Just noticed that former Navy great Noah Song is in camp with the Phillies after they selected him from the Red Sox in the Rule 5 draft. Due to his naval service requirements, he has not pitched competitively since 2019.

Wonder if our Regis grad knows of any previous MLB Regis grad ? Cronin would be the first to appear in an MLB game if he makes it. Regis has only had one player ever drafted by MLB -- Chris Bates Regis '10. He was drafted in the 15th Round and offered 100K signing bonus. Turned it down to play college ball at Richmond. 2 Tommy John surgeries later, he never pitched a professional inning.

Given the fact they have no athletic fields, I’m pretty impressed they’ve had two baseball players drafted. Of course, as I’ve had grads tell me, they haven’t lost a football game either.

Very few high schools in Manhattan, and in much of NYC besides Staten Island and Eastern Queens, have their own athletic fields. Regis baseball practices on Randall's Island and plays some home games there as well as Central Park North Meadow. When I was in school, we had just moved up to the top division in baseball and our geographical group that we played twice each included Xavier, La Salle, Cardinal Hayes and St. Raymond. Only one in this group with its own field was St. Rays' Raven Field. So when it was our turn to play St. Ray's at "home", we'd play there and just bat in the bottom half. Hayes' would host at the fields by Yankee Stadium or sometimes Clemente State Park. Regis did have a football team pre-WWII for a few years. There was however an "Undefeated Since 1942 (or whatever year)" football T shirt floating around at one point.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Following today’s spring training game against Arizona, the Chicago White Sox made the following eight roster moves: • Optioned RHPs A.J. Alexy and Frank German to Class AAA Charlotte; • Reassigned RHPs Declan Cronin, Lane Ramsey and Jesse Scholtens, C Adam Hackenberg, INF Moisés Castillo and OF Víctor Reyes to minor-league camp. With the moves, the White Sox have 42 players remaining in camp: 21 pitchers, three catchers, 11 infielders and seven outfielders. www.mlb.com/press-release/press-release-white-sox-roster-moves-march-20-2023

This would appear to be a setback for Declan - did he appear in any games this spring ?

Would not consider it a setback as the White Sox pen's payroll will be upwards of $43,000,000 this year--there are zero open spots. It appears he was one of the final NRI re-assigned to MiLB camp. I would imagine he impressed and is a real option for their bullpen if he stays healthy and pitches well in AAA this year.
Looks like he appeared in a number of games. Small sample size, but the numbers weren't great. He wouldn't have made it this far if they didn't like what they saw, though.

Googled minor league camp and still not sure what it is, but I think it’s better than being reassigned to a team. I think it’s for prospects to get more individual instruction rather than put into a team to figure things out on their own.

Every MLB organization runs two Spring Trainings: Major League camp and Minor League camp. Major League camp is for all 40-man players and any Non-Roster Invites (usually top prospects or recently signed Free Agents that are signed to Minor League deals with a chance to make the roster out of ST). Minor League camp is for everyone else (the 120+ minor leaguers with each org). Major League camp usually starts with upwards of 60 players, but they need to set a 26-man roster for Opening Day. When 40-man players are sent down, the team must use an option and usually options them directly to Triple-A (note that the first bullet of the above post mentioned those two RHPs being optioned to AAA). For all Non-Roster players, they are simply reassigned to Minor League camp at large when cut from Major League camp. Before Minor League Spring Training breaks, each MLB organization will have to set MiLB opening day rosters as well, but until then, all players are classified as being in Minor League camp. The only players on a Minor League roster at this point are those 40-man players that have been optioned down out of Major League camp. So in Declan's case, because he is not on the 40-man roster, he is simply reassigned to Minor League camp. From there he is likely practicing with the Triple-A team every day now in anticipation with breaking camp with that affiliate. Tl;dr: "Optioned to AAA" means the player is on the 40-man; "reassigned to Minor League camp" means they are not 40-man players. For all the players sent down from Big League camp in either manner, there is no practical difference. All head over to Minor League camp (usually a simple matter of just switching clubhouses at the team's spring training complex). Hope that clears up some confusion. Edit: including this link on minor league options may also shed some light on the difference.

Not a great start to the season.
5.65 ERA and a 2.09 WHIP in 13 appearances (14 1/3 IP).
Relievers can't be walking guys, and Cronin has issued 11 walks.

Has begun to pitch much more effectively.
For the season a 3.42 ERA, but a bad 1.56 WHIP. Too many walks -- 14 in 23 2/3 innings.
Over his last eight appearances, though: 9 1/3 innings, 4 hits, 3 walks, and 0 ER.

If Cronin is able to work his way up to the big club, HC will have had at least one alum play in a regular season game in all of the four major sports since 2011.

Declan Cronin in a recent outing (June 3) and thought folks might want to see the AAA ball/strike challenge in action. "Each team gets three challenges and retains a correct challenge. Challenges can only be initiated by the pitcher, hitter or catcher and must be made immediately after an umpire's call." (There are some games each AAA series where all balls/strikes are make by the robo-ump...in that case the umpire simply verbalizes the robo-ump call.) Maybe we'll see some version (either challenge or full robo-ump or something along those lines) of that in the majors.

Two scoreless innings last night (one K, no walks, no hits). Lowers his ERA to 3.16 for the season.

Opponent batting average since (and including) 5/9/23 outing is .105 with no earned runs and no extra base hits. WHIP during that time is 0.61
He's gotten it done for a full 30 days in a row.
