36th Round. Chicago White Sox. A fine Holy Cross student and athlete. He really developed nicely straight out of Regis and is a credit to Coach DiCenzo. Best wishes to him.

Very few grads of Regis become pro athletes. Doctors, lawyers, scientists, professors—one of the top high schools in the US. Very difficult to get into. Dr. Anthony Fauci is an alum.

Another bit of Regis trivia: Although they don't have a baseball field anywhere near the Manhattan school (practice fields are via subway to the Bronx), there were two Regis alums pitching on the HC team this year. Cronin and freshman Matt Clarkin.

5 Cronins have played major league baseball with Joe, of course, most prominent and a HOFer. No Declan is included among the nearly 20,000 men who have played MLB--maybe our guy can be the first.
I don't believe Regis has produced any major league players to date

Chris Bates '10, a LHP, was drafted 10th round by the Brewers and offered 150K. Turned down $$$ to attend college and went to Richmond. Two Tommy John surgeries later, he never wound up getting re-drafted or even pitching an inning of professional baseball. Best of luck to Declan who also led Regis to two state runner-ups in basketball.

Two Tommy John surgeries later, he never wound up getting re-drafted or even pitching an inning of professional baseball. Best of luck to Declan who also led Regis to two state runner-ups in basketball. While Regis hasn't had anyone make it into professional baseball pre-Cronin, the school has produced at least a dozen DI guys since 2000. Guys have gone on to play at the following schools: HC Fairfield Albany Northeastern Lafayette St Joe's Richmond Harvard Cornell Georgetown Definitely a couple more, that's just off the top and not including numerous DIII guys.

Do we know that Declan is going to sign ? With his academic achievements and knowing that the pay is low and the bus rides long at the entry level of pro baseball, he'd certainly have to think about starting another career or grad school.

I have absolutely no inside info, but I do know that well over 95% of seniors who have used up their eligibility sign. The biggest issue for some is that they may never get an offer from the MLB team that drafted them. Sometimes late-round college draftees are viewed as insurance policies to allow the team to fill its roster if some of the higher picks don't sign. Every year there are some drafted seniors who don't get a contract offer.

There is a sports talk show host in Boston, Dale Arnold who has been there forever. One day he mentioned that he had a chance to sign a low level minor league contract out of college and also had the chance to sign on as an entry level minor league hockey announcer. He was advised he most likely did not have the skills to get to MLB so he took the announcing gig and bounced around the minors in different sports as an announcer for a while. I thought at the time he might have had a touch more credibility during his decades long sports broadcasting and hosting career if he had been a former professional athlete, even for a year before announcing. I think even if you are a minor league player for even a short while it can only be a positive in any other career endeavor.

The word from a on campus/close to the team source is that Delcan will head to Arizona this summer. His roommate will be headed to Wake Forest... to complete the arm for an arm trade.

He did pile on the academic accolades (on top of some pitching awards). Just scroll down to see them: twitter.com/HCrossBaseballSeems like he'll do both (give the game a shot and then head to grad school/career). Only question is how long before the grad school/career - could be six months, could be 16 years.

Of course he should sign and give it a shot:
Potential Employer: "Declan, I see there's a gap between when you graduated and now, care to explain?"
Declan: "Well sir, after playing baseball for HC for 4 year, I was drafted by the Chi Sox. I felt I owed it to myself, family, coaches and former teammates to give the MLB a shot."
Potential Employer: "When can you start, Declan?"

I think this is a promotion of sorts for Declan as the HC baseball twitter says he's been moved to the Kannapolis (N.C.) Intimidators, the White Sox Class A affiliate.
