In 2017-18, HC was at the very bottom of all PL and A-10 schools with a men's golf team, spending $84,000. Loyola spent $401,000. GWU was high at $1,007,000. I think HC has started awarding some merit aid for golf to get recruits of this calibre, and residing outside of New England. (I have no idea how GWU can spend so much, Do they practice in Scotland? The NCAA cap is 4.5 full scollies, about $315K total at PL cost of attendance levels. Loyola would look to be about at the cap.) Six scollies each @ $25,000 = $150,000 and would bring HC spending up to about the level of Colgate, At $230,000, HC would still lag behind Lafayette and Loyola No scholarships for golf. No way. Adding a scholarship for a M sport isn't happening as you would need to add a W one at same time. What made you think that?

What made you think that? its possible that the women's golf team is getting some scollie money as well, which would offset any male scollie money. As women's golf has not published its roster yet, can't speculate further. And the women are getting 18 scollies for ice hockey, are they not? Of the nine women on the 2018-19 roster, seven are from New England, one from Long Island, and one from NM. I am simply speculating because I think it is highly unusual for HC golf to have realized such a large incoming class of accomplished freshmen golfers from a geographically disparate area, --without some inducement. But maybe its because HC's home course is now the Worcester Country Club. One of the incoming freshmen has qualified for the U. S. Amateur in two weeks. Another of the incoming freshman is a fraternal triplet, with a sister playing field hockey at BC, and a brother swimming at Middlebury. Cost much?

The exact cost for the 2019-20 school year combined for all three colleges including all fees, expenses and books is: An arm and a leg times three. Let us hope these three highly rated colleges factored in the minor sport participation and the large burden of three tuitions and offered generous financial aid. It is a rare to have an opportunity for an exact comparison between colleges using the exact same family finances. I certainly don't want to know any confidential information about any student, but I bet even though the family finances are exactly the same for all three minor sport playing incoming freshmen, the financial aid packages differed from college to college. If I was a betting man, I would bet on Middlebury being the most generous, then BC then HC - unless either HC or BC gives some athletic scholarship aid.

Christian's (he's a southpaw) accomplishment speaks to the quality of his golf - there's usually at least 100 golfers with a maximum of a 3 handicap (?) that compete in these qualifiers. Our coach is obviously out there recruiting with the Luth (I understand there is a place to swing in the winter) and everything else the school has to offer. I'd be surprised if his budget has increased much. Or maybe this kid is just a good golfer from Massachusetts who liked Holy Cross and would have the opportunity to play D1 golf there? This article indicates that he first became aware of the school by visiting with his older brother a few years ago, then became more interested after taking a tour in the August summer prior to his Senior year. Hardly some vast recruiting strategy where the coach is building relationships during kids' Sophomore years and getting them to choose HC over other top programs because they can hit balls into a net inside during the Winter. www.itemlive.com/2019/03/27/st-marys-emmerich-commits-to-holy-cross/1) St. Mary's of Lynn has sent students to HC over the years. HC must have a positive image at the HS. 2) Tony Conigliaro's number should be retired at Fenway Park. 3) Most reporters don't have access to Breezy's expertise so they could assume a D-1 commitment means scholarship. 4) It is exciting if prudent use of partial athletic scholarships can get this level of recruit to HC for a minor sport. 5) We're climbing out of the dank cellar. Seventh place here we come!

Three of our golfers played in the N.E. Amateur this week and all very well - all three made the 36 hole cut (low 44 scores)- Frosh Christian Emerich finished 17th, and was followed by rising juniors Harrison Thayer and Connor Phillips

That is nice to hear. Perhaps we will see improvement in all our sports (major and minor) moving forward.

Does it make you feel better when some HC teams get pummeled? You want a winning culture? If you do, why not root for all teams to improve?

Christian Emerich is playing in the national amateur this week at Pinehurst, N.C. - He shot 82 today on the no.2 course (most difficult and more than 7400 yards) - 2nd round of stroke play tmro on course no.4. Regardless of his scores, it's a significant accomplishment to be competing in this tourney

Christian shot 77 yesterday - very respectable showing - he should be playing on the first 5 for us this season

men's golf will be improved for sure - they finished 5th (of 17 D.1 teams) at a tourney in Ct this weekend. Jr Connor Philips shot even par 144 for 36 holes and two others shot 3 over. Haven't seen that in a very long time. Jackie Gonzalez of the women's team shot a career low 73 this weekend in the first round of a 36 hole tourney in NJ - unfortunately she's the only player we have who can break 90 so the team finished 8th of 10. good for her !

Harvard easily took first place in the men's tournament (21 shots better than Columbia), followed by Columbia, Navy, and UPenn. Gross scores for HC and these three other schools were within three shots.

Just wait until the golf simulator!!
Speaking of which, the new roof on the south side of The Jo looks excessively high (35-40 feet?) for everyday hoops. Almost high enough for a videoboard for intramurals!

Only one of our frosh played and the team did very well again this weekend at the St. John's tourney at Bethpage on L.I. Over three rounds two players shot a 68, and none of our 5 had a score over 76 over the three rounds. We finished 9th out of 14 D.1 schools.

Need to clarify the women’s golf team receives NO scholarship money. They do not even get “merit aid” to make up for not having scholarships.

If anyone thinks the golf simulator is being put in the “Jo” for the benefit of the golf teams they are wrong. There was a simulator (which is the same one that will be reinstalled in the new building) that was available for use by the teams in the old field house. Thing barely worked and now, they’re using it as a selling point on the new building. Highly doubt golf teams will get priority on using this thing and use will be limited to crazy hours and short blocks of time (per usual with these teams)
