I should send a note to Tracy Barlok suggesting that 'naming rights' to 'The Pit' be promoted as a potential class gift. Four drive-ins still operating in MA.* Would think they did quite well during COVID. * Date of the article in link below is unclear. www.driveinmovie.com/MA.htmI'm not sure of the others but the Mendon Drive-In in Worcester County is a great one. I think it's morphed into more of a family friendly place rather than the passion pit of the past.

The PPAC is both massive change and enormous progress.

Prior will be unique is so many aspects to arts education. I have been waiting to see a dedicated performing arts center built for over 50 years. Very happy to see we are now close to completion within the next year.
A dedicated outdoor video amphitheater .... Wonder how many colleges have a similar venue.

Reminds me of the old saying: “Not all change is progress.” To clarify -- my comment above -- made entirely in jest -- was directed at the post regarding drive-in movies, not the new Performing Arts Center (which, I agree, is both change and progress).

I wonder if that feature was added before or after the pandemic. It is a very timely resource as there is no guarantee there won't be other circumstances that value gathering outdoors over indoors.

I wonder if that feature was added before or after the pandemic. It is a very timely resource as there is no guarantee there won't be other circumstances that value gathering outdoors over indoors. The amphitheater was in the original design, or the first iteration thereof. I think it was envisioned as a performance space, e.g., Greek plays, local acoustic band, DJ, etc., and this is probably still the case.. IIRC, movie screenings was also mentioned. It seems that in late Spring, either the architect, the college, or the contractor decided to test how well the facade functioned as a movie screen. And apparently, all were pleasantly surprised by the quality. This apparently led to several change orders to better facilitate movie screenings and I presume screening of other live events / games The design changes might be items such as running conduit for cable and power to the digital projector which would be set in the middle or rear of the amphitheater. If one looks at the Hogan lot webcam, one can see the contractor has removed a panel from the west side of the concert hall. This is possibly related to the aforementioned design changes. However, if a panel was similarly removed from the east side, then these are likely emergency exits. The college has also decided to retain the Brooks Recital Hall, and The [other] Pit, which is experimental theater space in the basement of O'Kane. Very clearly, The [other] Pit MUST be renamed. The Seelos theater (in Kimball under) can also be used for performances. The PCPA will result in the closing of Fenwick theater, but that is the only performance facility used by the performing arts departments that will be closed. The costume shop, dance studios in O'Kane will be moved to PCPA. I believe the digital media lab in Millard, part of the Visual Arts Department, is moved to the PCPA.

Many years ago I wrote a letter to Fr. Brooks explaining the need for a performing arts center at HC. I did receive a very positive personal response from Father. At that time, there was very little interest publicly expressed. Some thought it was a frivolous luxury unrelated to the mission of a high academic LAC. Maybe, my little letter along with many others helped in a small way to start the ball rolling or move the ball along. I am gratified beyond words. My hope is that one day I will be able to visit this marvelous facility.

I remember seeing a Performing Arts Building / Concert Hall mentioned in the 1967-1968 college view book that was part of the admissions package sent to HC applicants. I am sure that what was envisioned back then, is substantially different from the building now under construction. I will have to contact the HC archivist to find the view book. I also found this notation from the Holy Cross 1966-1968 Catalog referenced on page 28. crossworks.holycross.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?referer=https://www.google.com/&httpsredir=1&article=1093&context=course_catalog“Plans for the future include a substantial expansion of Dinand Library and its facilities to support the new emphasis on faculty-student research and special studies programs; modernization of the interior of Fenwick Hall for administrative offices; the renovation of three student residences—Alumni, Beaven, and Carlin; a Mathematics Center; establishment of a full-blown Fine Arts Program, in its own building, for the the benefit of both the student body and the cultural interest of Worcester; and, in the long-range program, a modern and adequate Field House”. It indeed has been in the plans for 50 years. Hope to be able to attend a performance during opening week in 2022.

I was ahead of my time, instead of a DeLoren for travel, I brought it back from one of my adventures in The Time Tunnel. 🤣 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Time_Tunnel

As impressive as that tour is, you can be certain that it pales in comparison to a video tour after the building is completed and even more so, of course, to seeing it live. I recall that some posters were lukewarm on the project when it was announced but I see this as a huge plus for HC

I learned a lot, including the fact that we offer Dance classes, and that they are very popular with pre-med students and others.

I recall that some posters were lukewarm on the project when it was announced but I see this as a huge plus for HC I wasn't jumping over barrels on ice skates like they used to do on ABC's Wide World of Sports when I first heard the idea and location, fearing overcrowding with all the new construction, but I love it now.

Just noticed there are several crew members working on the Center tonight after 8:00 PM EST. They have a spotlight on the northwest section of the building. Fun watching the “Late Show”.

It’s 10:43, and the crane is in operation with at least three construction crew members are working under the lights. Any idea why the late night show?
