Looked at the team's page today and Declan has been fairly busy - 9 relief appearances since June 19th, with 14 innings pitched - one very rough outing but otherwise quite good - era is at 6.75

After last year's complete Covid washout for the entire minor leagues, Declan is playing this year and was promoted to the White Sox High A (A+) Winston Salem Dash to start the season. Playing pretty regularly in relief. Because he was young at Holy Cross he is just 23. Always thought he was one kid with real potential on that nice HC squad. www.milb.com/player/declan-cronin-686539

Declan Cronin - his youtube video on how he increased the velocity of his pitches at HC and beyond - very impressive / articulate young man - believe he's still in A ball in the Carolina's league

Great news! Declan was just promoted to the AAA Charlotte Knights. www.milb.com/charlotte-knights/transactionsWhich means, among other things, he’ll be in Worcester for a six game series v the Worcester Red Sox starting tomorrow. [ Perhaps a few Crusaders /supporters will get to check him out at Polar Park.

Is this the furthest an HC grad has progressed in pro ball since RP, Jr. when he played for the Toledo Mudhens in the early 80's ?

There are plenty of very successful major league relievers who bounced around and took a while to make the show before having a pretty good run. I am sure a certain HC grad who is the best pitching coach in the MLB would be able to work wonders for him.

From a pre spring training write up at www.southsidesox.com/2021/12/16/22836982/chicago-white-sox-deep-dive-birmingham-right-handed-relieversDeclan Cronin6´4´´225 poundsAge: 24Cronin, as a senior pitcher for Regis H.S. (New York City), produced a 2.13 ERA and 61 strikeouts and 41 strikeouts. The year before, he helped his team win the state baseball championship. Opting to cross state lines to play college ball for the College of the Holy Cross University (Worcester, Mass.), he produced decent but unspectacular numbers. During his senior year for the Crusaders, he produced a 4.06 ERA and 1.54 WHIP as a starting pitcher. Believing that he profiled better as a reliever, the White Sox selected him in the 36th round of the 2019 MLB draft. That year, he combined with the AZL White Sox and Kannapolis for an outstanding 2.88 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 20 relief appearances. In 34 1⁄3 innings, he relinquished just 25 hits (.208 OBA) and 11 walks (8.1%) while striking out 29 (21.5%).After the pandemic layoff, Cronin in 2021 struggled with Winston-Salem in 38 innings with a 5.08 ERA and 1.33 WHIP, as he allowed 33 hits (.226 OBA) and 19 walks (11.3%) while striking out 37 (22.0%). However, after receiving a late-season promotion to Birmingham, he produced better results in a smaller sample size. In seven outings totaling 8 1⁄3 innings, he produced a 2.16 ERA and 1.20 WHIP by relinquishing just seven hits (.226 OBA) and three walks (8.3%) while fanning six (16.7%).While producing lackluster strikeout numbers even during his collegiate career, Cronin has survived by keeping the ball down. In fact, nearly two-thirds of all balls hit off of him this year were grounders. Because he doesn’t possess high-octane stuff, he’ll have to do more of the little things to stifle hitters: Keeping the ball down, staying ahead of hitters, change speeds, alter the hitters eye-levels both vertically and horizontally. Also, Cronin will need to stifle lefties a bit better by developing pitches that drift away them — perhaps continued work on a cutter or changeup would help.Cronin will likely return to Birmingham, with a possibility for a late-season call-up to Charlotte if his command and control are both in top form. Here is the link to his Baseball Reference page. www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=cronin000dec&type=pgl&year=2022Opposing hitters' line is .246/.324/.339/.663 with a 1.394 WHIP. He has given up 2 HRs in 145 plate appearances. Plenty of guys have succeeded by getting batters to hit ground balls. Here's hoping he keeps getting better and gets a shot.

One inning specialist = closer = big bucks. He's not being used in save situations, and doesn't have big strikeout numbers. Ceiling is probably as a set-up guy

The Mike Timlin role. If he had been brought in to relieve Pedro against the Yankees in the 2003 playoffs it might have been an 83 year curse instead of 84.

Declan was called up to AAA the end of June so I guess he is exceeding the author’s expectations. Also, given the trends in pro current baseball (with starters going fewer and fewer innings) there is a premium on relievers. In a recent podcast Declan revealed why a kid with his sort of potential wound up in the Patriot League and at Holy Cross: m.soundcloud.com/hc-sid/s3e13-catch-up-with-declan-cronin

I expect that they will redefine “quality start” soon to require only 5 innings.

Since this first game in AAA before a “home town” crowd, Declan has pitched 5 scoreless innings in 5 games with no walks. Hopefully, he’ll continue on that pace and be called up if a Chisox reliever goes on the IL or when the rosters expand in September.

How much do the rosters expand to now in September? Its not 40 anymore I dont think. nycrusader2010 You are correct. September roster expansion has been limited in the last several years. I think the number is 28. While it may be unlikely that Declan Cronin will be one of the added players, there is probably a slim chance because most roster additions in September, particularly for teams still in the playoff chase, will be relief pitchers in a year where there has been shortened spring training and fewer average innings pitched for starters.
