Getting to Know: 2021 6’8 AJ Hamrick (Westminster Catawba) by Patrick O'Brien | Apr 20, 2020 | Featured, News, Player Reports | 0 comments A player transitioning their game can always be interesting to watch in how they handle and present their game, as well as getting a chance to see them in a different light. AJ Hamrick, a 6’8 prospect from Westminster Catawba, is one of those prospects that is looking to transition their game to another position. Playing as a stretch four, Hamrick is looking to show that he can play the wing position. With his ability to stretch the floor and shoot the ball at all three levels, as well as his 7’0 wingspan, Hamrick brings a lot of factors that will have programs interested. When speaking to his coaches at Westminster Catawba, Hamrick is looking to continue to work on his game, developing his upper body and strength, as well as making plays off the dribble. But coming off a season in which he averaged nearly 10 points and six rebounds per game, Hamrick has been catching a few eyes with his continuing development such as Eastern Kentucky, Presbyterian, Winthrop, and Lincoln Memorial. The 6’8 wing is hoping to get back on the court soon to show his continuing to development and should be a target by several programs. Coaches Thoughts: “AJ is a high academic, long 6’8” wing with the ability to score anywhere on the court. Blessed with great athleticism, AJ can get to the rim with ease but also shoots the ball very well with unlimited range. AJ also loves the game and is always the first guy to arrive before practice to get extra work in and the last one to leave the gym after practice. A great teammate, AJ has also developed into a very effective shot-blocker and rim protector.” Junior Season Highlight: krossover.clipro.tv/Player/Player2.aspx?videoUserId=19489

Catching Up with SC 2021 PF AJ Hamrick
By Big Shots Nation, 05/13/20, 4:00PM EDT
Catching Up with SC 2021 PF AJ Hamrick
AJ Hamrick is one of the top stretch forwards in the SC 2021 class. The lengthy 3-4 combo can catch and shoot from both midrange and the perimeter. Hamrick plays great with a downhill driving guard that finds him on drop offs. AJ runs the floor well and plays hard with a high motor. Hamrick can protect the rim and use his length and athleticism to alter shots at the basket. The high academic Westminster Catawba Christian junior currently holds an offer from Army and has several other schools heavily interested. AJ has very high upside and will be a player that continues to develop.
We had a chance to catch up with AJ Hamrick and hear more about his recruitment, what he is looking for in a school, and his development as a player.
Question: How has the recruiting process been and which schools are showing you the most interest?
AJ Hamrick: “The recruiting process is picking up slowly, but I’m blessed to have any school want to commit four years into me.”
Question: What qualities are you looking for in your potential college coach and program?
Hamrick: “I’m looking for a coach/ school that will develop me into a better man for his community, better student in the classroom, and a better ball player on the court.”
Question: How would you describe your game on the court?
Hamrick: “I would describe my game on the court as raw, and passionate. I say that because I’ve only been taking basketball seriously for about 3 years now. I was never that kid that wanted to play in the NBA. I just wanted to play with my friends and family, Especially with both my parents being in the military I knew that I would move every 2-3 years from state to state. So I just wanted to use hoops as a way to make friends. Until my freshman year when I found a love for the game that would change my perspective from then on.”
Question: In what areas of your game would you like to improve as you prepare for the next level?
Hamrick: “The biggest areas I’ve been emphasizing during this downtime have been my lateral quickness, and my ability to take defenders off the dribble. Basically things I know I need to improve to show coaches that yeah I’m 6’9 but you’d just be wasting my talent by sticking me in the post.”
Question: Who is your favorite player to study and why?
Hamrick: “My favorite player in the NBA to study is Giannis Antetokounmpo. I have learned the most from his first couple years in the league when he had to show and prove to the front office that he can do anything there favorite guards can do and then some.”
Question: How has playing in Big Shots events helped your player development and recruitment?
Hamrick: “Playing in Big Shots tournaments is a huge advantage to anybody who strives to play at the next level. They give you the platform and opportunity to show coaches your ability and skill set.”
We look forward to keeping up with AJ and continuing to follow his progression as a very talented player in SC’s 2021 class.

I did not know that. Cool that you're making the publicity photos. In general when the camera guy is taking action shots, he's pretty good about getting an angle where I'm not in the background

"Mike loves basketball. He is obsessive about his workouts. He is tough-minded and competitive. He's an alert defender and a capable ballhandler. And he can flat-out shoot the basketball. He has an ultra-quick release and only needs a little daylight to get his shot off. What separates Mike from most other good shooters is his ability to shoot off screens and off the dribble. He also has no fear, and he has proven that he will take and make big shots. " - Brian Baudient, Canterbury School head coach and former D1 assistant
"Mike has a work ethic that's off the charts and being around a teammate like that is only encouraging. He knows what he's good at and tries to perfect his craft day in day out. As a teammate playing with Mike was fun, because besides being someone who does not miss too often, he listens and takes advice well and he does not take constructive criticism the wrong way. Playing with someone like that is a plus. It makes your relationship stronger." - Tray Alexander, former Canterbury teammate
Scouting Report
"Iuzzolino is a high-level shot-maker with a chip on his shoulder. That phrase may be a cliché, but it really embodies his approach to the game. He's got that outward and unapologetic confidence that is totally authentic and comes in direct correlation to his work ethic. His shooting numbers are off the charts. Being a 50/40/90 shooter is arguably the highest statistical accolade a shooter can earn at the higher levels, but it doesn't get talked about in high school because it's virtually unheard of. Well, Iuzzolino did it, and what that means is that he's a versatile shot-maker who is efficient at various spots on the floor. He makes threes at a steady clip but can also score inside the arc. In short, I think he's a clear D1 player and someone who helps you win at that level" - Adam Finkelstein, NERR & ESPN

Governor's Academy is Class B, gave us Joe Pridgen. St. Luke's (CT) was Class C when BU's Walter Whyte (2nd team All-PL) was there. Brooks is Class B, but always plays a highly competitive schedule, including some A and AA teams, and we would be very happy, I'm guessing, to get the 2021 Brooks kid (George Smith) we have offered.

Sean Durugordon got an offer from VCU yesterday. Our chances with him, Garrett Johnson, and Markus Ilver are also slim to none. Durugordon has picked up offers from Seton Hall and Georgia recently. As they say in the recruiting business, looks like he has “blown up.” He was a teammate of Iuzzolino’s this past season at Canterbury and will be transferring to one of the prep powerhouses, Putnam Science Academy, in the fall. I believe another HC recruit, Mohamed Sanogo, will be at PSA as well. I read recently that academics are very important to G. Johnson in his college choice so we have that going for us.

Garrett Johnson has gotten offers in the last two months from Yale, Penn, and Richmond (among others). With all due respect, HC doesn't compete well academically with any of those three schools.

Two points. 1) Although we have not been very successful in recent years due to the program having been in shambles for the better part of a decade, there have been a number of recruits who have chosen HC over HYP (one of them is an assistant on the staff). 2) Yale and Penn certainly are better academically, but don't think Richmond is exactly in a different conversation. They were #23 in the latest USN rankings, while HC was #27. I'll know that Nelson is recruiting at the level we need to be at when he wins some of these recruiting battles.
