PP: What's your assessment of what is taking place in the NW corner of the PPAC? I have no good ideas. The wall looks to be a retaining wall. The row(s) of low posts may be a base for future seating, or lighting. I think the entrance at this corner is the principal entrance for students (the wooden door is temporary). --------------- The envelope for the Villanova Performing Arts Center is klunky, misshapen, with a let-me-try-and-hide street presence, and tucked next to a new and very large parking garage. Terrible design and site choice, but I think Villanova is now land-poor, unless they grab Rosemont..

I drove up there during the summer. The design is nice and the rust color is unusual. I don't recall being bowled over by the size of the building. I think it will blend in when all of the landscaping, road and parking lot configuration is finished.
One issue would be an evening with a hockey or basketball game at the Hart (heaven forbid two at once), a banquet in the Hogan Ballroom and a performance in the PPAC. There would have to be shuttle busses from the parking garage and lots on the lower campus with any type of turnout for the multiple events. Nothing wrong with that.

I don't see how the PPAC is going to blend in at all. Maybe that was the desired effect.

I don't see how the PPAC is going to blend in at all. Maybe that was the desired effect. If the finished product doesn't blend in, I hope it's on purpose. At the risk of losing a few parking spaces, I would enjoy the landscape architect designing a tree lined lane leading up to the Luth similar to Linden Lane leading into the lower campus. That may not be practical as parking is at a premium.

And does anyone know second hand (you know, from children or grandchildren) how "The Jo" is being received and used by the students? I'd think the upperclassmen would be especially appreciative having started with the old Fieldhouse and then essentially nothing while the latter was torn down and the former was being built.

I can report that my senior daughter is delighted with the "Jo". She goes there nearly every morning at 7am. She reports the equipment is top notch and the facility is "gorgeous". It is being well utilized by students. They have fire pits set up in front every evening that are quite popular for gathering. Thank you Luth family.

Has everyone seen the video tour of the inside? The professor did a great job in showcasing the place Thanks for pointing this out. I had not seen the video. Clearly, the goal is to make this one of the places on campus in which kids gather (intentionally or by chance.) I was worried that it did not include a coffee bar and pleased when the professor pointed that out at the end. EDIT: Thinking more about the coffee bar, it occurs to me between the atrium/beehive and the coffee bar (with all of the silly varities of hot drinks for people who aren't content to simply enjoy black coffee like me) this will be the closest such location for a vast majority of students on campus--closer even than Hogan. This alone ought to make the building a gathering place. My wife was on a high school building committee 20 years ago. The architect convinced them to put the cafeteria in a high ceiling atrium visible when you walk in the front door and near the auditorium, library and gym. He was right--it is a gathering space for the kids all day and for all of the people who come to the building in the evening.

The building is big, and looks even bigger when viewed from the Hart Center. Suspect landscaping and filling in the dirt construction zone will help that.
The rust colored panels, to me anyway, give the appearance of a dark stained wood when viewed from a just a little distance - like the Hogan 3 entrance.
It is not the neoclassical lower campus construction and I would perhaps have liked to see some brick on the building - likely in place of the metal panels especially if that change would have cut the cost of the place a few thousands of dollars or 10.
And while not exactly the external design nor location I would have picked, I very much like the look of it, and Hogan as you drive into campus from College Street and pass the Jo. I think it provides an impressive centerpiece as you enter the upper campus rather than a whole lot of parking that separated you from any buildings and real signs of campus life that was there before.

Let me use one of the profound statements that they use in Rhode Island:
"It is what it is."

I would like to see the other two web cam locations activated to see the parking lot with a perspective of the Luth Center, as well as the “Jo”. They provide a view of the vibrancy of the campus.
Watching the Linden Lane and Hoval cameras shows the unique landscaping gem, that is Mt.St.James.
Does anyone have an update regarding if or when these two locations will once again be functioning?

Geez, Crucis, when I say "I know a guy" (at Holy Cross), that's YOU!!!
I would like to see a webcam showing the quad - as I've posted before - but who knows what the actual purpose of these webcams are? Think Phreek thought it was all about the construction which made sense when they showed The Jo and the PPAC but the Hoval and O'Kane traffic circle don't qualify.

The first construction webcam was Joyce. Then they installed a webcam on Figge for Luth. Then on Hogan for The Jo. I think the Hoval and Dinand cams arrived about the time of Joyce. A difficulty with a quadcam is getting a camera high enough to view most of the quad, as trees block generally block the view, and the roof of Kimball is rather low.

Roof of Alumni or Carlin or Fenwick. Wasn’t thinking of Kimball.

While my daughter was attending Law School at Santa Clara in 2007, before there was an IPhone FaceTime App, Santa Clara had a live streaming Web Cam. Often she would call to tell me to go to the web site for the web cam so that she could wave to me as she walked through the location.

When my daughter was a freshman at Holy Cross in the fall of 2000, there was a construction web cam that also showed her wing of her dorm, including her window. It was fun for me to call and tell her to turn the light off and go to bed!

The faculty and staff who will have courses / activities in the PCPA are supposed to get an inside tour this coming week, or the week thereafter. This tour may be more related to move-in than simply a familiarization, as those who are moving to the PCPA need to indicate where furniture / accoutrements / etc. are to be placed.

Some may have thought I was humoring President Bok (an avatar) in my prediction of a new costume shop in the PCPA that would be of unrivaled size. Listen to this guy, and I will posit he deserves such a costume shop.

Great video- I had no idea that our theatre offerings were substantial enough that we could afford a dedicated costume designer. I can just imagine how excited this man must be about the new PPAC
