The 2019 season starts in 16 days as Holy Cross travels to Annapolis, Maryland for the first-ever game between the Crusaders and Navy's Midshipmen. Last year, in Coach Bob Chesney's first season, the Crusaders got off to a rough start going 1-6, including a loss to Bucknell at Fitton Field, before winning the last 4 games of the season and finish 5-6. How many regular season games do you predict that the Crusaders will win this season? Here's the schedule
@ Navy--hard to believe this is the first time we'll play Navy, an intriguing run-run-run oriented team
VS New Hampshire- Wildcats won last year's game 28-0
@ Yale--HC's all time record versus Yale is an abysmal 5-28-0, but the Crusaders won a thriller last year with Derek Ng's winning FG in OT
VS Syracuse---Super-tough FCS opponent. Once a regular on our schedule, Syracuse has not played HC since 1973, the infamous 3-5 loss in 0 degree weather
@ Bucknell- Bison won last year 19-16 for their only victory of the season
@ Brown--Last game was in 2015. HC holds the all-time advantage with a 32-25-3 record
VS Harvard--Harvard won last year's game 33-31.
VS Colgate--HC played the PL champs tough last season losing 17-24
@ Lehigh-- HC embarrassed Lehigh last year winning 56-0. Lehigh is now led by long-time HC coach Tom Gilmore
VS Lafayette-HC won last season 40-14
@ Fordham- Crusaders won last year 17-13
VS Georgetown--HC won last year's game 32-31 after staging its biggest comeback of all-time after trailing by 26 points with under 20 minutes to play
Please weigh in with your vote in the poll and with a post of the number of games you believe HC will win. Optimistic, pessimistic, and realistic editorial are all encouraged. Go Cross!!

@ Bucknell- After back to back loses HC comes back 42-10
@ Brown-- Competitive for a half HC takes over 28-17
VS Harvard--Harvard’s recruiting proves to be the difference-Crimson 38-31
VS Colgate-- A 60 minute war, but Colgate prevails 31-28

@ Fordham- Crusaders cruise 35-17
VS Georgetown--HC playing for a share of the title as Colgate surprised earlier-HC 38-24

We could VERY easily be 0-4 after our first 4 games. From then on, I see the chance to run the table.

I think we can go 1-1 vs Yale and UNH and then put the pedal to the metal and challenge for the PL crown and post season play.

IF we can stay relatively healthy thru the first 4 games (even if we lose all 4), I can see us steamrolling our PL competition and hitting 7 wins.
Our ground game may crush our PL opposition (OL and RB are a particular HC strength this year IMHO).

Well, as the eternal optimist, I see the following: Wins - UNH, Bucknell, Brown, Lehigh, Lafayette, Fordham, Georgetown Losses - at Navy, at Yale, at Syracuse, Colgate, at Harvard 7-5 with the possibility of one or more upsets either way. Having 5 of the first 6 games on the road is a lot to overcome.

5-7.....1-5 OOC, 4-2 PL
We'll be solid/decent but this schedule is too daunting so early in the Chesney-era.
I think we will be very good in 2020.

Six wins. A 1-3 start would be good and this OOC schedule is just too much. Without a stumble to a weak opponent, maybe 7. Six though.

@ Navy--Loss but it will be a nice sunny day for tailgating I am sure.
VS New Hampshire- Big win in the home opener. Lots of chirping at unhfan
@ Yale--Yalies stay home from an early season non conference game and HC fans are thrilled to beat the Elis in New Haven (or is it actually in West Haven?)
VS Syracuse---Not very pretty, I am sure.
@ Bucknell- We crush the bison and then require bison137 to explain the difference between buffalo and bison for us.
@ Brown--Easy win
VS Harvard--I hate, hate, hate losing to Harvard but I am afraid it will happen here.
VS Colgate--Sadly, we drop this one as well. Some small panic sets in on Crossports.
@ Lehigh-- I am going to feel a little bad for TG as our guys stomp all over the slide rule gang.
VS Lafayette-Not even Larry Holmes can help these lame kittens.
@ Fordham- The only thing worse in the Bronx than the Yankee post season collapse will be the smackdown that happens in this one.
VS Georgetown--Not even close. Big HC win.
8-4. We tie for the PL title but lose to Colgate on the tiebreaker.

