Found this article pretty interesting and, of course, strikes close to home. www.hoyafootball.com/features/1951.htmMy dad knew two of these guys (on their 1950 team, the final one); both are still around, each pushing 90 (if 90 hasn't been pushed yet).

Interesting, but sad.

Fascinating history. Thanks for the link.
That the President of Georgetown was forced out because of alleged "concupiscence", well, my goodness.

A proposed football league of HC, BC, Fordham, GTown, Colgate, Temple, Penn St and Pitt....would have been interesting.

It could have been the Big East..... also the proposed expansion of the Ivy League in 1982-84 with Holy Cross & Colgate being added to make it a 10 team league. A 6-2 presidential vote closed the proposal.

A 6-2 presidential vote closed the proposal. Never heard of this one at the time; then again, never heard (and don't believe) of Big East Offer #2*, only Big East Offer #1 and A10 offer. But, let's assume it's true. 6-2 in favor but it had to be unanimous? Or 6-2 against? If "in favor", Derek Bok and who else? *never made any sense to me there'd be a second offer. 3 or 4 years down the road HC didn't bring anything to the table that the Big East wanted or needed.

6-2 against expansion of Ivy League, Dartmouth & Yale were in favor.
Late 40's & 50's other major football schools in East were - Syracuse, Rutgers, Army , Navy with the list from the Hoya History article. Ivy football was on par with these schools with stadiums to hold large crowds as well. Regional interest was much more appealing than national interest at the time.

I wonder if this is even a remote possibility now, and might deserve a second effort, even in a clandestine fashion. I would love to see it.

I would see zero chance of the Ivy League expanding. The member schools would not want to dilute the brand equity and should be extremely happy with what they have now.

Equity being the operative word. Imagine HC or Georgetown or any number of other fine institutions going up against those endowments? Georgetown's is half of Brown's which is in turn 10 times less than Harvard's. Certainly the "brand recognition" would increase the endowments but how long would that take; a couple of generations?
