Bellarmine University, whish has been D-2 for decades but is moving to D-1 next year, was allowed to begin a men's lacrosse program in D-1 a few years ago. I believe that was allowed because there is no D-2 lacrosse? There actually is D2 lacrosse but the pool of teams is much smaller than D3. The D3 national champ would stomp D2 most years. Bellmarmine has had DI LAX for at least 15 years, maybe there was no DII back then whenever they started playing? We actually played them back in 2006 or 2007.

Not just lacrosse, but at least around New England, there are way more D-III schools than D-II
In MA, I can think of Assumption, AIC, Stonehill, and Bentley for D-II
There more D-III's than that many within the Worcester city limits (WPI, Clark, Worcester St, MCP, and Becker)

Mercy College started in D2 and has had a good deal of success with both men's and women's lax. Their athletes wear shirts that say D2...by choice!

After we conclude this productive discussion on moving out of Division-1, I want to start a new thread on something a little more realistic: moving the school and all its buildings, brick by brick, to North Carolina. That would put us in a population growth area so we can dodge the coming decline in Northeast high school graduations, benefit from better weather, and build brand awareness via the bold move. Has a school ever moved states before? Not a bad idea
Can't do that now after the state of Massachusetts profile shape was put on the floor.

Maybe, and this might be more realistic and more productive, we can quietly switch the city of Boston with Worcester one night but keep our school precisely where it is. A win-win as we can harvest the Boston magic that blessed Harvard, BC, BU, Northeastern, etc. and keep the Massachusetts logo on our gym floor.

No offense, but our D1 identity is basically our biggest selling point to many prospective students in that they can continue to play the so-called Olympic sports at this level. It's basically what our "athletic identity" has become since joining/forming the Patriot League. In my opinion, we were one of the schools really "hurt or handcuffed" by the Dayton Rule (which essentially says all athletics have to play at the same divisional level).....in terms of hurting our hoop and football programs anyway. In joining the PL for all sports, we basically have put all our athletic teams (in theory anyway) on the same level/footing etc. I'm not necessarily saying this is a bad thing but the focus of our athletic program became less focused on the "major sports" if you will. Today, many of our students or prospective students want the experience/education that Holy Cross can provide as well as playing a sport at the D1 level. If we drop to D3, I'm really not sure what our brand or selling point would be to many. On your last point, just this week i learned of a girl from our local golf club who was admitted to HC as an ED candidate. She specifically wanted to play D1 golf (but was not talented enough for an SEC or PAC12 program) and happily chose HC over a couple of Pennsylvania D3 schools. I'm glad she was able to navigate the admissions process. She will make a great teammate and classmate.

The historical record of HC's womens golf team is representative of HC's minor sports teams over the years. It should be an embarrassment but apparently isn't. You can be sure every other PL athletic dept is aware of it. Robbing Peter to pay Paul is sort like cheating, isn't it?

I know the discussion about why HC is always at the bottom of the league in minor sports has come up scores of times -- usually in the midst of threads intended to discuss other topics. Some of us are bothered by the lack of commitment and others don't care whatsoever as long as our flagship programs perform.
For those wondering why it is so difficult for us to fund all these minor sports compared to the rest of our conference mates, consider this:
We are the ONLY school in the PL to sponsor ALL of the following:
Football Men's & Women's Ice Hockey Baseball Men's & Women's Lacrosse
Note that Army has all of the above eccept Women's Hockey and Women's Lacrosse. However, they have the advantage of having football as a legitimate revenue generator, not to mention federally funded facilities.
This is why IMO our budget thins out when it comes to swimming, golf, tennis, etc.
A couple of ladies sports got a boost when football schollies were added as these equivalencies have to go out to an equal number of women -- not sure what sports these are divided amongst...

Interestingly, nationwide, there are slightly less D2s than D3s. I learned today that Simon Fraser University, in Vancouver (or a suburb of) is an NCAA D2 member....and in the future there might be a member from Mexico www.insidehighered.com/news/2018/01/22/ncaa-allows-mexican-institutions-join-division-ii-one-aiming-be-first. I'm surprised Merrimack moved up but Bentley, which I think has done well at the D2 level in several sports (and has D1 hockey); doesn't seem inclined to make that move. Stonehill and Assumption, IMHO, are too small to make the jump; although if there a few more D2 defectors in New England, they may end up elsewhere (up or down). I think the instability of that division in New England would be a major deterrent for Holy Cross to ever consider that specific move.

Every D-II school I can think of is in the Northeast 10 conference. After the defection of Merrimack this conference still has 13 schools. The conference seems solid enough, although in this day and age, I'm not too sure about the stability of all of the member schools.
Disclaimer: Saying the NE10 conference is solid for its members should under no way be interpreted as I think HC should go there or anywhere else in D-II or D-III

Yup...and that is exactly what IMHO will happen. This entire discussion has been entertaining, but essentially pointless. Did any of you believe for a minute that HC was ever serious about m loving to D2 or D3?

DIVISION 1 it is......the rest is pointless banter. Holy Cross Football is on the rise and will continue to climb under Coach Chesney, Basketball will be corrected by Coach Nelson and his recruits, Holy Cross has very good athletes in the other sports as well ( men & women ) included. Hiring the right coaches is the largest challenge our Athletic Department faces. It does make a difference to the real student athlete of Division 1 vs. D 2 or 3 competition. Go Cross !!

Perhaps it was intended as Sarasota's effort to re-establish his position on the board as the resident contrarian (please do not get him going about religion or that Holy Cross is viewed by many - i.e.him - as a seminary). Some of you were not Crossporters in his first reign and therefore unfamiliar with his modus operandi. You have now been warned. Interact with him at your own risk. As for me, I am starting a petition to have HC70 reinstated from his lifetime ban. Who's with me!!

No objections...thought he left on his own when Milan got canned. What was his other nom-de-plume, he had two? He was banned and came back as "ncaam" on the "new" board. He has been banned again for about a year or so if I'm not mistaken. HC70 had the record for most posts on the old board. I did the math at one point. Assuming 8 hours of sleep per 24-hour day, he averaged something like 3 posts an hour for every waking hour over a two or three year period.
