their coach wanted to continue the winning streak and not settle for a tie so they went for two.
Pass was at the end zone on the now closed end and my memory was one of our DBs just got a finger on the pass to deflect it for the win.

My older brother went in my stead. It was Homecoming, Harry Mulry was Chairman of the weekend; I was chairman of the committee charged with conducting the Homecoming Queen contest. In the prior years the chairman's or the date of someone from the committee won the contest. So we disqualified the committee dates. Pictures were sent to my PO box . Joe Tepas, Steve St Onge, John Gorter et al selected the 6 finalists. We had the 6 report to Mulledy lounge the morning of the game. It was pouring at that time. Frs Fallon & O'Halloran interviewed them and gave me their selection in an envelope. The plan was to present the finalists on the field at halftime and announce the winner at the dance. Before we left Mulledy we canceled halftime. Scharfman's donated a silver bowl for the queen. We had other donated gifts for the finalists. The donors were to be acknowledged at halftime while a parade of 6 sport convertibles of various makes brought the finalists onto the field,

Yes, thanks for the back story after all these years. I remember it took about 2 weeks for the blanket I borrowed from Joe Taylor (for my date) to dry out.

People wore plastic bags, and all sorts of real and improvised rain gear I donated my clippings and tickets from that game to HC last year. It was one of the two best that I attended at Fitton...the other was HC' win in '63 over Boston College. That was the one where HC got a safety when the BC center snapped the ball over his punter's head and out of the end zone. He must have liked it because he did it again in 1964.

I have to take this opportunity to give kudos to the Class of 1967 as perhaps the most illustrious in the last 100 years of Holy Cross. I have come to know about a dozen of them over the years at Fitton and the Hart Center and of course the famous Jack Lentz, Chris Matthews and others.
They set a great example for us freshman in 66-67.

Thanks for the shoutout sader1970 I too was at the game with my girl friend, now my wife of 47 years! It truly was a great game! Being a "day hop" I had a car, a Nash Rambler! We sat throughout the game huddled under an umbrella that really didn't do much good except keep the rain off our head and shoulders. I still remember seeing Coach Blackman dressed in his long black coat and hat as he walked on and off the field. My wife still talks about the fact that her raincoat was soaked and actually shrunk 2 inches when it finally dried out! I really think that is why she has been to very few football games since then. We both couldn't wait to get back to the dry confines of the "Rambler" parked on College Hill! Great times and memories!!!

I think that sader 70's memory of the Dartmouth game is spot on. Dick Giardi (RIP) knocked the 2 pt. conversion attempt down. Possibly, Beaven 302 is remembering the UMass game where HC was up 16-0 in the 4th quarter and then Greg Landry led UMass to a TD, a 2 pt. conversion another TD and then, on the 2 pt. try to tie the game, the wide open UMass tight end dropped the ball and HC prevailed 16-14.

He was at strong safety. He said the pass wasn't dropped but was coughed up by a hit by Tom Lamb. Giardi was a tremendous defensive player, I think he played 'rover back' i.e. a position that allowed him to deploy to the likely point of attack based on how the offense lined up.

OK, I can tell you that Tom Kelly's memory is totally wrong or we were in violation of NCAA rules. More likely, he is getting his games mixed up. Here's why. Tom Lamb was a classmate of mine, class of 1970 but graduated in 1971 as a result of being granted an extra year of eligibility due to the hepatitis outbreak. As such, the Dartmouth game in 1966, Tom and I were freshmen and freshmen were ineligible to play on the varsity. Soooo, if it was him who knocked down the pass, we are in a heap of trouble. I do believe it was "Mad Dog" who did it. I and my buddies were sitting on about the 5-10 yard line and the ball was not dropped by the defender, it was definitely tipped and, unfortunately, it was not tipped by one of my classmates. P.S. While I knew Tom just a bit, my son interviewed him for the story he wrote for the HC Magazine about the hepatitis outbreak. In that article, Tom is quoted as saying he was proud to be one of the few football captains who held that position twice (our senior year and again the following year when he came back for his "extra" year) and joked that he captained more Holy Cross losses than any other a la Spitler saying he was the worst player on the worst team in the worst league or something along those lines. www.holycross.edu/departments/publicaffairs/hcm/fall04/features/feature1.html
