In thinking which way Blossom will lean, I'll take the field rather than anyone on this list. I just read about Josh Scwertz. Very impressive although it would seem to me he would already have had opportunities to leave the D2 program he has been the leader of for many years. Sure sounds like the man can coach. It sounds like he has lived most if not all of his life in the South so I suspect we don't have climate going for us.

At the risk of going out on a limb here, if he wants to give it another shot in D1, why is Chris Mullin out of the question?
Let me guess: 1. Didn't do "that great" at SJU (although who can at SJU in the present day?). 2. Would never coach a mid major. 3. Would need more money than HC can pay. 4. Would not do well recruiting under the AI. 5. Would not want to live in Worcester. 6. Will be going back to pro ball.
I'll go back into hiding now.

Maybe not. On the other hand, he did pretty well considering his lack of experience. Maybe he'd improve quickly at a school like HC. He's a scrapper to some degree. Who knows.

Andy Toole - Head Coach at Robert Morris - Former Player at Penn - Former Assistant at Lafayette.
Took Robert Morris to the NCAA in 2015
New AD at Robert Morris was just hired- He may be looking to make a change.
Mentioned as a candidate when Carmody was hired

2. He couldn't be hired four years ago because he had zero head coaching experience. That is not a risk any AD would take. Buffalo AD took that risk on Nate Oats. Iowa State AD took that risk on Fred Hoiberg. OK, sorta. I wasn't saying that nobody can ever go from assistant to head coach. Obviously, almost every head coach starts as an assistant. It was just that MD couldn't given that he didn't have the resume to allow a new AD to take a chance. He was not even technically a college coach at the time. He had never played the game beyond high school. Oats was an assistant at Buffalo when the job opened up, and had at least coached eleven seasons of high school. Hurley stuck his neck out for him. Hoiberg was a legend at Iowa State and had a decade in the pros. An AD could hire him without experience without running the risk of losing his job. You could have suggested Kevin Ollie, too.

Isn't it winning programs that have heir apparents? Losing programs usually have no parents, they are orphans. heirs apparent

In fact, that might have been out there as a prerequisite.

Sean Kearney did not fail because he had no head coaching experience. ---------------------- If the prerequisite for becoming a head coach was having head coaching experience, there would be zero head coaches in the world.

After the conduct that caused GWU to fire him, it's hard to believe HC would even put him on a list of coaches to interview - even though he is a good coach in a very narrow sense. Good gracious; his conduct was not unforgivable! He got caught up in the maelstrom of "coaching correctness." I'll bet 100 bucks Coach K, Bobby Knight, and countless others did the same or worse in their careers but that their timing was not as bad.
LONERGAN will win!
Mike Rice.

I never thought that's why Coach Kearney failed. However, during the search that brought us Coach Brown, HC was very definite about wanting someone who had head coaching experience. I forget, but that might have been true of the Coach Carmody serach as well It is possible for all D-I program to have experience as a prerequisite and let the initial head job be at the D-II or D-III level. When Quinnipiac hired long time UConn assistant Tom Moore, he did have the head job at Worcester State on his resume. --------------------------------- Please do not mistake my pointing out that HC was looking for experience with any idea that I don't think Coach Daignault would have been a fine hire. I might not be vocal about it on the board, but I was always a fan of his

Mike Rice?
I spoke with a guy who was a basketball manager at Marquette during the late 90s when Rice was an asst coach there under Mike Deane. He had NOTHING good to say about Rice.
I will say he is not quite as bad as this coach:

Mike Rice. I assume this is a comment on Lonergan. Mike Rice will never coach college basketball again after what happened at Rutgers.

-Brad Soderberg: Several different head coaching stops, above .500 at each stop, and in his 4th season under Tony Bennett in a style that would translate very well to HC. Don’t know anything about him beyond his resume.

Bobby Knight yes, Coach K no (as much as I dislike him). And I wouldn't want Bobby Knight for my head coach any more than Lonergan. Having 13 players transfer out in 5 years is telling - especially when the majority talked of abusive behavior by Lonergan. You can't justify every bit of bad behavior by shooting the messenger.

Landry Kosmalski - head coach at Swarthmore, formerly an assistant under Mckillop at Davidson, where he also played. Was looking Kosmalski over some today. . . . He was a two-time All-SoCon selection, a very good rebounder. Was apparently tasked with coaching post players as McKillop's assistant. Swarthmore was 29-4 and made it to the D3 title game this past year. Elite Eight, 2017-18. His 2016-17 team led the country in rebounding margin, and his clubs have ranked among the top nationally in FG% defense.
Don't know if he's interested, but he checks a lot of boxes and is in his early 40s. Could do worse than somebody from the McKillop tree.

It is interesting to read names with which I am TOTALLY unfamiliar. Some sound quite promising from the small blurb that accompanies each name as it is suggested. I am trying to step back and to watch the process with a bit of distance. It will possibly tell us a lot about new ADMB and his operating style...even if it is not "all we need to know."
