I exaggerated about them being stolen, but how did at least Grandison discover the interest of Illinois ? Random ? Once in the portal, probably in addition to others, he was contacted by Illinois....or he contacted them.

Maybe before he had entered the portal ?

Have a hard time believing a Big Ten program was tracking Grandison's career and encouraged him to transfer.

But he is there, isn’t he ?

Maybe before he had entered the portal ? Extremely unlikely.

Hoops based on your thinking some might say we stole Godbolt and McCaffrey

The hoops world has changed a great deal since Godbolt and McCaffrey, esp in the realm of transfers.

Yeah I get it now, it's okay for guys to transfer in but if they transfer out they've been stolen.

I should think that coaching staffs monitor the transfer portal and have one of the coaches check out every player who enters, dismiss 80% (wrong position, too small, data shows he can't shoot, couldn't start on a 3-25 team, etc) out of hand and then look further into the rest.

Yeah I get it now, it's okay for guys to transfer in but if they transfer out they've been stolen. Well, ya. I thought that was pretty obvious. Also doing harm to the kid who is obviously transferring to a school that is inferior to HC and thus messing up his entire future. Letting someone transfer in is doing them a service to their life long well being Just one person's totally objective opinion

I don’t think most guys enter the portal without having some sense of what their market might be. Whether an AAU coach quietly puts out some feelers to assistants at potential landing spots or it happens some other way, I can’t imagine kids just throw their name out there and hope for the best without doing a little market research first.

I think some and some don't. Many end up taking months to find a landing spot and take many visits. And there are a lot that never find a good landing spot.

As a general rule, I suspect the ones trying to move up put some feelers out first. The ones looking to move down so they can play more probably don’t do that as frequently but every situation is obviously a little different.
