Mass. – The Holy Cross women’s hockey team tied Maine, 2-2, on Saturday afternoon. Holy Cross took a 2-1 lead in the third period after playing down a goal for much of the game. The Black Bears scored with 0.4 on the clock to send the game to overtime. The Crusaders move to 1-18-3 and 1-14-1 in Hockey East and the Black Bears move to 12-8-2 and 5-8-2 in league play. Just over six minutes into the opening period, Maine capitalized on a five-on-three power play opportunity to score the lone goal of the period. Maine held the advantage in shots in the first period, 11-7. Jada Brenon recorded her 12th start of the season and turned aside 10 shots in the first 20 minutes. The second period was quiet as neither team converted. Maine had a slight advantage in shots, 11-10. Holy Cross had two power play opportunities and generated chances on each. On the power play in the third period, Holy Cross generated a great opportunity that was stopped by the Maine defense, but Maeve Reilly followed up the play with her sixth of the season. Julie Matthias put the Crusaders up, 2-1 on a rush and after Hannah Gillis broke up a play in the defensive zone. Maine tallied the game-tying goal with 0.4 to go on the clock after skating for nearly two minutes with an empty net to force the game into overtime. Each team recorded one shot on goal in the five minute overtime frame, but neither converted. The Black Bears posted 38 shots to the Crusaders’ 24. Brenon capped off the game with 36 saves. HOW IT HAPPENED: 1-0 MNE (1st – 6:07, PP): From the point and then to the left corner, Michelle Weis passed across the slot to Celine Tedenby on the back door for a five-on-three power play goal.
1-1 HC (3rd – 7:09, PP): From the point, Antonia Matzka sent in a shot that Carlie Magier tipped in front of the net that forced Maine’s Carly Jackson to make a save and fall out of position. On the near post, Maeve Reilly snuck the puck over the goal line.
2-1 HC (3rd – 13:15, EV): Hannah Gillis broke up a Maine rush on the Crusaders’ defensive blue line and rushed up the center of the ice, creating a three-on-two. Gillis fed Julie Matthias on the wing, who cut towards the goal and wristed in a shot.
2-2 MNE (3rd – 19:59, EV EA): After an offensive zone faceoff, Maine sent a shot toward goal that ricocheted to the back door for Tedenby to score with 0.4 on the clock.
NOTES & NUMBERS: The Crusaders went 1-4 on the power play. Hannah Gillis recorded her first assist and her first point of the 2018-19 season. UP NEXT: Holy Cross will complete the series with Maine at the Hart Center on Jan. 13 at 1:05 p.m. -Go Cross!-

We lost 8-0 to Maine two months ago and got outshot 43-15. The women are definitely improving rapidly.

We lost 8-0 to Maine two months ago and got outshot 43-15. The women are definitely improving rapidly. My opinion was Holy Cross was pretty much even or very slightly worse than Maine. Didn’t see much talent difference between n the two squads. Maine did turn it on for the final five minutes

Of course, they might be angry come tomorrow’s game.

Was at the game.... exposing my girls to some hockey before the men's hoop game. HC really played an inspired 3rd period to take the lead. Obviously the last-second tying goal was a killer. HC barely missed a 3/4 ice empty-netter, instead went for icing with 5 seconds left and brought the faceoff back to HC end. HC obviously put all defenders in front of the net... Maine won the draw, threw the puck on net and I couldn't see much in the scrum, even though I was sitting right at that end of the bleachers. Then the puck was in, right before the green light went on.
Definitely didn't seem to be much of a talent gap. Maine probably had the edge in attack zone time, but it wasn't egregious.

Perhaps, HCWIH is improving statistically as the season plays out ? Perhaps they look better to the naked eye ? Is there data to back this up--supporting the notion that "respectability" is not that far off ? At what point ( in years ) will "give them some slack--we're in the process of adjusting to the HE" no longer be a credible defense, if this performance gap ( data/results ) persists ? www.uscho.com/rankings/pairwise-rankings/d-i-women/www.uscho.com/conference/hockey-east-women/hockeyeastonline.com/women/statistics/index.php

Post is only d-1 in name as they play a very heavy d-3 schedule also. I give holy cross credit for not scheduling easy games against d-1 or d-3 teams this year

Four or five full recruiting classes. Should see at that point how the program stacks up with its competitors. Hopefully not a perennial doormat like so many others on the hill.
