Sort of a free-form thread on how the season is going so far, who common opponents are playing this week etc etc ... if only to keep the mojo/interest going during our bye week this week.
Quick random thoughts:
It seems like the Ivies take an eternity to get going during these "12 game seasons" ...should help us somewhat as we travel to the Bowl in just under 2 weeks.
Yale-Brown supposedly played a controlled scrimmage this past weekend per the Ivy Voy board....not too much to glean from the responses there....pretty sure Perry was the Brown QB.
Syracuse hosts #1 Clemson this weekend. Trivia (of which I know not the answer): Who was the last common opponent we played who played the #1 team in the country and us the same season? Maybe BC when they played Texas in the 70s? I dunno
Carry on. Go Saders!!!!

Not at the time they played, but defending national champion Miami was ranked #1 early in the 1984 season. They had slipped from that spot by the time Flutie and Phelan were thinking about miracles

Holy Cross played Carnegie Tech in 1938 and beat them and Carnegie Tech played number 1 TCU?

Holy Cross played Carnegie Tech in 1938 and beat them and Carnegie Tech played number 1 TCU? The qb for TCU in 1938 was Davey O'brien. There have been two HC qb's that were finalists for the Davey O'Brien award. Who were they? (This is probably an easy one)

This one was close, Army played preseason #1 Nebraska in 1972 but the Huskers were upset by UCLA by the time they played the Black Knights of the Hudson (at West Point I might add).
Wasn't pretty.....77-7 Nebraska. We lost a heartbreakahh 15-13 later that season.
Still unsure of the exact answer.....it may be Carnegie Tech 1938.

One of the most intriguing trivia questions to be posted on this board in sometime, thank you!

Wiley and Muldoon. Back then there were a lot more “finalists”

Wiley and Muldoon. Back then there were a lot more “finalists” That may be true, but they were still finalists. 1984 – Doug Flutie (Boston College) Runner up: Robbie Bosco (BYU) Finalists: Damon Allen (Cal State Fullerton); Bernie Kosar (Miami); Chuck Long (Iowa); Peter Muldoon (Holy Cross); Eric Thomas (Florida State); Mike Tomczak (Ohio State); Willie Totten (Mississippi Valley State); Jack Trudeau (Illinois) 1987 – Don McPherson (Syracuse) Runner up: Troy Aikman (UCLA) Finalists: Kerwin Bell (Florida); Jeff Burger (Auburn); Dee Dowis (Air Force); Todd Ellis (South Carolina); Chuck Hartleib (Iowa); Tom Hodson (LSU); Rodney Peete (USC); Mike Perez (San Jose State); Todd Santos (San Diego State); Steve Taylor (Nebraska); Steve Walsh (Miami); Jeff Wiley (Holy Cross)

Absolutely. Both were great. I’d have put Ciaccio and Randolph in there as well

Obviously he wasn't but the 1984 Davey O'Brien voting shows he was darn good.

Remember talking to Peter, Pat O’brien( both played for Maas Collins at Carroll) and Peter’s dad/brother Casey who played for BC), during Christmas break his senior year
It came down to Syracuse, Virginia and Holy Cross. We also had another QB from this area, Churchill HS, Paul Grief who was 2nd team All-State in Md, who left after his freshman year to return home and play for Maryland

They were very intertwined....Muldoon chose HC ovah BC (thank you EBW)....which sort of opened the door for BC to offer Flutie

Peter thought of BC as his brother’s school The other person in that conversation was the individual you listed above His mom and dad tried to attend all of the games Pat was a bonus pick up for us -that year we barely lost TE Mark Wheeler (Kentucky), Kevin Campbell (PSU) and Bobby Bethard’s son.
Would love to see them recruit Metro DC and Baltimore again

Please remember Doug Flutie was coming to Holy Cross on 1/2 scholarship until August 1st along with Muldoon. BC had a commit change his mind which opened up a full scholarship to BC for Doug. Doug was coming as an athlete to HC, recruited by Duffner.

Holy Cross played Syracuse in 1959 and 1960; SU was national champs in 1959 and was #1 (but didn't finish that way) when they played HC in 1960.
That's not your exact question, but it does bring #1 into play.
Idle Thought: If Flutie was the HC quarterback would Carter have run the same offense. Muldoon, although quite good, took quite a beating as a ball carrier, which was a staple of HC's attack at the time.

FCS Goliath NDSU makes a rare appearance in our (roughly) parts this weekend; taking on the Fighting Blue Hens of Delaware...be curious what kind of crowd they get, type of game etc.
UNH, like the Pats, are headed down to Florida this weekend to take on FBS FIU. Again, curious how they look after our game.
ETA: thanks timhc....though, yeah, it's technically not the question/answer. It wasn't those Texas-BC mid-70s games either, checked. For some reason those BC teams didn't play those Pitt Tony Dorsett/Matt Cavanaugh teams when they may have been #1 in the mid-70s as well.

Doug was coming as an athlete to HC, recruited by Duffner. I have fond memories of BC coach "Cowboy" Jack Bicknell. He made football fun. Flutie got inserted into the Penn State game as a freshman and the great four year run was on. Doug was from Natick and took the area by storm in a way that I don't think has been repeated on the college level in Mass. since. Both Doug and Jack were very personable so that helped. According to Wikipedia Jack is 81 and still with us. I remember watching BC vs HC on Frozen Fitton Field the day Flutie flew from Worcester to the Downtown Athletic Club to accept his Heisman Trophy and saying: "So that's what an NFL arm looks like."

Would Flutie start on an All Fitton Field Opponent Team at QB? Second team, third team QB?

Flutie at QB vs Dan Marino.

That same 1981 Flutie team played Penn State when Penn (and Todd Blackledge) was #2. Later in the season Penn went to #1 before finishing at #3.

Would Flutie start on an All Fitton Field Opponent Team at QB? Second team, third team QB? Can't think of a better college QB we faced at home than BC's Heisman winner (and College HOFer). I've seen him on top 10 and top 20 college QB lists and don't think we played that level QB at home before or since.

Jack Bicknell had an 18-35-1 record at Maine, including a 4-20-1 record in conference play. His only winning season was his first year. Most coaches would get fired with that record....he gets PROMOTED to head coach of a D-1 program. Boy were times different then....

Completely idle thought but if any college football fan want to watch Tom Flacco (Towson) play QB he's going against Maine at 7PM (you'll have to search for it on the net and it may be unavailable w/o FloTV). His production reminded me of Flutie last year and can really run and throw. Much shorter than his big brother but an outstanding athlete in his own right (was drafted MLB out of high school).
