Eaton led for the first lap in his heat (I think they put the top point holders in this heat, not the fastest 1500 runners) of the 1500 but then yielded to the Algerian runner who took it on the lead the rest of the way. I followed on the computer, not on TV, but my guess would be that Eaton just likely kept pace with Mayer knowing that he only had to stay within the 6-7 seconds--maybe 50 meters--to win the Gold.
Here's how one news service reported it:
"World champion Eaton finished with 8893 points, incredibly matching exactly the Olympic record after 10 lung-busting events. He finished third in the final event, the 1,500 meters, to win gold from France's Kevin Mayer on 8,834 points. Canada's Damian Warner took the bronze."

Ran well enough= he won the 1500 I believe he finished in third place. He beat his main competitor and tied the Olympic record, but did not "win" this 10th part of the decathlon.

Italy vs USA today in volleyball. With the sets (games) tied at 1-1, the US has huge lead in 3rd set. Italy clears the bench to rest the starters. I'm wondering why the US doesn't do the same. Instead the announcers saying essentially the US players have to keep playing hard so they don't lose momentum. So they continue to play hard while Italy rests and US wins the 3rd set to go up 2-1. Italy won sets 4 and 5 for the gold. No comments from the announcers but I thought the US coach blew it

I watched a lot of it. I didn't see any of the problems talked about. On the contrary, the venues looked excellent. The colors were spectacular. The closing ceremony was exceptional. Lots of commercials, but I guess NBC, after paying tons of $ for the rights, had the right to make it back from advertisers.

Lots of commercials, but I guess NBC, after paying tons of $ for the rights, had the right to make it back from advertisers. They almost never talk about any problems (with the obvious exception of Munich). The coverage was better than previous years IMHO. I did like the fact that veery medal was celebrated (not only gold). Well, in two years we get the winter games.
