Women have Colgate at home tonight - Raiders are 1-6-1, 0-1-1 PL but play a much tougher ooc schedule - among their losses have been to UConn, Columbia, Vanderbilt and Syracuse (we never play that level of competition). we're 2-2-5 and 0-0-2 in the league so far, so this will be a big test to see if our team has the goods to make a run at a playoff spot (has not happened since 2000 !)

Scoreless, into overtime. Out-shot 9-8 in regulation, 6-2 on corner kicks. Holy Cross very defensive-minded, and very good at it. Watching some on Stadium - good feed, stands filled with empty people . . We certainly don't look like a team that was picked for 8th.

The team seems to be moving in a positive direction.

This club could turn into one of the more pleasant surprises of the year. After getting waxed twice on the West Coast, looks like the game plan now is to overplay massively at the defensive end.
If nothing else, there's a good chance they'll work their way into the record books - William and Mary's nine ties in 2005 appears to be the most ever in a season

Another record that is within reach is the NCAA record for 0-0 ties, which is five in a season. HC already has three. HC has now gone eight straight games without a loss. They are now only 95 games short of the record, which is held by North Carolina, of 103 consecutive games without a loss.

And to 2OT. Holy Cross with a couple of good chances in the first extra session, but couldn't convert. We're faster than AU, and winning some key stat battles (9-5 shots on goal, 8-4 corners).

One of the many things I hate about soccer—all the ties. Shootouts are even worse. Solution—gradually reduce the number of players on the field

One of the many things I hate about soccer—all the ties. Shootouts are even worse. Solution—gradually reduce the number of players on the field That has been tried and didn't work well at all. The field is so big and the players are exhausted after 110 minutes (120 in International play), so you end up with a very slow game where almost everyone stays back on defense. There are better ways to get around going to PK's and I wish they would experiment with a few of them.

That should increase scoring chances.

They reduce the players on the field hockey field for overtime which I think is 7 on 7 so I think something similar could be done

You could do set plays, but in many ways no different than Pks Going 7 vs 7 probably the best option

That has been tried and didn't work well at all. The field is so big and the players are exhausted after 110 minutes (120 in International play), so you end up with a very slow game where almost everyone stays back on defense. There are better ways to get around going to PK's and I wish they would experiment with a few of them. They reduce the players on the field hockey field for overtime which I think is 7 on 7 so I think something similar could be done They could try that - but there are a lot of differences: 1. A full-size soccer field has 50% more square feet than a field hockey field. Thus much more running. 2. Regulation in a field hockey game is 60 minutes. Regulation time in soccer is 90 minutes. Thus players are a lot more tired. That's 50% more playing time on a field with 50% more area to cover. 3. Field hockey has unlimited substitutions. College soccer has very restricted rules on substitutions and the better players may have already been in for a lot of minutes prior to OT. 4. Soccer players in general run significantly more than college field hockey players. 5. Soccer has a restrictive offside rule that means play would not open up that much even if 7 v 7 since the defensive line determines where the attackers can go a lot of the time. In Field hockey, with no offside rule, play opens up a lot when it goes to 7 v 7 and attackers can spread the field and set up deep in the offensive zone. When I have watched 7 v 7 OT's in club soccer tournaments, play got very slow - much slower than 11 v 11. In field hockey, that is not the case. Better options than PK's to decide who advances might include: 1. Use a much wider goal in OT. That would markedly increase the chance of a score. (That would only be feasible in bigger events who could arrange to have that sort of goal available. 2. Eliminate offside in OT to open up the game more. 3. In OT, go to a modified lacrosse rule, where each team can only have 5 field players on offense and 5 on defense. While there wold be a learning curve and a few rules would have to be added, this would be my favorite. 5 v 5 soccer, where a player is not required to run much - indeed is not allowed to run much - would be really exciting. And it likely would produce a fairly quick goal. 4. Remove the goalkeepers. While this would be last on my list, I have seen it done and it is preferable to the silliness of using penalty kicks. Since defenders end up protecting the goal, it is not as easy to score as you might think. However crosses, direct kicks etc become 50-50 balls near the goal since there is no longer a player who can soar above the crowd and use his hands. Also it is no longer possible to block a shot aimed at the top of the goal.

I am not much of a soccer fan, but this team has become interesting enough that I'm actually watching the games - sometimes look like a skilled underdog deciding to play a lot of four corners, after playing "normally" and getting hammered twice out of the gate. Would really like to hear the coach talk about this.
These women might be writing the best sports story on the hill over the next couple months.

A goal by Kelly Crowley gives Holy Cross a 1-0 lead over league-leading Navy, midway through the first half.
