Marketing technique I fear - more likely they're scrambling for players at this pricepoint - very steep and many people are away on vacations

Too bad they don’t have a “Young Alumni” option.

What is the cost / price point. I live in DC Metro/ N Virginia and don’t look at the other location events. I might be able to find supporters down here for people who want to attend

Thanks
That is pretty steep for anybody unless they have corporate support or haven’t contributed yet and feel a need to support the CAF.
Perhaps they should find a few people to underwrite the cost of the event and charge $500 to play-sometimes in marketing volume beats price and is sustainable over time

Getting to play Baltusrol is amazing, tons of golf history.

Getting to play Baltusrol is amazing, tons of golf history. And they will be playing the Lower course too.
JMO, the added lunch angle could have been excluded to reduce cost. But when you break it down, a full lunch, dinner, goody bag, green fees, caddies and playing an historic course that has hosted multiple US Open and PGA Majors it can be a bucket list event for some duffers.
BTW, the Upper course - sometimes ignored by outsiders - is just as challenging as the Lower IMO....and has also hosted several LPGA events.

At least for those who have an extra $1500 handy.

Guessing they don't have "senior" tee box areas at this course

Two years ago, after decades of 'some day' dreams, I broke the bank and journeyed to Augusta National for The Masters. Tix for 2 rounds cost me $2,000, a $500 splurge in the lavish merchandise building and airfare/car rental rounded out to about $3,200. The motel in Columbia, SC ( 45 minute drive to Augusta ) was peanuts and parking at Augusta was FREE. The on-course refreshments were superb and very inexpensive.
Believe me....it was worth every penny !

Perfect day for golf here in ny area - anyone have any idea how this tourney worked out and if there are a decent number of players ? And of course, any first hand insight into what the AD and coaches (?) had to say would be appreciated.

Saw a tweet this morning from Coach Annie Mac saying she was on the bus heading down to New Jersey for the golf outing.
Last week the registration list for the outing showed 32 names, and I am hoping that there was a surge of last-minute registrants. I am unable to access the registration list this morning.

Good thing they cancelled the fall tournament in Worcester for basketball. Concerned about hurting attendance at this tournament. Imagine what attendance would have been if we golfed last fall too

Perhaps they should find a few people to underwrite the cost of the event and charge $500 to play-sometimes in marketing volume beats price and is sustainable over time I'd have to think the $1500 price is set without revenue generation in mind, but maybe I am wrong. If there are 32 people scheduled into the tournament, 32*1500=$48,000 and that does not count the cost to rent the course, amenities, etc. $48k is relatively small for an athletic department that spends close to $7 million on football alone. The price is probably set to self-select the people most able to help the department financially. Let's be real, not many people are going to pay $1500 for golf without a considerable amount of disposable income. Getting the new AD facetime with some of these individuals is what I imagine the purpose of this event is, not improving relations with the alumni community at large.

The solicitation for the event stated that the cost to play was $1500, and of that amount $250 is tax deductible as a contribution to the CAF. To me, that means Baltusrol gets $1250 per golfer for use of the course and the dinner. I also understand that most courses establish a minimum number of golfers so that the cost equals $1250 times the minimum number of golfers.
It's possible that the registration list was not updated the last time I viewed it, or maybe there was a last-minute influx of registrants, so trying to figure out whether this event made some money or lost some money is pure speculation. In my view, this event was entirely about raising money -- using Baltusrol and the new AD as the draw.

Thanks for the insight.
32*250=$8000. That is pennies for a D1 athletic department. Even if you doubled the enrollment to get to $16,000, that is still pennies. Hard to imagine the athletic department would go through all that work to raise $8000. One phone call to a number of alumni and you could likely get that.
I do not believe this event had really anything to do with raising money other than putting the new AD in front of wealthy alums who may be able to help the department further down the line. Nothing wrong with that.

Nothing wrong with that. I would imagine that this event was scheduled long before the new AD was hired in June. This is probably just another mistake by the former (delusional) AD who thought there would be demand for this type of event to support an athletic department that has fielded ONE team with a winning record over the past 3 years? The novelty of playing at Baltusrol is likely lost on the vast majority of individuals who would be willing to shell out $1,500, as they can already access whatever course they want if they are golfers.

The registration page showed that two sponsorships for a total of $40,000 were sold so it actually did make some money. Even your local sports league/scholarship fund type scrambles make more of their money on the sponsorships, on-course contests, raffles, and auctions than on the entry fees. This HC event is just a high class/high price version of one of those local affairs.
