Definitely an awesome schedule. Hoping some of these teams will be conference opponents in the near future.

Holy Cross just tweeted out a graphic which says the USA Under-18 Development team is playing an exhibition against the hockey team this year on 12/27. That team usually features 4-5 first round picks but that is in the middle of the U-20 Worlds so maybe the top of the line guys won't be with them but still EXCELLENT talent will be there.

This team will need to win some games in March to move the program forward. Regular season won't mean much if we disappoint yet again in Post Season. Need to start winning meaningful post season games.

On August 26th for three hours, there was this event.
"Men's Hockey - Vision Team Meeting The Athletic Department staff, coaching staff and alumni are having their annual meeting about the Holy Cross Men's Ice Hockey team. "
Don't know whether this is much more of a social event than a substantive discussion.

Sked is getting amped up in anticipation of a conference upgrade. Authorities who are professionals applying varied skills to this discussion ( with access to facts and figures and the contingencies being considereded ) wouldn't attempt to sound as confident as you. We know that H.C.'s and H.E.'s decision, at the very least, won't be happening anytime soon. Want to give everyone an announcement date...how about a year ? Want to scale back a little before it's so obvious to everyone else. The facts speak for themselves and questions are quite evident, even to the great "unwashed" outside of your inner circle: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_Division_I_ice_hockey_venueswww.scout.com/stadium-journey/story/1681079-college-hockey-arena-rankingsen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hockey_EastWhile some variables seem desirable for H.C. to want to take some initiative for a change, this is very complicated. It's foolish and embarrassing to pretend otherwise.

I'll look to you to propose a structure. Do you know what an agreement between H.C. and H.E. would look like by the end of this year or the________ ( 2016-17 ? ) season ? ( A legally binding agreement, a Memorandum of Understanding ? ) Will such an agreement include the following, and thereby obligating H.C. to the corresponding financial obligations ? "......H.C. will have agreed to upgrade W's hockey to D1 by ___? It will provide ____ scholarships to that end. H.C. will provide ____ space for "home" games fulfilling H.E.'s minimal requirements. H.C. will field a M's team consistent with scholarship levels in other H.E. teams. This is implemented or phased in thru an agreement mutually approved by H.E.'s schools ( Board ) and H.C.'s Board, to start in the ______ season and completed by the _________season...." I'm not sure where to start ? I think this will help clarify what some posters mean by H.C.'s plan to "upgrade" its conference affiliation ?

Not sure where this conversation is going. If HC and Hockey East reach an agreement for HC to join the conference at some point, they will enter into an agreement laying out HC's commitments re: facilities, scholarships and upgrading of the women's program. It would be a substantial undertaking by HC. Some believe HC is ready to make the necessary commitment. Some do not. Some believe Hockey East would be interested in HC assuming that commitment. Some do not. At this point, I don't think anyone here has enough inside info to add anything definitive. The most we can get is that some will report that HC is generally interested in joining the league and ready to make a substantial investment in hockey to make that happen. We shall see. Not an easy decision though I would personally like to see it happen.

Thanks HC 92. My interest is in flushing out the timing and financial obligation that H.C. will incur, should H.C. and H.E. reach a definitive agreement. I sense that the division of opinion about this decision on this board is divided between two camps. One camp represents those with a grounding in the financial obligation/performance/attendance/facility/schollie gap such an agreement requires closing. ( Oh yeah, is there an anticipated pro forma revenue forecast attached to the financial obligations ? ) The other side, while well intentioned H.C. supporters, seem to be oblivious to the impact such an additional agreement will have on the financial obligations H.C. Athletics have already committed to over the next few years, since football schoolies and ADNP's various hiring/scholly initiatives have been introduced ?

we are not oblivious as to any repercussions, financial or otherwise.
Holy Cross has been for 36 years oblivious to the real repercussions of brand erosion; great shame on them all.

