I like(d) Bill Gibbons, his personality, his bleeding purple.
He once was a much better than average coach.
Whatever happened, he lost his coaching chops years ago.
Even at Holy Cross where academics is primary, you still have to win on the court or field or ice. BG was NOT doing that for some time. It is beyond my capabilities to assess why that happened.
I know from personal discussions that Dick Regan once criticized BG for two things: 1. Playing UConn games and getting slaughtered and 2. always recruiting players “that looked like him” (i.e. white, Irish-Catholic girls).
I don’t pretend to know what happened when he got his second suspension but if anyone deserved to be terminated for lack of performance, it was Bill, regardless of what you felt about him personally. The fact that he was NOT terminated and allowed to have his contract expire was a just reward for his loyalty and years of service.
As for besmirching his reputation, from my perspective, that’s on him and self-inflicted and made worse by his lawsuit.
The guy who went out with class and also bled and continues to bleed purple is Tom Gilmore. Bill Gibbons, not so much.