The Cross could defeat UNH to end the 4 year season 2-2 or UNH wins and ends 3-1 against the Cross. Any Given Saturday. Here is what I do know. If the Cross loses to UNH of the CAA the board will be the usual life is over, the new coach has to go, no wonder people don’t support this program etc. If the Cross can pull the upset it will be we’re back, our Coach is as good as the guy in Foxborough, we should play Alabama or Notre Dame in Worcester of course because back in the 40s you played big time team at home , FBS here we come baby 😂 Gentlemen we’ll see in a few short weeks.

We drummed UNH when we were terrible two years ago. I would be surprised if the Crossports reaction when we beat them again is what unhfan suggests. If we somehow lose, I also doubt if the reaction will be that the sky is falling. I do predict a few people will kill the OC because that happens after every loss with a select few posters.

Yes you did. It was a huge upset on that day which is the beauty of college football. If I’m correct UNH the week before had defeated an FBS team and came to Worcester and got destroyed by Holy Cross in one of our worse losses of the 14 year playoff run. Last year with the worse team UNH has had in the past 15 years the Cats shut out the Cross. As I’ve said anything can happen. On paper one would assume that UNH of the CAA should beat a PL team 3 out of 4 games but Any Given Saturday!

@ Lehigh--Holy Cross wins its fifth straight 48 - 14
Lafayette--Another Holy Cross blowout 45 - 7
@ Fordham--Holy Cross on a roll 42 - 14
Georgetown--Holy Cross finishes the regular season with another win 49 - 21

6 total and only blemish in Patriot League is Colgate. And all of this depends on how much improvement we see in the offense. I am Not convinced that the OC is up to the job - hope he proves me wrong

I've got 6 games where I see us as 80% to 95% to win: @ Lehigh, @ Fordham, @ Bucknell, @ Brown, Lafayette, Georgetown
I see two games where we are 5% (I don't go lower) to 15% to win: Syracuse and Navy
By my reckoning there are 4 games in the middle with HC 30% to 55% to win: Colgate, @ Yale, UNH, Harvard
These add up to 7.2 wins for me so I'll go with 7 wins. We could win 8 by taking all 6 of the higher percentage games and 2 of 4 against Colgate-Yale-UNH-Harvard. I suppose we could win 9 if we're even better than I thought--hoping for that.

In EVERY GAME last year, there was no game plan on the offensive side of the ball. The defense took close to 1000 snaps in 2018 which was only worse in 2003 when HC was 1-11 and there was no head coach. So, yes there is substantial room for improvement (Chesney, Spead/Shred, etc). Kudos to the time and effort put into recruiting and excited to see how things factor out this year.

Who knows, but I wouldn't pencil in as a 80-90% certainty any win on the road this year.
This schedule (though I like it) has so many obstacles: 5 of the first 6 on road, toughest OOC since joining the PL etc is going to make going .500 or better an accomplishment in itself. It almost makes the UNH game a must win in many ways.
The flipside of course, is that it provides so much opportunity. How many people nationally will ask "Who's Holy Cross?" if we somehow knock off Navy or play Syracuse decently etc
The danger though, is that if things go sideways, this schedule has a 2 or 3 win season written all ovah it.

An awful lot of things, in my opinion, would have to go a great distance sideways for HC to won only 2 or 3 games this season. Hopefully we are on our way to answering the QB question, but I think we are very likely to have a very powerful running game this season (experienced line & talented backs) and I see us moving forward.

Believe me, I am by no means pessimistic going into this campaign...just that there are a lot of hurdles to jump to be very (7,8,9 wins) successful this season. Without going through every game, a fairly solid to an extremely solid argument can be made that all the games save for maybe at Bucknell, Lafayette and GTown could result in a Sader loss. If nothing else, it should be an interesting season....can't wait but also don't want to rush Summah's end
