It is noted there that three HC alums are current members of Congress. Yet nowhere is it mentioned that an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States is an HC alum. Curious, wouldn't you say?

Clarence Thomas highlights the specialness of Holy Cross because he was part of a cohort of students who were personally recruited by a Jesuit Priest who would soon become President of the college and would remain a mentor and supporter for the rest of his life. That cohort experienced significant success and Holy Cross contributed to that and benefitted from it.
When Clarence Thomas was being "Borked" during his confirmation hearings Father Brooks stood by him. I figured Father B. had more moral authority than Senator Kennedy and was glad to see him stick up for his former student.

As to moral authority, I believe it is something that Justice Thomas clearly has. To compare him to the moral authority of a Bobby Kennedy is a disservice to our famous alum. Heck, our West Highland Terrier has more moral authority than was possessed (or shown) by Bobby Kennedy.

The HC Webmaster got back to me requesting the link to the page in question. I have sent him the link. Thos. is listed under "Success after Graduation," but so is Sen. Casey. So Casey is listed in both places on the site, whereas Thos. is listed in only one place. I'm not trying to make a bigger deal out of this than it is. But I am a TREMENDOUS admirer of Thos., while his enemies are legion. When the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Wash DC was built there was no recognition of Thos. Now THAT was a huge POLITICAL phenomenon. My comments and this thread are NOT political.

Clarence Thomas' politics aside, I had exactly one personal encounter with him when he was a student which I will not share in a public forum. I greatly admire fellow poster, Crucis, who knows him much better than I, but I will leave it as I am not a fan or supporter of our fellow alum on the high court and, to repeat, it has nothing to do with his political bent.

I was thinking of Ted Kennedy being reduced to a potted plant at the hearings, because how could he speak up about sexual harassment? In general though I enjoyed following Senator Ted Kennedy's long career because ideology aside I was raised to regard the Kennedys as near Saints. Perhaps an old phrase that dated back generations and I used to hear occasionally might explain it: "The best is none too good for the Irish, and the Irish are none too good for the best." |

Justice Thomas should be celebrated in the same light as Chris Matthews & Jon Favreau--even more so. We love our HC alumni. JT has given a personal tour of the SC and his personal chambers to every cohort of the Washington Semester Program for the past 20 years. For those who graduations are a distant memory, I will say this: for students today Justice Thomas is powerful symbol of the possibilities of a Holy Cross degree. Period. For those recent graduates who compete for jobs with students at the Ivy's, they know this: if they want to be a political commentator--they can (Chris Matthews), if they want to be a sports editor--they can (Bill Simmons), if they want to be the head of the NIH--they can (Fauci), Dean of a Medical School (Collins), Hedge Fund Manager (Mooney), in Fashion (Bearman), Actor (Dowd), CEO (Wildetrotter), Entrepreneur (JD Power), Top Attorney (Wells), etc etc etc And yes, an SJC!