I'm enthusiastic that the "possibility" even exists at this moment in H.C. history. I think the presumption that it can only mean good news that the "opportunity" has come up while an "athletic friendly" TPTB is taking other robust actions is naive. H.C. doesn't have unlimited resources. H.C. is juggling a lot of balls right now to atone for years of neglect of its "brand erosion," from several bad decisions across the college.. The H.E. opportunity timing may not be good!

IMO. this comes down to a money issue.
M/W Ice hockey, generated revenues / expenses, 2013-14, median values in thousands
Div I FBS 1089 / 4143 Div I FCS 506 / 1960 Div I No football 817 / 4235
The FCS expense values are significantly understated, as expenses for the Ivies exclude financial aid.
The values would understate as well schools like HC, where the number of scollies are significantly fewer than allowed by the NCAA. (Scollie aid amounts at a public institution are substantially lower than for a private institution.)
Generated revenues include contributions to athletic / booster funds directed for ice hockey; endowment distributions for ice hockey. _____________________
M/W ice hockey total expenses 2014-15 (in thousands)
HC 1801 BC 5346 BU 5441 Harvard 1813 Northeastern 4250 Providence 5060 Yale 1887 ________________________________ Number of private FBS schools playing ice hockey: (2) BC and Notre Dame. Our Lady doesn't have a woman's team.
Number of private FCS schools playing ice hockey: (10) Six Ivies, Colgate, Holy Cross, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart

And is anyone asking whether it's a good "brand building" strategy to get pummeled by the H.E., day in and day out ? At least for a few years. Even the ECAC scenario would have been a stretch performance wise.

Your lack of confidence is reflective of the institutional lack of confidence that has hamstrung Holy Cross for decades. I find it sad, even cowardly.
I have had children at better known institutions that are not better than we. I fact, they are less good..............but at least people know who the Hell those schools are. Take the bushel off the light. Live in the real world. Brand the great product or stop asking why the statement "I went to Holy Cross" is followed by "where's that?"

If ice hockey were so important in branding, there would be more than 12 private Div I football schools fielding an ice hockey team. And six of the 12 are Ivies,
Only one of the 12 plays on a non-school rink: Sacred Heart, at the Milford Ice Pavilion.

Fr. B's connection of improving H.C's overall athletic branding and the overarching desire to increase the reach of H.C. students' geographic footprint beyond Mass-New England-the Northeast is very sound. This is a long overdue necessity. The broad upgrade of M's and W's sports across the board is a manifestation of Fr. B's original idea that he sold to TPTB. Admittedly, H.C. had been sitting idly by for decades within a hotbed of college hockey while "lesser brands" have used hockey to elevate themselves. That's an unfortunate missed opportunity from the past. Not sure if Merrimack and UMASS-Lowell have diversified their student bodies or national name recognition because of these moves. An upgrade to H.E., within this overarching geographical footprint expansion, is not consistent with Fr.B's original notion. On its own, H.E. is a good opportunity. For Fr. B's overarching strategy for H.C., not so much.

Ice hockey is a regional brand, largely for the Northeast and along the Northern Tier. I am not aware of any Div I ice hockey teams below the Mason Dixon line.
Of the private institutions in HE, only one -- BC -- plays Div i football. IMO, a stronger case could be made for upgrading to HE (and spending $2.5-$3.5 million more a year for hockey) if HC wasn't fielding a football team. . ______________________
Could I find $2.5 - $3.0 mill;ion in NP's current budget to pay for HE? Probably.
But, in 2014-15, HC spent nearly $2 million less on football than did Villanova and Richmond. And about $4 million less on hoops than did Richmond. For those who would have HC jump for the BE, HC spent about $6 million less on hoops than did Villanova.
So I suspect NP already has a future use for that $2.5 - $3.0 million. Football will get some; HC surely now has, far and away, the most expensive men's hoops coaching staff in the PL. And the non-revenue sports will get some.
