There is a Jacksonville St in Alabama hence the Fla in the subject. Just saw this on AGS...of interest to HC perhaps in that the Dolphins were supposed to visit Hangovah on 9/19/20...we play Yale that weekend but maybe some scheduling finagling could take place for HC-Dartmouth.

Not a huge surprise. Jax always came up on AGS as a program that could've had a much higher ceiling if the school was willing to commit the resources. Obviously this decision shows they clearly were not. There is a pretty big non-HBCU vacuum for FCS football in the state of Florida for someone to capitalize on. Will Stetson upgrade from Pioneer and go full scholly into the Big South? Will Florida Gulf Coast start a program? University of North Florida (located in Jax)?

President of Jacksonville, Tim Cost, is a former colleague and friend. Having annual dinner on Monday-former NYY pitcher in the minors-will find out why

A one shot wonder of a basketball program in 69-70 featuring an unheard of TWO seven footers out on the court at the same time- Artis Gilmore and Pembroke Burroughs. Also, Celtics draft choice (and not very good pro) Rex Morgan.
Unlike several other schools at the time that had success (Western KY, Villanova coming to mind); managed not to end up on probation and/or get their wins vacated.
IIRC they beat Adolph Rupp's last all-white Kentucky team (with Dan Issel) to get there.

Pembroke Burrows went on to become the world’s tallest state trooper.
Wasn’t it said that he was originally in the band and then the coach saw how tall he was, or am I thinking of someone else?

Durfee's Ernie Fleming was on those JU teams as well...he and Artis played together and transferred to JU from Gardner-Webb which was a JUCO at the time.

Didn’t former-Celtic (of pump up his Reeboks for the dunk contest fame) also play for Jacksonville? He did indeed....Dee Brown JU '90.....the Dolphins were a decent program through the 90s as part of the Sun Belt Conference....I really don't know the whole story, but they have dropped off it seems this Century playing in the Atlantic Sun conference in hoop.
