Don't everybody start going to the mattresses please. Tom Hagen was German-Irish. Amazing the amount of useless knowledge I can remember from forty years ago when I now usually have to make two trips to the store because I forgot the main thing I was going to get.

No it wasn't. It was made in the context of a person 100% guilty getting off and the other person claiming the same when everything points to that being a lie.
The quote could be from any movie; that one happens to be telling a story you don't like (created by Italian Americans like me).

Amazing the amount of useless knowledge I can remember from forty years ago when I now usually have to make two trips to the store because I forgot the main thing I was going to get. I appreciate your good intentions. However, the reference to Hagen was made in the context of the Godfather/Mafia. Of all the possibilities, is it just a coincidence that a comparison of a Pitino ( Italian American) is made with a Mafia character? This is another example of an Italian-American being stereotyped with the Mafia label. It is offensive. I apologise because I remember the slights. In the "can't win" department, Italians are now lumped in with all us other former "Ethnics" as deserving criticism for having white privilege.

Tim, If as you write "The qoute(sic) could be from any movie" then why did you choose a character from "G2", a Mafia movie to compare an Italian- American to? Surely, you must be aware of the history of the stereotyping of I-A's as Mafia gangsters and killers. It is an insulting ethnic stereotype if used against non-Mafia I-A's. After many complaints this type of stereotyping has largely been dropped in recent years. Was it an unconscious choice on your part? Maybe , you didn't realize or were unaware that what you wrote was an insult. Possibly, you did not know. I have not accused you of being a bigot so there is no need to be defensive. I like to believe that you meant no harm or were unaware of the offensiveness of your post. But, I am telling you that your post was extremely offensive as it slanders not only Pitino(terrible reputation) but also millions of other people who have worked to eliminate the use of this stereotype. Try to look at your post from another person's perspective. Please think about it. Peace. Goodness,mm67 How did you possibly survive 1967 -2016 without official safe spaces? A fine coach, far from an easy job Probably less challenging than Seton Hall and Providence though, and Willard and Cooley have figured out how to win there.

Maybe less than Seton Hall, but PC has had a solid fan base for many consecutive years. St. John’s fan base has shrunken steadily for 30 years. The advantage it used to have with giving players a legal stipend in place of board since it had no dorms has been gone for a while. It has attracted few NYC players in the last 20 years. A long time since Mullin, Berry and Jackson, even Lopez and Werdann. Ponds this year was an exception.

I wonder if there is a direct correlation with much of the local NYC talent leaving for prep schools in New England and elsewhere and the decline of St. John's basketball.
It's hard to believe, but you'd have to go back to Ron Artest and Mike Jarvis to find the last time St. John's was consistently good.

More talent has left for New Jersey high and Prep schools than to New England. I do believe there is such a correlation. Also with such a commuter school student body, they have rarely had much of a home court advantage in either Carnesecca or the Garden.

A series of bad coaches didn't exactly help their cause -- Norm Roberts, Steve Lavin, and Chris Mullin.
Roberts was probably their best coach of the three.

St John's could, however, pay cash to students to compensate them for the cost of a NYC apartment since there was no on-campus housing for athletes for many years. For NY area students, that cash was nice to pocket with a full scholarship on top of it.
