I will be in attendance at tomorrow’s game with USA Hockey’s Under 18 team at the USA Hockey Arena. Hoping that several other posters will join me to see the Crusaders play their first game in 24 days. Then, the team wends it way back East to Erie, Pa. and Buffalo for games with Mercyhurst and Niagara. Will be interesting to learn the travel arrangements—all air, some air & some bus or all bus.
Hopefully, HC can pick up where we left off on 12/8. I believe that USA Hockey will be missing several players who are participating in the World Jr. Championships, including Jack Hughes (projected as the #1 pick in the 2019 NHL draft).

This will be very tough competition for us - this usa team has been playing games since September and beat Harvard and Dartmouth on their swing through New England in October. Their arena looks very nice. www.usahockeyarena.com/

Showcasing my ignorance of the subject, an "under 18" team is presumably made up of kids 17 and younger - basically high schoolers. Understanding that they are a national team, still, I would think their lack of experience would be something that a really good college hockey team, like the Hockey East schools, should have little trouble with. Heck, it's not like they are Canadians, eh?

sader1970. I think that purplehaze has it right-tough competition. What the USA team may give up in size and experience, they probably make up for in talent and sheer volume of games played. I would guess that a majority of their players will be NHL draft picks.

Well, have fun whatever the results. Root for your school or root for U.S.A. - can't go wrong!

Uh-Oh - some problems here - just saw in the game story this line which caught my attention (and Barry was tied for the team lead with 11 points !) "At the conclusion of the first half the season, Matt Barry and Will Conley have left the team to pursue other opportunities."
Don't know what year they were in - anyone know anything about this development ?

I would guess that a majority of their players will be NHL draft picks. The USA program is loaded with the top 25 or so players for the upcoming draft but a couple of the top ones like Jack Hughes and their goalie are with the WJC squad in Vancouver. The last time I saw that squad, Matthews was playing center and they tied eventual national champion Providence 3-3. The other time I saw the NTDP was Eichel playing center with McAvoy and about 7 other first round picks which are all NHL stars playing against the New Jersey Hitmen in Marlboro. A result for Holy Cross is a success as this USA team is set up to win the IIHF U-18 world championship every year with the barnstorming tour. They gave wins over Notre Dame, Michigan, and St Cloud who have all been ranked in the top ten this season. Harvard also lost them

End of first period. USA 2. HC 1. Shots on goal were USA 9 and HC 6. Crusaders got off to a slow start and gave up the 2 goals in the first 3 minutes of the game. Then HC scored on its first shot on goal (Robinson) and from that point on the play was even. Only one power play (for USA) and HC did an excellent job on the penalty kill. Gordon in goal for HC. Nixon warmed up and looked like he was moving well. I would expect him back soon. Go Cross!

Conley was a pretty good recruit on paper and had played in 9 games before leaving the team. Definitely not a positive development no matter the reason for the departures. Pine definitely did not help the hockey program during his tenure at HC. New guy will have a bit of a mess to clean up here.

End of second period. USA 3 HC 1. Second period shots on goal-USA 13 HC 10 for a two period total of USA 22 HC 16. Only goal of period scored 10 seconds into a 5 on 3 power play. HC has killed both 5 on 4 power plays well and USA killed the only HC 5 on 4 well. USA carried the play for most of the period up until the last 3-4 minutes. Gotta gear up the “O” in the 3rd period.

How much did they beat Harvard and Dartmouth? Remember their best player and the upcoming number 1 overall pick in the 2019 draft Jack Hughes is with the World Juniors team and their goalie Spencer Knight is also with them.

As reported, final was 6-3. USA took a 5-1 lead early in the 3rd period with the fifth goal coming on the power play. Then HC struck for 2 quick goals to cut the lead to 5-3 with 1.5 minutes to go. HC did not replace goalie Beau Collins (who replaced starter Eric Gordon with 10 minutes to go in third period) with the extra skater and USA scored the final goal with both teams at even strength with less than a minute to go.
Every player on USA roster had a 2001 birth date. Pretty impressive collection of talent, especially with Hughes and Knight overseas.
Confirmed that the entire trip is a bus trip. Team staying in Plymouth for several more days and going to Red Wings game tomorrow, then on to Mercyhurst and Niagara.
Heard that Barry may be transferring. No info on Conley. Neither one is on the roster on HC website or today’s game program.

I wonder if the Miami coach will be more of a players coach than Berard is.

This report on Matt Barry confirms what I had heard on New Year’s Day at the USA-HC game. Hopefully, team will start to turn it around tonite vs. Mercyhurst.
