Terrific piece - thanks for sharing 8485.
We are lucky to have Jen Toland on the HC beat. She does a great job covering all things HC.

Great guy and probably, given his record and time served, our permanent best coach ever. Privileged to have been on the Athletic Council that hired Ronnie P as AD and the then 32 year old Dartmouth Coach as our new HC in 1972.

Nice article about a really good guy. Although I don't like Calhoun was happy to see George reach the pinnacle of the coaching profession with Uconn. Thinking of George I believe that he knew that the landscape of college basketball changed for HC in the late 70's when he lost John Pinone at the last minute to Massamino and Villanova. It was thought that the Judge from Ct had delivered Pinone but for some reason it didn't happen and from then on it seemed like we couldn't close the deal on this type of player any longer, probably due to Big East emergence. The1979 team would have been very good if you added Pinone to Perry, Witts, Kelly et al.

Maybe not Pinone's level, but Chris Logan was a top recruit who had a fine HC career, especially his last two seasons.

Agree Logan was an excellent player difference being Pinone was a big time contributor from day one. Think the 79-80 team with Pinone would have beaten Iona in tournament

Think the 79-80 team with Pinone would have beaten Iona in tournament Although we did not win on the court, Iona had to vacate their wins when Ruland was discovered to have signed with an agent before the season. And was declared ineligible.

Nova seemed to start grabbing kids we should have gotten in the late 70's. In addition to Pinone, they later got Harold Pressley (from St. Bernard's in Norwich CT) and Dave Mulquin's brother, Mike. I think that perhaps Justice S. could have delivered on Pressley who went to St. Bernard's in the good jurist's baliwick but do think that any influence he would have had on Pinone is overstated. South Catholic and St. Bernard's did not even play in the same league and the South coach, the legendary Joe Reilly, had lot of his own contacts. Reilly did send HC a player who did not work out--Doug M, ex '88. Nova was definitely recruiting at Connecticut Catholic schools in those days. My father once sat in the stands next to a Nova assistant who was looking at Mark Murphy who ended up at Fordham in that same time frame. Finally, I have to imagine losing Dwayne McClain was tough for George as well.

...then he got the program going again (even in the MAAC); then you-know-who delivered the coup-de-grace by making basketball non-scholarship.
Ironically him leaving might have been part of the impetus to bring scholarships back.

Who is the "him?" Blaney? Or "he who shall not be named?" I assume the latter because we went through the Raynor years w/o schollies and would think any impetus would have been lost by then.

Those years without scholarships were mostly dreadful years.
Not well known on this board is the fact that, had we had schollies in 1995, we had a real legitimate shot at signing Wally Szczerbiak. During Wally's HS senior year I went to 15 of his games because I was amazed at what an incredible shooter he was. I started sitting with his family around mid season and spoke to his dad about Wally possibly going to HC. His response was that "HC would be great but there are no athletic scholarships....and I think Wally has earned that." Wally was a skinny kid then and only was lightly recruited (thus ending up at mid major Miami of Ohio).

Thanks for sharing, Crusader. I had heard of a few names of players we missed out on in the mid/late 90's because of the lack of schollies, but never knew we had a chance at Wally S.
