Replying to a comment that a good coach is a good coach is a good coach, I said that Doggie Julian came as a football coach and worked out OK in basketball
Rather than take a thread about coaching candidates too far down a tangent, I got this from the movie Purple Reign
George Kaftan: "Doggie came up there as a football quarterback coach and they threw him the basketball job"
Bob Cousy: "And they said 'Don't you have a basketball background?' and Doggie says 'Ya, I coached a little high school, small college' 'We'll give you 500 bucks. You want to coach it?' Doggie says 'Sure' "

Doggie says 'Sure' " His small college coaching in basketball included nine years as head coach at Muhlenberg, which at that time wasn't really "small college" in terms of its basketball program. In his last two years - just before he came to HC - his teams were 20-5 and 24-4, playing against some traditional D1 programs. Made the quarterfinals of the NIT both years. So he should have been well known as a basketball coach - at least to the HC administrators who hired him - before he showed up in Worcester. Btw in the 1940's, Muhlenberg regularly played Temple, LaSalle, St. Joes, Rutgers, Lehigh, Lafayette, Bucknell, and some other D1's. Very different era.

In 1950 Muhlenberg had 2 players in the NBA Yeah, when I was a kid, someone in my neighborhood said "you know Bob (another neighbor) has a brother who played in the NBA". Bob was a decent athlete but an average sized guy,so I took that with a grain of salt.. Years later I looked it up and he was right. Harry Donovan, played briefly for the Knicks.

The first football game Holy Cross played was against WPI and HC lost. Muhlenberg has almost as many students as nearby Lafayette. Like HC and neighbor WPI they both have robust sports programs yet in different divisions. Not that there's anything wrong with that, as they say on the Seinfeld re-runs.

You might be shocked to find out that expression was used in the original show and not just in the re-runs.

It is interesting that Douggie Julian won a national championship, but he didn't get along with Cousy. I think Buster was a better coach.

They need to make and sell a DVD for those who don’t have access to Comcast or whatever local outlets they’ve been showing this on.

Looks like Channel 55 or 727 on Cox in RI is NBC Sports Boston. Not sure if it’s a premium sports channel or not, but it looks like it’s available on Cox. You can check using your zip code here www.nbcsports.com/boston/channel-finder
