Leading 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th, Cronin entered the game with the bases loaded and no one out. He threw five pitches to get three outs, picking up the save.

In the bottom of the ninth with the Knights ahead by a score of 3-1, Charlotte reliever Parker Markel came on to start the inning, but he had his troubles. He allowed back-to-back walks to start the inning and then gave up back-to-back singles. With no outs and one run already in, the Knights called on reliever Declan Cronin to get the team out of a bases-loaded jam. Cronin did just that as he was able to retire all three batters he faced to end the game and notch his first career Triple-A save.

This gets me amped up. Is it possible that not one but two individuals who graduated both Regis High School and Holy Cross might be throwing balls off a major league mound this year?

Declan has had 13 scoreless outings in 15 AAA appearances, 2 holds and the recent save. His overall ERA, WHIP and opponents’ batting average at AAA are 3.21, 1.29 and .273 but, if the two bad outings (6 hits, 3 walks and 5 earned runs in 1 and 1/3 innings) are excluded, his numbers are 0.00, 0.71 and .237 with 0 walks. Basically, he’s done his job and done it well in 86% of his AAA outings. Hopefully, he continues to perform well and advances to the major league club in the next few years.
BTW, Dr. Fauci threw out another first pitch in Seattle recently and, while it was not a strike, it was a much better pitch than his first attempt.

www.mlb.com/prospects/whitesox/Not surprisingly, the undrafted Cronin is not listed amongst Top 30 CWS prospects. I do find it a little odd that there are a couple of 26-year old and even a 27-year old on this list (Anderson Severino, Luis' brother). Once you hit 25, you're typically no longer considered a "prospect".

John Lindsey spent sixteen years in the minor leagues before making his MLB debut with the Dodgers in September, 2010. His MLB career ended in October, 2010 with an .083 career batting average.
The Red Sox had a situation years ago with a career minor leaguer whose season had ended and was on a fishing boat off shore when through a series of freak injuries he was called up. Can't remember his name.

The classic late bloomer was Hoyt Wilhelm who did not make the majors until he was 29 and then went on to a long Hall of Fame career

Undrafted out of Regis HS, but drafted 36 Round out of Holy Cross.

Knuckleballers tend to last longer Right you are--see below--my point was more along the line of a reliever who did not make it to "the show" until his late 20's Age in last MLB season--some knuckleballers 49= Hoyt Wilhelm 48= Phil Niekro (I went to hos last game, also the first game for my infant daughter) 46= Charlie Hough 44=Tim Wakefield 43= Joe Niekro' 36= Wilbur Wood

Not a knuckle baller and made his debut at the ripe age of 23 years old. However, craft left-hander Jamie Moyer is another example of a late bloomer. He entered his age-30 season with just 34 wins and finished his career with 269 wins -- at age 49. He had an astounding 11 double-digit win seasons AFTER he turned 35.

Cronin pitched the 5th inning of a bullpen game (8 Charlotte pitchers threw one inning each). They were down 1-0 entering the 5th and 2-0 after it. Cronin gave up a solo home run in his one inning. Also had a strikeout. No walks.

Another hold tonite (#3) for Declan as he pitched a shutout inning vs. Lehigh Valley. Only runs he’s given up after his AAA debut game in Worcester are to LV.

For those of you with access to the MLB Network, tomorrow night’s game between the Syracuse Mets and the Charlotte Knights is on at 7 pm EDT. In addition to the possible chance to see HC alum Declan Cronin in action, you’ll have a chance to see several experimental rules being employed (pitch timer-14 seconds with bases empty/18 seconds with a runner on base; larger bases-18” square vs. 15” square; automated ball-strike “ABS” challenge system [apparently each team receives three appeals to the home plate umpire’s call]).

Declan has had the last two nights off and they’ve been heavy bullpen games so there’s a pretty good shot he’ll pitch tomorrow.

Very interesting to watch the new rules (explained pretty well during the Pre game) and it moves along. PLENTY of major league talent out there.

Declan went groundout, strikeout, strikeout and looked terrific. Striking out Travis Jankowski (a major leaguer for most of this year) to end the inning was particularly impressive.
