I thought nothing was binding until a recruit signed a letter of intent in junior or senior year of high school and it was received by the college? Getting a commit from a child in elementary school is a bit off the chart in terms of reality...isn't it?

I was not able to read this article as it was behind a paywall, but I found this article instead. usatodayhss.com/2016/eighth-grade-lacrosse-stud-brennan-oneill-commits-to-penn-stateA few thoughts: 1. As lacrosse spreads, one would think that there are players outside the hotbed areas who are worthy of consideration which would obviate the need to look for eighth graders. 2. This kid is already six feet tall. Four years from now he may be a kid that I like to say "used to be tall." 3. I think that this New York State thing where middle schoolers can play on high school teams is idiotic. Why can't people just wait their turn? In my mind, there should also be some transfer penalty since he is going to a different high school than the one he plays for in eighth grade.
