So our head coach has the staff he wanted, including the OC. Given the title of this thread and suggested replacements, who would have thought...?

I am underwhelmed by several of the new coaches. This is not a Rick Carter coaching tree that is being assembled on Mt. St. James.

This is not 1981, and HC is no longer one of the premier 1AA programs in the country. Do you really expect the likes of that era's staff?

Comsidering that these guys are replacing an impressive group in Confessor, DiMichele, Noonan, and Colangelo, Gilchrist and DeAndrade look like good backfills, but a guy from AIC and a guy who has primarily been a Worcester high school coach are not exactly jumping off the page, especially from a recruiting standpoint. As mentioned in the other thread, my biggest concern is with the OC, who looked like he was in over his head last year.

Because you know so much more about hiring a football coaching staff in 2019 than Bob Chesney does. Please stick to your spreadsheets, extrapolations and Wild interpretations.

Do you think Pucko and the guy from AIC are good replacements for DiMichele (former HC captain) and Noonan (former Rutgers captain)? Of course Chesney knows more about hiring a staff than anyone here, but that doesn’t mean he’s infallible.

Couldn't tell you. But I know he knows more than any of us about what he is looking for. Maybe he is looking for continuity, someone who will stay for 2/3+ years. Someone who has run his system, or recruited a specific region. Or some other factor he values. But whatever it is, I'm going with his gut intuition over anyone on this board.

Chesney should have paid DiMichele.

Doesn't make much sense to use what Carter's staff became as a measuring stick - doubt that was obvious before the fact.

Mike Pucko is an outstanding coach. If you think otherwise you just don't know what you are taking about.

We can overthink just about anything around here. We’ll be fine. We’re not going to win or lose football games this Fall because of a bunch of 20-somethings moving around in position coach slots. I am confident Chesney is hiring guys who can do the job for which he is hiring them.

Love this board! Chesney is the savior of football. Oh wait the coaches he hired are awful what is he doing! 😂.
I would think it’s safe to say your coach knows more about football than folks on a message board no how long some have watched football.

I would rather judge a coach (or coaching staff) after seeing how they conduct the season (both practices and games) and their final record. To judge them just on paper is before a single game is played is (IMHO and to be kind) premature.

The point of this board is "discuss" the success or potential shortcomings of Holy Cross Football. The staff is a disappointment as a whole (there are a few exceptions) and we will have another losing season next year. Why is 5 wins with our 2018 schedule seen as a huge breakthrough for Chesney? We accomplished very little and should be given the right to question the direction. How does Murphy not get replaced as the OC after last year? What do you have to do to get fired!!!!!!! ?

If I had Murphy's career resume as a football coach, I think I would be dangling from a bridge somewhere. No doubt we were all frustrated by the play calling at times, even those who, like me, are not experts on football. Are there stats we can access that give us an indication of the offensive coordinator's effectiveness? I decided to look at some of the basic ones for years past so we could contrast them to 2018. Of course, we know that the players are a huge element of the equation: make me the offensive coordinator and I'll do just fine if Jimmy Brown is our running back and we've got Steve Young behind the Hannah brothers throwing to Rice, Gronkowski, and Moss. Year----Yds/Rush---Yds/Pass--3rd Down Conversions %---4th Down Conversions %
2011---4.1---6.8---37%---48% 2012---3.2---6.4---42%---43% 2013---4.1---6.6---47%---60% 2014---4.0---6.1---46%---69% 2015---3.9---6.5---47%---48% 2016---3.2---6.6---37%---50% 2017---4.1---6.4---37%---57% 2018---3.3---7.2---30%---61%
Looking only at this 8 year period, three numbers stand out to me: (1) We need to do better in the running game--gain more yards per carry--although I am aware that, illogically, QB sack yardage lost counts against rushing yards(2) I am very surprised that we had our highest yards/passing attempt last season with all the anguish we had over who was at QB and the plays we were running and (3) the third down conversion number looks really low--on key plays we were just not getting it done. I draw no conclusions from the 4th down conversion as I see that could be influenced by whether the coach likes to gamble on 4th, right? You have to go for it on third down but not on 4th.

Another thing you have to factor in is the padding of stats when the game was out of reach in 2018 (junk time). If you take out the 4th quarter, our numbers will look absolutely abysmal.

Is there a way that we can isolate statistics from the first three quarters of all games in 2018? Maybe even the first half of all games in 2018? I would LOVE to see Murphy's first half game plan for opponents in statistical format.. haha
In two games last year, Wade almost had as many interceptions as he did completions at halftime.

It's pretty irresponsible to say that a coach's former prowess as a player (or lack thereof) is an indication on how well or poorly a coach's career will play out. Some of the greatest players of all time failed miserably as a coach. And some of the best coaches in sports were average to below average players (a simple Google search will show this). Further, it's equally irresponsible to link a coach's record as a head coach to his ability as a coordinator. There's a lot that goes into a coach's career record -- how much emphasis is placed on the program by the school? What kind of staff is assembled? What is the culture of the program? What is the ability of the coaching staff to recruit? And frankly, some people just aren't cut out for a head job. Sometimes a former head coach will blossom as a coordinator because they are able to focus on one thing -- offense (or defense, or a position). I think we all need to step back, give Murphy another season (not to mention a quarterback that is FCS quality as well as REAL talent on the offense) and see what happens. If the offense takes a step back, I will lead the "Fire Murphy" facebook page.

Imagine if we had hired an assistant with this coaching resume:
RPI (2014) Graduate assistant
2015-2016 Out of Football
Amherst (2017–2018) Defensive line coach
