It looks as though the HC women's soccer team will get a jump for 2016-2017 on all other Crusader teams. According to the site schedule, they play on August 19 (Iona), 22 (UMass) and 25 (Maine) before anyone else at HC gets started.

Yes, they will start at least a week earlier than any other sport. The others are not allowed to start until the following weekend under NCAA rules. This is one of the earliest opening dates ever for women's soccer. Players will need to report in late July.

How did women's soccer earn this "early" start?

August 19 is about a week before Freshmen arrive on campus. I think that's been the approximate schedule for women's soccer for a few years now.

August 19 is about a week before Freshmen arrive on campus. I think that's been the approximate schedule for women's soccer for a few years now. It's all based on counting back from the NCAA tournament dates. Official start date is defined as the Friday before the 12th weekend before the start of the Division I tournament. The women's tournament is a week earlier than the men's tournament, hence they start a week earlier than the men. They also start earlier than other fall sports due to a combination of having a huge number of teams in the tournament (i.e. 64) plus having weather concerns as late November approaches. Since the rules on start dates was change, start dates have ranged from 8/23 to 8/17, depending on the calendar. In 2012 they started on 8/17, which I believe was the earliest start date ever. Teams are allowed 21 practice days before their first game, and there must be one off day per week, so teams need to begin practice at least 24 days prior to the first game if they are to have the maximum allowable practice time.

Looks like field hockey will now start off the HC 2016-17 sports year. The ladies open with a game on August 16th at New Hampshire.
