The only thing I would add is that I posted this (sic) a couple times "if this was a men's game, BG would have been t'd up by now with those rants; they're simply not permitted, especially in the number of times they happened during a ballgame". Clearly the standards for women's college ball were different from the men's game. Billy operated within those standards, don't remember him giving opponents free throws and extra possessions. Do you think arguing calls gets your team extra points by intimidating the refs from calling fouls on your team or inducing them to be tougher on the other team to appease the arguing coach? That's where I doubt BG benefitted HC by even a single point in 35 years. I've heard the argument that it works but lean towards the case for repeated protests boomeranging or at best just being annoying for all involved. It's the fans' job to protest calls. Coaches should be an "Officer of the Court" (pun intended) as they say on the TV legal dramas.

Eye of the beholder I think. BG certainly generated strong reactions from people, but, never heard him use an expletive & his yelling was rarely directed at his players. This has been a very difficult team to figure out. Great wins vs URI, Bucknell & Lehigh - not so good against NU, Brown & AU. MM has done good job, especially on defense & I think her recruiting has been solid. The PL pretty much sucks this year, the bottom half is really bad and the top half seems to be fairly evenly matched, lot of games still to be played, injuries + COVID may well have a major effect on who wins the title. Early returns on MM are promising and she's certainly capitalizing on the down league, which is easier said then done, so props to her and the current coaching staff. I highly doubt a BG coached team would have had as much success as this current team given his teams from 2012-2014 seemed to perpetually underachieve which was highlighted even more so when AM took over the first time. Somewhere AM shakes her head thinking about what could have been... Agree. She is now the Associate Head Coach at Bentley as AM recruited the current head coach during her first stop there as an assistant coach. Any drop off in pay from low D-1 Associate HC in Worcester to high(?) D-2 Associate HC in metro Boston must be minimal or none. My sense is that Bentley has been on a steady incline as a University for decades and is darn proud of it's WBB winning tradition so it doesn't skimp. My Aunt went to Burdett in the mid 1930s. At the time Bentley, Burdett and Bryant and Stratton were all 2 year business schools in Boston. She used to joke that she went to one of the "Big Three." So Bentley has come a long way since it moved out to Waltham.

Not to beat the dead horse, but do I think he earned some makeup calls or may have influenced the way a game was called that earned points, for example, by pointing out some aggressive play by opponents to get some fouls called where they had not been? Absolutely. Particularly during the 90s & early 2000s when the quality of referring was horrible (It’s better now, but not much, think the odd technical on Demski last game). Ironically, at least in my view, he was vastly less demonstrable his last several seasons, especially compared to the 80s & 90s. There are certainly any number of higher profile coaches that do/did the same – Stringer/Mulkey/Geno for example. I get it, there are many who did not like or appreciate his act, so be it.

Your points validate the efforts coach's put in to gain a small edge. I accept it can work.

My experience after hundreds of youth travel games reffed by high school refs looking to make a little extra cash on the weekends is that you can get some benefit by talking to them calmly, doing so at a decibel level where the whole crowd can’t hear and being selective in when you try to make a case that they got something wrong. A lot of times, they will quietly agree with you or just say they didn’t see it. I’m not saying I follow my recommended approach 100% of the time but I have modified my approach over the years and it definitely is more effective.
