The AIC men's hockey team received a VIP escort through downtown Springfield by the Springfield Police, the Hampdem County Sheriff's Dept. and the Campus Police on their way to Buffalo for the AHA semifinals. The Springfield Republican/Masslive.com has a large color photo of the Mayor of Springfield posing with "Rex" the AIC mascot. Did any Holy Cross Team receive VIP treatment from the local gendarmes and politicians the last time we reached the league semifinals in any sport?
What will the Springfield Constabulary and City Fathers do now that AIC is headed to the NCAA tournament? BTW, congratulations to the Yellowjackets. Sting somebody in the tournament!

We really haven't been "Wisstah's team" since the 1980s...truly, probably earlier. Maybe, a bit during RW's hoop run in the early 00s.

The campus doesn't even send it's teams off. Why should the city?

AIC is the 16th (last) seed in the tourney and plays no.1 St. Cloud St. in Fargo, N.D. Friday night - another escort through Springfield if they win that one !

Very nice. I'll take that send-off over a Police escort through Springfield...during the daytime anyway😋

During the WooSox opening season of 2021, if they have a home game (possibly would be the playoffs by then) on the opening game of Chesney's fourth year at Holy Cross, which game will draw the most fans?
I will put on my purple glasses and say Holy Cross. Polar Park will seat 10,000 and that's alot to keep selling out at the end of the season. It's not guaranteed that Chesney will turn around HC football, but he has done so everywhere else. I say HC 9100, WooSox 8950.
I know Triple A baseball ends before the Majors, but not sure how much sooner. Because this is a hypothetical, it's not critical for both teams to be actually scheduled at home on the same day in 2021 to make a prediction.

The Pawsox played their final game last year on September 3. It was at home. If they had made the playoffs, their season would have been extended. The first game of their season was on April 6th, also at home.

Let's say we compare 5-6 home football games at HC in Chesney's 4th year to the average WooSox attendance on Saturday/Sunday home games during the regular season.

With the fresh faced young promotional staff in the Athletic Department hopped up with enthusiasm by a charismatic new AD, and steady progress on the field (OK, with a new OC), we'll give them a run for their money. But I would have to pick the WooSox in their inaugrial season.

You are talking about a choice of tailgating at HC and getting treated like a criminal by the security team or going to Green Street for lunch and a beer, walking to Polar Park, and then having a couple post game beers. I’ll take Polar Park.

Hopefully whoever is running Holy Cross athletics in a year or so will be smart enough not to schedule a home game on Labor Day Weekend, Woo Sox or no Woo Sox. Only slightly less of an atrocity as having Winter Homecoming with no men's basketball game (I think that was Reagan, not Pine, may be wrong about that).

I’ll take Polar Park. Per the HC website, there are no home games currently scheduled during minor league baseball season. Earliest home game on slate is Sept 11 and that's in 2021. Obviously a little early to guess on IL play-offs. Also. next year MLB teams will not be able to pull up the full 40 man roster in Sept. Not sure what effect, if any, that will have on the end of the minor league season

The date of Winter Homecoming is determined by the Alumni Association board of directors, not the athletic department, or even the alumni office for that matter. Two or three times it has been on a women's game. Coach Gibbons had been complaining long and loud that the women never get to play on Homecoming, so at the request of the athletic department, the alumni agreed to try it. A few years back they did it again in conjunction with an anniversary (40th?) of admitting woman to the college. The whole weekend featured a lot of woman focused programming. You can blame Reagan for asking the alumni to try an experiment, but Homecoming is not an athletic department program.

If TPTB don't look at the athletic schedule when setting a date for winter homecoming, that is on them...and IMHO really DUMB.

Winter homecoming should have a basketball doubleheader at minimum. Cap it off with a hockey game at night.

They do look at the basketball schedule which is why there is usually a men's hoops game. This year marked the return of the double header for basketball, but there's a darn good chance no one knew that when they picked the date. I didn't realize it myself until I got an E-mail about it from athletics

The schedule is reviewed regarding football and basketball for homecoming and coordinated between the Alumni office and the AD. For fall Homecoming in 2019, it will be on October 19th, due to only one home game in September, being on September 7th against UNH. Then the team has a bye the following week, then away for 4 weeks. Playing the second home game on October 19th. The Alumni office is vigilant regarding the Homecoming dates. The optimum time is the last Saturday in September for football, and the first weekend in February for basketball. If the teams are home generally that is the date selected.
Complicating the scheduling for Winter Homecoming is the return of the students from Christmas break. Which means at least the third week of January. We are deep into the Patriot League schedule at that point, which means the men and women are in a asynchronous schedule for both teams. Which reduces our flexibility in finding another team. Trying to get the league and the other team to change the schedule is a problem.
Question, do you know of any other schools that schedule a fall and winter homecoming? Dartmouth has winter carnival, and UVM use to have cakewalk, but I am not aware of other schools that have one. HC is one of a few that has this tradition.
For those of us that do remember, the first Winter Homecoming was in 1976, after the Hart Center opened, with a basketball game on both Friday and Saturday night. On Friday we played Colgate, and Chris Potter had an outstanding game. On four success in bound attempts, he stole the ball and scored. On Saturday night HC played BC. During the day there were a plethora of activities including a men’s hockey game. The joint was jumping.

I remember when they were the AHA bottom feeder. Our fellow conference members are leaving us in the dust.
It's almost unspeakable how much of a Nothing-Burger the Minnesota win turned out to be for the program in the long run -- at least attendance is up because students no longer have any connection to the basketball program any more, with the exception of the nights the football team is forced to go so we don't embarrass ourselves on CBS Sports.

Let's hope the new AD can put up a graph in five years that looks like a capital V with 2018-19 being the bottom of the V. If it's a capital L with 2018-19 being the elbow at the bottom of the L, time for another national search.😗

Coach Lang has done an amazing job there. They were one of the worst teams in Division 1 a few years ago and they just beat the best team in the country in the NCAA Tourney. Impressive.
