I couldn't attend but wondered for anyone who did, how were the various discussions about HC and the future? Usually there is a breakfast in the ballroom with the President, among others, speaking and answering questions.
Any posters go and willing and able to report out?

I attended the game, dinner and sunday morning breakfast. It was not the usual "shareholders meeting" on Sunday, but instead was a lecture and video by an Argentine music prof. who has been at HC for many years. My wife, who is from Argentina, enjoyed chatting with him afterwards. He was astonished to meet someone from northern Argentina. I was blessed to sit in the box at the football game. Had brief chats with Fr. B and Fr. McF, who will soon start a new assignment at the Gregorian Univ. foundation in DC. I was impressed with the turf, which looked to be golf-course quality. At the dinner, which was well attended, I was chatting with one of the development folks. I asked about the return on the endowment and she replied, "You are not the first person to ask that question." She gave me a rather lame excuse that it is invested in a conservative manner. Did not run into the CIO. Food was fairly good. All in all, a pleasant weekend but no real scoops to share.

At the Holy Cross Volunteers meeting on Saturday morning, Fr. B announced that the Jesuits will be moving from Ciampi to a new residence in 2021. If I heard correctly, the new residence, will be built on Avon Street. The reason for the move is the Ciampi is too large a facility for the current Jesuit community.

Okay---how will Ciampi be repurposed?

Okay---how will Ciampi be repurposed? Indeed, I hope that question was asked.
Kind of a shocking development... I mean, decline of the Jesuit/religious population is of course no secret. But Ciampi isn't even 30 years old.
I don't know that it would lend itself to a dorm space, but maybe there's a hotel/function space play there?

This would be very smart. I'm actually a little surprised HC has not developed something like this. It would make for a great revenue stream and I have to imagine it wouldn't be all that difficult to fill the rooms, especially during the academic year. Having stayed at the Hannover Inn (Darmouth), Morris Inn (Notre Dame) and Colgate Inn, it's really nice having a nice hotel to stay in on campus.

Well, presumably we wouldn't be adding a hospitality major....

Loyola opened as a Jesuit Residence in 1965. Ciampi opened in 1993(?). That's 28 years. Ciampi just past 27. Seems like the slope is about the same. Like the idea of a hotel/function/meeting space. Would supplement Hogan nicely. And they'd make a killing on Family/Homecoming/Graduation/Reunion weekends.

It would be might tough to get a reservation on such weekends ! How many guest rooms could possibly be arranged ? 20-25 ? I do like the idea but it's not going to compare with the other 'college inns' mentioned unless a major expansion of the facility is contemplated

It would be a large upgrade over the dorms for reunions- even for the few who would fit

Holy Cross owns 2 Avon, and 11 Avon. www.bing.com/maps?osid=4172f07d-533c-4534-afb4-3962e9921ad0&cp=42.234799~-71.808001&lvl=20&style=g&v=2&sV=2&form=S00027Two Avon, the south side of Avon, runs from Davenport to the road next to the Hart rink. It is entirely wooded. . Street view of Two Avon, looking southeast from Davenport. goo.gl/maps/SefdpNeLw5zdzwJP6Eleven Avon is on the north side, and backs into two houses on Kendig that HC owns. 25 Avon is between 11 Avon and the rink, it is owned by a gas pipeline company. ^^^Two Avon [working on image links] ^^^ 136 and 144 Kendig owned by HC. Also shows 11 and 25 Avon. ________________________________________ HC has indicated that it intends to build a new residence hall on City View., of a rowhouse or town house design. Perhaps Ciampi will be part of that. The timing for exiting Ciampi may coincide with construction of this new residence hall. .

Not that I think Ciampi (in its entirety) is a candidate for this, keep in mind that the next President of HC will probably not be a Jesuit and so the College could be in the market to build a Presidents House.
If not a new building, perhaps the top floor (or one wing) becomes the President's Residence and the lower floors/wings are for entertaining and guests of the College?

Based on the description of the location by Fr. B, I believe the new Jesuit residence will be 2 Avon St. The location is west of the hockey rink.
From additional discussions, It seems as if Ciampi will be turned into a student residence with single rooms. If you have never been in Ciampi, each of the rooms occupied by the Jesuit community are fairly small, with room for a twin size bed, a desk, book storage and a private bathroom. The rooms are relatively spartan in size and accommodation. There is a large common reception/living room, a chapel and a dining room that accommodates less than 50 or so. Certainly a cozier, warmer atmosphere than Loyola when it was the Jesuit residence, which was very institutional and cold.
I was hoping that it would be turned into an Alumni / Institutional Advancement Center with rooms for alumni visitors and important guest of the college. It is not designed for multiple occupants in each room, but more like a country inn. Think of The TV Show Newhart. When Hogan first opened, there were two guest rooms on the first floor. They were soon eliminated due to the need for office space.

The Prior Performing Arts Center might create demand also.

Phreek - Do you know anything about the trust that owns 131 & 133 Kendig - 2 open lots owned by a trust that the property was transferred to in the 2013 time frame. Recall you posting some speculation about it on the old board. Is that correct or am I mis-remembering.

Recall you posting some speculation about it on the old board. Is that correct or am I mis-remembering. I will have to look it up. The trust I referenced recently was for 11 City View, right to the west of the residence. IIRC, the trust is in the name of a single gentleman in his mid '80s. If he were to sell to HC while still alive, there could be significant tax consequences. If he were to die, the tax consequences for his estate are likely to be nil. If he were to convert the trust to a larger family trust, that introduces a five year period during which the Commonwealth could tap the value of the property to help defray medical / long-term care bills. A Massachusetts lawyer may correct me with respect to that.

re: 131 and 133 Kendig, owned by a husband and wife trust. Though the trust has an address in Auburn, the two trustees live in Mims FL, and are in their 80s. The land probably was acquired decades ago (about the same time (50-60 years ago) as 20 City View was built?) by the husband's father, as other relatives (descendants?) own other properties in Worcester.
This land probably has ledge close to the surface and to bring water and sewer lines in would cost a pretty penny, hence undevelopable land. This may be an instance where HC would buy the property from an estate.
The two lots, 131 and 133 Kendig, back into 20 City View, one of the two properties on City View that HC doesn't own. (20 City View is the last house on the right if one was driving up City View to the Hart.) The combined two lots on Kendig are slightly larger in square footage than 20 City View.

Looking at the maps, I think hockey rink expansion would be made possible by those Avon properties!
I agree with the aforementioned use of a hotel. It would be nice to stay on campus for President's Council weekend homecoming. I hope the new house can accomodate receptions such as the post Easter Vigil reception and others. Our Jesuits deserve the best for how loyal they are to us and the College.
