Been quite a while since HC had a high-profile commencement speaker.

Hey, TR at Holy Cross is old news, hoops! Literally. We call it "history." BTW, when I attended, I never called it the "College of the Holy Cross" - it was Holy Cross College. Or just Holy Cross. Yeah, I know what the official name was/is.

You bring up a good point, mat. Holy Cross seems to go out of its way to get people hardly anyone has ever heard of but who have led exemplary lives. I wonder if this is a factor in the decline of our reputation? During commencement season, you will often get at least a short blurb about one school or another when someone of great fame speaks. Our speakers are literally talking to the wind in Fitton or, more recently, the PA system at the DCU.

With high profile commencement speakers, there is a need for high profile security. Maybe one of the reason to keep commencement at the DCU center instead of Fitton Field. Also ADA compliance,is another reason, as elderly parents and grandparents find Fitton a difficult venue on graduation day.
Does anyone remember the commencement with W. Wilson Goode, who was mayor of Philadelphia?

Listen—-my class had Mabel Lang as our commencement speaker so it’s hard for me to feel sympathy for other classes and their suboptimal speakers.....

Wilson Goode, who was mayor of Philadelphia? I do! I do! It was my commencement. Goode was only an honorary degree recipient, though. Speaker was Paul Nitze - at the time arms negotiator for President Reagan The week or so before commencement Goode, then mayor of Philadelphia authorized the use of an incendiary "bomb" on a row house where a radical group was holed up. The bomb worked and took out the house, but it also burned down an entire city block and 10 people or so died. Remember a pacifict group was there protesting Nitze and had a banner made that said "Don't Build Bombs!" and they were holding it at the top of the stands at Fitton. They apparently had that sign made well in advance and when they realized that Goode would be there too, they hastily added in a ^ between the word Build & Bomb so the revised sign read Don't Build (or Drop) Bombs. Far more memorable than anything Nitze said that day! .

Outgoing HC president, Raymond Swords, S.J. '38 was ours in 1970. Outstanding. Look it up in Fr. K's book. 1998 speaker was Maria Shriver, still married to Arnold at the time. Spoke a lot about her family connections to Holy Cross (brother is HC alum and parents were honorary alums as I recall, she being a Georgetown grad I believe). She turned her speech into a mini-book.
Mostly our commencement speakers have been invisible. TR, LBJ and the like don't look like they will be coming any time soon. Believe that years ago it was traditional for the governor of Massachusetts be the speaker. We'd prefer to have a missionary back from Africa or the Amazon. Did (Saint) Mother Teresa of Calcutta speak at a commencement? That would have been a "get!" Did we have Fauci one year?

Three others I saw at HC
1974-- Art Buchwald gave a very funny commencement speech at my brother's graduation. I recall a key line, paraphrasing,: "some people say that I hate President Nixon--that's simply not true: I worship the quicksand he walks on"
1976-- Senator Teddy Kennedy
2009--Senator Bob Casey did a very good job at daughter #1's graduation

Politics aside, always wondered whether we tried to land Obama or Biden when they were in office. Favreau was the Obama connection and Biden’s brother-in-law is an alum. Many years back, the school had an opportunity to possibly land McCain but there wasn’t much interest to pursue.

Well, in ‘67 we had Gov Volpi of Massachusetts and any missionary would have been far better. Volpi was a joke.

The year before me got NY governor and presidential hopeful Mario Cuomo. The year after me got baseball commissioner Peter Uberroth. He was also fresh off of organizing the most financially successful Olympic games that had ever been. Somehow I thought my year got the short end of the stick
