Top assistant at Holy Cross from 1999-2003, headed the Wheaton program ever since. Had a good deal of success during her 16 years at the helm (winningest coach in program history), but team had struggled badly the last couple seasons.
By the way, she succeeded Cheryl Aaron (mentioned elsewhere on the board of late) as head coach there.

Most likely not. Wheaton is very liberal and they will certainly make the politically correct hire for that position if you know what I mean. I think one job to watch is Fitchburg State. The position is open and rumor is it will be fulltime. Interesting to see if he would apply. Fitchburg is D3 and a state job with security and allows him to keep coaching.

Smart move. Don't seek tips on how to navigate Rte. 190 from former Lt. Gov. Tim Murray and everything should work out well.🙂

Most of the D3 full time jobs carry other responsibilities*. I think he'd be more interested in a gig like Calhoun's.
*like coaching another sport, being assistant AD, that sort of thing.

Not sure if BG would go back to coaching Men's hoops but I know Paul Phillips retired at Clark this year, BG's alma mater. I don't know if Clark has named a new coach yet.

If you are a full time coach at a state college you are in the State system for health care, retirement etc...It is a good spot to coach if you aren't looking to move up...Many state school coaches stay a long time due to the good benefits!

IIRC, after two seasons as the head football coach, the late Mel Massucco resigned from the HC job to go to WPI. At the time I had been told that at WPI he had faculty status which provided more job security & benefits at the Div. 3(?) level. Evidently, he felt that at HC he had all the pressures of Div. 1 football, with no real job security and with questionable institutional support. Most of the guys thought it was a good move on his part. This is my recollection from 50+ years ago, so it may be flawed. He was a very good coach. Does anyone remember? LoveHC I remember Mel and your post triggered some thoughts. First he was a knowledgeable and amiable football analyst as a radio broadcast partner with Bob Fouracre after his tenure at WPI. When Gordie Lockbaum succeeded him as analyst I found him knowledgeable and amiable but also critical of bad play more than gentleman Mel. It was perhaps just a difference in style and technique but it was clear that Gordie was not afraid to point out HC deficits that should be corrected. As someone who played in the well coached Duffner era I thought Gordie reacted like someone who had heard the Beatles play at Symphony Hall and now had to sit through a Beatles tribute band concert in a high school auditorium. That is the reason why I think Gordie would shake up Holy Cross Athletics and not be afraid to demand excellence as an AD. Realities may limit results for any AD but I think Gordie would attack issues from both sides of the ball, so to speak. Second, Your recollection of Mel leaving HC for WPI and faculty status rings true because I remember reading an article about Neil Wheelwright's complaints after he was let go (I think he was let go) as Head Football Coach. Neil criticized many aspect of support for football at Holy Cross including facilities and produced stats that would make PP proud showing how Holy Cross Football had averaged four wins per season for decades, the same amount of wins he averaged while Head Coach at HC. In the Massucco and Wheelwright eras Holy Cross faced strong D-1 foes with apparently less than average institutional support so your recollection makes sense. How Dr. Eddie Anderson succeeded so well while also maintaining a medical practice, I don't know. Anyone old enough to remember?

Just in general D3 provides a bit more security. Plus at a place like Fitchburg State if you can stay competitive each year your job isn't on the line.

I remember back then and was one of those surprised by the apparent lack of support that Mel received as HCHC. Dr Anderson came back to HC because he found even less support at another college than he remembered at HC. It was not great back then for too many college head coaches.
