Are we offering scholarships to high school freshmen?

Are we offering scholarships to high school freshmen? Certainly HC is offering them to players who just completed their freshman year.at a minimum. Some schools have actually gotten commitments from players just starting their freshman year, believe it or not. This has become a huge problem for lacrosse, with players feeling they have to commit by the end of sophomore year or there may be no scholarships (or Ivy spots) left at the better programs. Unfortunately this means that a number of the players either commit to a program and then don't develop enough to be able to play at that level - or else they commit to a mid-tier program and then break out and renege on the commitment to jump to a big-time program. Both the men's and women's lax coaching associations have pushed for new legislation that hopefully will be passed by the NCAA during the next year to curb recruiting before the start of players' junior years. This would be a major positive for everyone. As noted in a recent NCAA release, "The NCAA DI Council recommended the early recruiting proposal for the 2016-17 NCAA legislative cycle. This proposal seeks to push all recruiting contact with prospective student-athletes (“PSAs”) back to September 1st junior year. All recruiting contact includes incoming and outgoing telephone calls, unofficial visits and correspondence between coaches, PSAs and their families. Camps and instructional clinics are still allowed under this proposal, following the current DI recruiting calendar." www.iwlca.org/news_article/show/669704?referrer_id=2508977

Kelly is a player with tremendous potential and he will be a very strong addition for HC. Having said that, commitments from frosh are still so far in advance of actual attendance that many things can still happen...not all of them good. It is a risk with a big upside.

Breezy noted that Jack-Henry Vara de-committed from HC and will be going to Princeton. That hurts as he is a very good face-off guy and that is an extremely important position (one where we have under-performed lately). In this age of early recruiting I think we will see more de-commits as time goes on.

I agree (and that may be why HC is continuing to recruit until the player signs on the official LOI). Sad that with a chance to go to HC, Jack-Henry had to "settle" for Princeton.

Sorry for the confusion. I had included a Twitter post about the de-commitment. It showed up when it was posted, but for some reason it no longer can be seen.
