I think where Confesor and DiMichele hurts is that they are young. They have a lot of energy and relate great to recruits.
Now have to replace another coach. So this is the third coach already to turnover in only 1 year.

He is a good guy and coach, and was a good teammate. Sorry to see him go, but coaching is a transient profession and he has to what's best for his career. I wish him the best. Maybe AFA will throw more than 150x next year with him coaching the WR's.

Ouch. Recommended by Nate? Taylor Stubblefield was the WR Coach. He headed to Coral Gables.

Just curious....what are we talking about with Ari's salary at HC last year and AFA's next year? 50-60K vs 100K or so?

A position coach in BCS has to make more than a coordinator in FCS. And Ari wasn't even a coordinator.

Lot more than salary considerations going from 1AA HC to 1A AFA

Agreed but it just seems like we can't retain guys as coaches anywhere near than we used to. I know, different world etc...but we did assemble some unbelievable football staffs when we were 1-AA/FCS in the 80s.

I think that Ari's move is a plus for HC football in the long run, even tho' we will miss him. It is good for our recruits to see that playing for the purple can lead to a satisfying career in the sport.

I know, different world etc...but we did assemble some unbelievable football staffs when we were 1-AA/FCS in the 80s. The salary disparity between those two levels in the 80s vs now is different by an order of magnitude.
To wit: Confesor at Air Force today may very well be making as much money as Mark Duffner did when he took the Maryland head coaching job in 1992.

It's called "inflation," Ray. When I got my first "real" job in 1971 and was making about $10,000, I felt "rich" and was able to buy a new Mustang.

Thanks, I get the concept. But if you think salaries have inflated at the P5 schools at the same rate as HC, I’ve got some news for you.

At P5 schools, even the players get paid more today.

I can see P5 salaries etc. but the AFA plays in the Mountain West Conference....still FBS, yes, but are they paying significantly that much more than HC? They probably are, but the level of football of that conference and other G5 conferences is really not a quantum leap from the better FCS programs in the country in terms of play on the field, attendance at games, media attention etc. etc.

As AFA is a government institution, would the coach salaries data be publicly available?
okay I searched for "Air Force academy football coaches salaries" and found a bunch of articles. One from 2016 said its top five assistants averaged $215,000. That included linebackers coach and d line coach at $194 and $182,000

Ari will undoubtedly make a lot more money at the AFA than at HC and his future as a coach in football will be brighter with the AFA on his resume than if he remained at Holy Cross. We should be happy for him and wish him well . . . . . until and if we see AFA on a future Holy Cross schedule.
P.S. Ray, you know I was joking, right? But your statement was comparing a head coaching job - Duffner at D-IA Maryland vs. an Ari assistant at D-IA AFA. If Ari makes more at AFA than Duffner made at Maryland, I am pretty sure that while that may be true in absolute dollar terms, it is not true in relative terms. I guarantee you that the head coach at Maryland today makes more than Ari will make as an assistant at AFA today.

Because I looked it up, Duffner’s base at Maryland was reportedly $120K per year. My guess would be that Ari will likely make something like $150K at AFA. Best wishes to him.

92, would you guess that the head coach at Maryland is making more than $150K?

Post by HC92 on Feb 10, 2019 7:57:09 GMT -5
No need to guess. The Maryland head coach will reportedly make a base of $2.5M next year.
