The men's track team completed its season this weekend. Due to some sort of scheduling issue, the New England's and the IC4A's fell on the same weekend. They were held at Yale and Princeton respectively. They also conflicted with the Big East, ACC, and AAC championships so unfortunately, the fields were not as deep as they often are.
The big news of the weekend is that sophomore Gabe Piepergerdes won the IC4A title in the 400 hurdles with a time of 52.97 seconds. He is the first Crusader to win an IC4A title in 50 years. Michael Pichay finished third in the triple jump. Brandon Thornhill did not make the finals in the 110 hurdles.
At the New Englands, Pichay was the top finisher, finishing second in the triple jump breaking his own outdoor school record again with a jump of just over 49 feet and ninth in the long jump with a leap of 22'6". Brandon Thornhill finished 4th in the high hurdles.
Thornhill, a senior from Natick, has completed an outstanding collegiate career. Congrats to him and his other senior teammates. Track athletes compete for two full seasons each year with the distance guys competing the entire academic year.

I’m guessing that the Crusader who won an IC4A championship 50 yrs. ago was Art Dulong, a classmate of sader70, crusader1970, the erstwhile HC70 and yours truly. Art may have been the top athlete in his chosen sport in our class.

I’m guessing that the Crusader who won an IC4A championship 50 yrs. ago was Art Dulong, a classmate of sader70, crusader1970, the erstwhile HC70 and yours truly. Art may have been the top athlete in his chosen sport in our class. It is amazing how he dominates the men's indoor and outdoor distance records at HC to this day. One bit of trivia I discovered, when he ran his 4:04.5 outdoor mile as a high schooler it was the national high school record at the time. He holds the outdoor mile record (among many others) at HC at 4:04.1... he was even better at the longer races at HC. It is fair to say he was at HC during their glory days of track and field (1960's).

He was a pleasure to watch when he ran. He had both physical strength and strength of will. He could push himself even when it appeared he had nothing else left.

It is fair to say he was at HC during their glory days of track and field (1960's). Jim Ryun ran 3:55.3 as a senior in high school in 1965. (He also ran 3:39 in the 1500 as a junior.) I wondered if he had run that fast against high school only competition and found this but you are right, Dulong was an amazing runner. EDIT: Pride--I saw the article I suspect you saw that says that Dulong ran the fastest high school time in the country until it was broken a few weeks later. I am wondering if that was the fastest time that year and the writer misunderstood or simply wrote unclearly. The article said he ran his 4:04 "shortly before graduation" which would seemingly place it in 1966--between Ryun and Marty Liquori (Essex Catholic NJ '67/Villanova)

Futher on the subject of Art Dulong, from a track and field website discussion of great XC performances at Van Cortland Park in NY:
November 20, 1967 IC4A: Dulong Demolishes Field
Art Dulong runs the fastest time ever 24:04.4 at Van Cortlandt Park. The Holy Cross sophomore bettered Charlie Messenger’s mark of 24:15.6. Amby Burfoot of Wesleyan won the college division race in 24:25.4, and Villanova’s Marty Liquori won the university division freshman race in 14:20.8.
1967 IC4A Cross Country Championship 1 Art Dulong Holy Cross 24:04.4 2 Steve Stageberg Georgetown NA 3 Tom Donnelly Villanova 24:52 4 Terry Donnelly William & Mary 25:00 5 Ray Smith Penn State 25:04
and
November 24, 1969
Gerry Lindgren, Mike Ryan, and Steve Prefontane battle at VCP
On this date 48 years ago, the names Gerry Lindgren and Steve Prefontane were added to the list of great runners toeing the starting line at this famous cross-country course. Most of the great runners did run this course at some point. One exception is Craig Virgin.
1969 NCAA Cross Country Championship
1 Gerry Lindgren Wash St 28:59.2
2 Mike Ryan Air Force 29:01
3 Steve Prefontane Oregon 29:12
4 John Bednarski El Paso 29:17
5 Art Dulong Holy Cross 29:27
Lindgren and Prefontaine were two of the greatest American distance runners of all time

Sounds right. Ryun's 3:58.3 v high schoolers in 1965 was definitely superior to Dulong's 4:04.5 outdoor mile as a high schooler the following year - the author must have meant nationally for the 1966 season only (although bettered shortly thereafter during the season).
One source notes Ryun's best actual mile time as a high school junior (v high schoolers) was 4:06.4 in his state meet in 1964 and that was the national high school miler record at the time. (Puts Dulong's high school mark of 4:04.5 two years later in perspective.)
Dulong definitely excelled at even longer distances while at HC (not that his HC indoor and outdoor mile records are shabby)

No qualifiers for the Nationals? Brown had 10 qualifiers for the East Regional.... Some Patriot League teams had a lot more than 10 qualifiers for the Regional. Btw, Gabe Piepergerdes missed qualifying by 0.24 seconds in the 400H. Pichay missed by 0.26 meters ( about 10 inches) ) in theTJ.
