For field hockey, there are currently two players from South Africa, and of the five incoming recruits, one is from Vancouver Canada, and one is from England.

So, here's my question: If a kid from Europe (or elsewhere) lands a spot on a college athletic team, does that generate enough publicity "back home" so that "regular" (read: ability to full pay) students are attracted to the school? We know that Holy Cross and other like-minded schools would be happy to get more foreign students to matriculate and help fill the coffers. Perhaps getting some foreign athletes, even on scholarship might help not just on the court or field but publicity-wise and be seen as an investment rather than an expense. "Chumming the waters" so to speak. Holy Cross currently advertises in Monaco, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein.😂 HC should also recruit in San Marino. 😂

Well just to bring it back to the original title of the thread. I do not believe BG is currently employed anywhere. I looked at his linkedin profile which says both Holy Cross and semi-retired. I think someone here would likely know if he were coaching anywhere. Not sure we would know if he had some office job outside of athletics. He's somewhere in his early 60's. He doesn't have one foot in the grave, but he's a bit old to be starting a whole new career

Is there a public docket on the status of this case? Nearing 2 and a half years since it was filed. Fr. B. was a named defendant; he is no longer on the East Coast. Some of the BoT are no longer on the Board. Other principals, e.g., the interim AD who suspended BG, are no longer with the college. Were any of these individuals deposed?

I can't answer that, but the mention of "interim AD" makes me wonder if either of the two most recent interim ADs had been named instead of Sullivan, perhaps things would have been resolved short of a lawsuit. If Pine had stayed a little longer it might have resolved cleanly also because he considered the initial incident a mole hill and not a mountain, as I recall. Of course we don't know the whole story because no institution clams up like HC. The lawyers called the shots at some point, but much interaction within the Athletic Dept. must have happened, too.

Yes, there is a public docket. Google Mass Superior Court dockets and you'll find it. 2.5 years isn't an especially long time for a Superior Court case, especially during the pandemic. Sometimes defendants are named simply because they represent an institution; other times it's they because they may have actual knowledge of events, in which case they would be deposed.

600 plus D.1 wins and he’s given up coaching ? Why ?

All kinds of possibilities but just some that come to mind:
If he gets another head coaching job or maybe even an assistant position, it probably damages his claim that Holy Cross ruined his reputation.
Also, while nothing I can prove, but to my eye, the last 3-5 years he was in "Carmody mode" (i.e. R.I.P. - "retired in place" going through the motions) and may well be happy not to be working. You can love something but after many decades, coaching might well be wearing on an individual.
Another possibility is that his reputation is ruined. That might either be because there is some basis for his lawsuit or his reputation is shot simply because he is no longer seen as successful and/or he is simply too old and be perceived as his salary demands would be too high based on his experience.
There may well be other reasons that don't come immediately to mind.

600 plus D.1 wins and he’s given up coaching ? Why ? HC went 139-173 his last ten full seasons. In PL play, they were 78-82 and never finished higher than 3rd. Also did not win any PL championships. And this is subjective, but I don't think he had a good reputation as a coach around the league. I think he would have found it very hard to get another D1 head coaching job when he left HC.

It could be as simple as someone in his 60s with his son coaching and grandson (I think) playing doesn't want to move from the area. As an assistant, I mean; I agree w/Bison and others his D1 head coaching career was most likely ovah.
By the way, did the assistant coach in the end go quietly (and hopefully, she's employed somewhere and happy) or is there still some case pending?

The status at the start of 2022 is that the College has filed a motion to compel discovery. Gibbons' new lawyer(s) has filed a letter request to dismiss the College's motion to compel. A hearing on the College's motion to compel was scheduled for January 4, 2022, but was not held. Motions to compel are filed when one of the parties claims that the other party is not responsive to requests for documents, items, etc., or the response was inadequate. The docket does not describe the basis for the plaintiff's request to dismiss. Early on, several of Gibbons' complaints were tossed, so the scope of his lawsuit is much reduced.

In the age of wokeness, the nature of the allegations against BG (whether true or not) would make it nearly impossible for him to get a job coaching in this area.

They replaced him with a coach with zero America East titles and a career record of 146–155 and 82–76 in America East in ten seasons. Not like there was a big difference between them.

Sideline demeanor between BG and MM is 180 degrees.
The team now plays with confidence that they can win as demonstrated against Bucknell and URI.
Under BG, particularly over his last five years, the team appeared to be very tense and nervous regarding their execution. Constant negative yelling and screaming from the sidelines has a detrimental effect.

Not up on what happened with URI but all three of the Rams losses were in that stretch with Holy Cross in the middle of losses to Long Beach State and Buffalo. They haven't lost since. Looks like all the top players for the Rams played in that game.... MM's record at UNH is very similar to what Gibbons did at HC. MM also had the benefit of many more D-3 games to boost up her wins against the Daniel Webster, Worcester State, and Colby-Sawyer's of the world.

BG certainly generated strong reactions from people, but, never heard him use an expletive & his yelling was rarely directed at his players. This has been a very difficult team to figure out. Great wins vs URI, Bucknell & Lehigh - not so good against NU, Brown & AU. MM has done good job, especially on defense & I think her recruiting has been solid. The PL pretty much sucks this year, the bottom half is really bad and the top half seems to be fairly evenly matched, lot of games still to be played, injuries + COVID may well have a major effect on who wins the title.

BG's voice degraded to a high pitched rasp by the fourth quarter. He still kept squeaking at the refs as loud and forcefully as he could but sounded ridiculous
He invested himself but I prefer Maureen's approach: coach, teach, game plan during practice and with the assistants between games, make adjustments during time outs and halftime, but in general let the players play and the officials ref during their forty minutes.

No, I'm saying he over coached during the games. He spent a career protesting calls with the refs and did it gain his teams one net point over 35 years? I doubt it.

The only thing I would add is that I posted this (sic) a couple times "if this was a men's game, BG would have been t'd up by now with those rants; they're simply not permitted, especially in the number of times they happened during a ballgame".
Clearly the standards for women's college ball were different from the men's game. Billy operated within those standards, don't remember him giving opponents free throws and extra possessions.

I think Coach Gibbons is very committed to the Worcester area, and if a school was looking for a 60 year old coach, staying local really narrows the pool. Coach McInerney was in a similar situation and I've often thought that is why she never got a head gig anywhere else. She is currently an assistant at nearby Bentley. I don't think Coach Gibbons would realistically take an assistant's job unless it was at a much bigger program like BC or Uconn. My wild guess based on no special information is a combination of Worcester and your first and third thoughts

Early returns on MM are promising and she's certainly capitalizing on the down league, which is easier said then done, so props to her and the current coaching staff. I highly doubt a BG coached team would have had as much success as this current team given his teams from 2012-2014 seemed to perpetually underachieve which was highlighted even more so when AM took over the first time. Somewhere AM shakes her head thinking about what could have been...

This situation goes to show you how even false accusations can ruin a person. The only thing that will help BG is time. He could of looked at administrative positions at places like Clark, WPI, Assumption etc but at the moment he's unhirable. Even though everyone locally knows about his true character, just the accusations alone did him in. I was always hoping that his pal Geno down the road at UCONN would help him out. Give him a spot on the his staff like "Special Assistant To The Head Coach" or "Director of player Development" a non recruiting position that he could still stay involved. Maybe that will happen someday but who knows.
