Fitton Field is next to the river on a flood plain. If flooding occurs, remediation on a turf field will be costly, possibly requiring complete replacement. Insurance cost will be expensive vs maintaining natural turf. Whose going to write the check for field turf? My current school/employer has two baseball fields. Our upper varsity field was turf and our lower field behind our gymnasium (and adjacent to the Charles River) was grass. The grass field frequently flooded and left the field in sorry state. After renovating the athletic facilities last year, they completed an extensive drainage and excavation process on the back field and added turf. We played several games in the rain last Spring and it drained very well. We rent out the field to local public schools with only natural surfaces in March. Good money maker. Should baseball be played only on grass? Perhaps. I will leave that argument for another day.

On another yet unrelated note, I never missed a BC-HC baseball game during my time at Holy Cross or in grad school in Boston. I remember sitting through a game in the low 30's with light snow, sometime around St. Patrick's Day. At least our student athletes weren't missing mid-week classes to play in Boca Raton.

TWO MLB yards have a plastic field. That's it. TB and TOR. But not many college fields have grass in New England. Bryant, Harvard, Holy Cross and UMass are the only ones that I can think of. Northeastern, BC, Dartmouth, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Hartford, Maine, URI, UConn’s new stadium, and probably a few more I am missing have turf.

Oh yea, Northboro is an option but D-1 coaches call it a launching pad and try to avoid it at all costs.

Official schedule release now on the home page - I see the BC game is now set at BC at their artificial surface field in Brighton - logical

Actually it's 5 MLB stadiums w/turf per that article, or will be in 2020 when Texas opens their retractable-roof park. And of course that's the common theme... all of these artificial turf fields are installed under (retractable) roofs. There are no outdoor-only MLB stadiums that have artificial turf.

Can Baseball get its own thread all ready. As someone previously stated How many National Championships do you need to win to get one?

Fwiw, Bucknell - like most northeastern teams - used to have a number of games canceled due to unplayable field conditions during/after heavy rains. Then in the fall of 2009, they went to field turf. In the ensuing ten years, they haven't lost even one game to field conditions. Yes, a few cancellations due to heavy rain - where the pitcher can't grip the ball. Or days when the temperature was 32 degrees and they just didn't feel like playing. But no cancellations because the field was unplayable.

Can Baseball get its own thread all ready. As someone previously stated How many National Championships do you need to win to get one? Just one more. This could be the last year HC gets to rent the baseball field to a summer league team. The Woo Sox move into their $90 million stadium in 2021 and any lower level team playing at Fitton will have a hard time competing, so the priority should be on on the Crusader Nine. There is no joy in Mudville, often the state of the diamond in March and April and school ends in May, so maybe a turf field would help stabilize the home schedule and help the team win national championship #2 to earn their own category on Crossports.

May depend on the ticket price. Bravehearts appeared to have a nice following, family, friends of local players, little league teams, neighbors...may still be attractive

MLB season starts on April 1 (give or take a few days) and ends at the end of September for the regular season. The college season starts in mid February and ends around Memorial Day for the regular season. Huge difference in the need for turf field.

They have group promotions for all ages including W.I.S.E. (Worcester Institute for Senior Education)

Hopefully with the Worcester Red Sox, Holy Cross can help build their baseball fanbase. They need to promote it more.

HC plays 8 PL away games(only 2 in a significantly warmer clime, Navy. 4 at Army, 2 at Bucknell) in March before they play a home PL game

I'm not sure how much of a following the Bravehearts need to be viable. The players are college kids so you're not paying them. I assume they acquired the free use of the field as an asset of the bankrupt Tornadoes. Expenses can't be that high. Even though the quality of the product is inferior to AAA baseball, I bet a causal fan can take a family of 4 with tickets, parking, and snacks for less than 1/2 the price at Polar. The following will shrink, but the team still might make expenses

Coach DiCenzo leaving for a MiLB job. Very poor timing just 3 weeks prior to the start of the season
