AMHERST, Mass. – Luwane Pipkins scored a game-high 20 points to reach the 20-plus scoring mark for the 21st time in his career as the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team held off a pair of late runs from Quinnipiac in a 69-62 win on Wednesday night in the Mullins Center. Curtis Cobb and Carl Pierre both finished in double-figures for a Minuteman (5-3 Overall) squad that shot 7-of-13 from deep in the second half.
Both squads came out of the gate slow offensively as the score stood at 9-6 in favor of Quinnipiac (2-3 Overall) over eight minutes into the contest. The Minutemen responded by eventually going on a quick 5-0 to go ahead 17-13 on a Pipkins 3-pointer, outscoring the Bobcats 20-8 to finish out the half after going down by one for the final time on the night. Pipkins finished the night with a 7-of-15 shooting performance while dishing out a game-high seven assists. UMass heated up from the field shortly after, connecting on 3-of-4 shots during a span that saw the Minutemen go on an 8-0 to build a 29-20 lead. Defensively, UMass held the Bobcats one made field goal in their final 10 attempts of the first half to take a 32-21 lead into the break for halftime. Quinnipiac was held to 24.2-percent from the field in the first 20 minutes while UMass connected on just two of 12 attempts from deep.
It took just 3:16 into the second half for UMass to eclipse their made 3-point field goal mark from the first half as three different Minutemen connected from deep to push the lead to 43-26 with 16:44 remaining. As a team in the final 20 minutes, the Minutemen connected on 7-of-13 from range for nearly a 54-percent clip on their way to finishing the contest with a 48-percent shooting effort from the field. UMass led by as many as 21 points with 11:16 remaining before Quinnipiac strung together an 8-0 scoring run to pull within nine points just past the six-minute mark. Cobb connected from range for three of his 13 points to end a Minuteman scoring drought with 4:42 left before the Bobcats answered with another 8-0 scoring run late that was ended by a Pipkins' free throw with 19-seconds left as Quinnipiac pulled within seven.
Rashaan Holloway hauled in a tied for career-high 13 rebounds, including 10 in the first half, to lead all players while Pierre connected on 5-of-10 attempts to finish with 12 points. In addition to his 13 points, Cobb pulled down eight rebounds while Jonathan Laurent picked up nine boards to go along with seven points.
